Running 4 Actives

Just a query.

Ive currently got 4 Active W-Audio PSR15As for various tasks.

I normally just use 2 for decent sized rooms.


I was just wondering could you link 4 up together? or are you better with designated tops & active subs?

any ideas on sound? could you (as theyre active put a lot more bass to the bottom 2 cabs?

Yes, you can link the majority of active speakers together if they have the 'Thru' connector, with is usually an XLR Out, to feed into another.

But it will sound a hell lot better with a pair of sub woofers, rather than using just 4 X 15" tops.

But it does depend on the system still, some DJs believe that their tops are good without subs. I haven't heard any systems yet that sound 'as good as' if you were running subs.

more of a general query - not really heard it done on here.

As a passive man I may not be best to answer this, but: If you already have 4 tops ( we know a song about that, don't we? :D ) then by all means try it and see. Two options, one is to use say booth and main output for each pair. Second is if they have a "Thru" socket, then you can link them this way, and if the cabs have tone controls on them, then experiment with them.

One or two dedicated subs is better, but as I say try with what you've got first.

You will definately get a more powerful, rounded sound by adding subs but as Peter has suggested out play around with what you have before splasing out on subs.

You could always run 4 tops and 4 subs....now that would be a nice system!! :D :D

But it does depend on the system still, some DJs believe that their tops are good without subs. I haven't heard any systems yet that sound 'as good as' if you were running subs.

You've not heard mine then Max. ;) Any time you want and you're in the area. Crazy K did, and would have bought a pair like them,to use in place of subs and tops in venues with bad access, except he couldn't get them onto stands.:(

:) ha ha! no way! - i'd need a lie down for a week carrying them in!

i was counting yours as the extra 2 to make 4.

I spent all last year lugging subs about then replaced them with the PSR15As.

Then ive picked up bigger venues that need subs again + the PSR15As!


I bought yours as I sometimes set 2 PAs up (upstairs and downstairs) for weddings etc, and to loan out to a friend who does some work for me if he needs them.


I was looking at subs on the net and just wondered if you could run 4 together (as the bass is very good on the PSrs and you have EQ control). I know town centre pubs use 4 SRM450s with a great sound, with no bass cabs.


Tony - 4 tops and 4 subs! I like it, its about time my lazy roadie earned his 5 pound a night!! :D :D (ha ha he'd kill me if I told him to lug all those in!!) :)

just to let you know - i ran the 4 all linked up last night at a gig at the Hilton, Blackpool, and the sound was great. Strangely not double the volume of 2 PSRs, but a good round sound, nice bass to it too.

Absolutely totally and utterly predictable. To double the perceived volume of two, you'd need at least another eight. ;)

Andy I have a pair of PSR15As I am very happy with them and I have played quite a few large gigs with just a pair and have got away with it.

I added a parametric equaliser and picked out two very low bass frequencies and bumped them up by 5db and it "seemed" to make a difference, but Im thinking of adding the matching W-audio active bass bin (W-Audio WSR115P) Just the one!!!! I have a space premium as I use my Zafari as a van.

The only thing is they are huge (450 x 560 x 720mm) and they usually come with a "free" trolley to cart the things about. They weigh in at a whopping 49kg!! It's bad enough having the PSR-15A's weighing in at 30kg each!

Granted they claim to pump out 600w RMS, and I have no doubt they do. Overall I have been impressed with the quality of the W-audio range, and I have had quite a lot of compliments over my sound quality.

I was wondering if you looked at any other base bins that would do the business, but a heck of a lot smaller. Im not getting any younger and now I have a trapped nerve in my back by lifting the PSR15A's awkwardly.. My fault entirely as I was in a rush.

I am thinking about a different technique of getting the PSR15A's onto the speaker stands by lying them down and inserting the stands and then raising them vertical - which seems a safer way of doing it.

Any thoughts?

When I had mine I used to get it onto my shoulder , locate the hole and flip it on :eek: Worked for me.

but I must admit it's an absolute pleasure lifting the RCF's on to the stand and being able to carry two at a time. One less trip back & forward :D

funnily enough im looking at bass cabs again at the moment (ive lent the second set of PSR15As to my mate), ive looked at the WSR115 active and although it would probably be great, i dont fancy paying £700 for a pair, especially when like you say you dont need them for the majority of gigs.

i want to keep active, and ive seen the Db Technology subs are quite highly rated on here, but again i dont want to pay a fortune for 2.

I think wharfedale or Studiomaster do a pair at £550.

And W-audio have just released some smaller subs, but theyre passive only.

any other ideas will be welcome, even second hand or b-stock.


i think if the WSR's are almost 20kg heavier than the PSR15As EACH! then i'll give getting 2 of those a miss! :)

as for getting on the poles, i hoik it on the shoulder like Paul, but lay it down to remove the pole.

I used to have 2 sets of Actives and all I did was run one pair from the mixer output and the other from the booth output. It sounded fine and I didn't need any subs.

The Sub has a stereo L and R input and a passthrough L and Right so you can in effect run one sub on and feed through to your existing PSR15A's, or you could have pair of them and feed each PSR15A from each one, if that makes sense! lol

I do like the quality of sound and manufacture on the W-Audio. I was only thinking of adding a sub for the larger venues.

If you find anything suitable can you let me know as these are not cheap! :eek:

I'm not joking I have done my back in and had to lay low for three weeks with a trap nerve, with slight temporary paralysis of the left leg due to the trapped nerve.

So I am being a bit cautious as I have 5 weddings and two parties in August and no way am I going to be flipping those beauties onto the stands! lol

I found the big full range Class D 15s awkward to lift because they have more front than Brighton;) Nice bass end ;)

As Paul says (and Excalibur has demonstrated) the only way is to lift on to your shoulder and drop on to the stands--not ideal if your worried about your back:eek: Which I am:(

I really would worry about erecting speakers on poles from the floor---unless theres two of you---in which case you could lift them between you straight on.:D

Going up would be easy--coming back down sounds like a disaster waiting to happen--BUT if you find thats not the case great--I might try it although it means you might need a lot of room to do it--no use last night in a very very small venue with low ceilings:bang:

I looked at wind up stands--but I couldnt get any with a low enough starting point:bang:

My solution is--Class D small bass units--CD 15N weighing only 18kg with 350 watts rms output.

I only want one and im going to drive it separately with a Class D lightweight amp when they are available hopefully in a couple of months.

Peter, Justin and myself saw the prototype a few months ago--look good potentially because they are so small and light.

Lets hope they live up to the sales talk;)

Thanks for the heads up - Ive been looking at all sorts of options to be honest in terms of subs etc and still can't make my mind up!

The back is getting better - and August is my busy month so should be a tester to see if the back can handle it.

Thanks for the invite - same goes here always welcome to pop in. I sometimes get double bookings so looking for a good disco to pass on if it's reciprical.
