View Full Version : Back-up & Case Question

Hello All,

I have recently got a Denon HC-4500 (which is a great bit of kit by the way) as I plan to go digital. My other sources of playout are the KAM KCD1000 CD players which i'll continue to use as backup should the computer crash.

Due to now having a new piece of equipment, I need a new rackcase but I am unsure exactly what I need yet.

Do I flightcase the KAM draws, CD controller, HC-4500 & the mixer in one flightcase? Do I buy the BU4500 draws (from another forum member) to use with the HC-4500 eliminating the KAM KCD1000 (which will then become backup to backup)?

Also, as i'll be using a desktop (laptop is really slow & don't have the money for a good one) i'm also considering buying one of these (http://www.misco.co.uk/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=352050&sourceid=2012), so i'm guessing i'll need a 1U sliding tray too?

Any help regarding what to flightcase together would be much appriciated!

This compact keyboard is ideal for those travelling by car, train or aeroplane.

Yeah but your running a mobile disco so you really need the illuminated style keyboard for easy use in the dark.;)

I dont think this keyboard has that:confused:

Why do people using a digital playout use cd's as their backup ??? Why not use another digital source thus eliminating the need to carry cd's.

That's a very good point, and it's something I was guilty of when I went digital this time last year, as my back up consisted of my old CD console & all my CDs!


Why not use another digital source thus eliminating the need to carry cd's.

I do now.

Since purchasing the idj2 early this year, my old CD console & CDs now stay at home!

Ahh, fair point :o It's just useful because it has the mouse pad in it.

What if my computer dies?

I'd prefer to use CDs as backup as i know they work :o Also, i've got the player so i'm not going to spend anymore on backup playout when i've already got a backup source.

Then you use your digital back up, be it another computer, a laptop, a digital console, a couple of ipods or whatever!

Ollie, I have the HD2500 and bought myself a D4000 Cd player with the intention of using the drawers as a backup device. The worry is that if the HD2500/HC4500 should stop working (freezes), then it stops you using the CD drawers as well. Not that this has yet happened to me but its my paranoia!

I had all mine racked in a Gator Case 10U + 4U, however after 18 months (and about 17 1/2 months of complaining its too heavy!) I've finally got round to investing in some Swan cases and split all the items down. This means I now have three cases instead of one, but its alot easier. I have the denon mixer and 2500's in a swan 8u mixer case, in a 2u case I have the HDD 19" case and a keyboard on a slide out shelf, and then finally a flip case for the CD drawers. I got all my cases from Decks and cost about £300 all in, including next day delivery.

Thanks Paul, very helpful!

I'm seriously considering the BU4500 draws to link with the HC4500, as you don't have to re-boot like i've heard you have to do with the HD2500 (should the unit freeze i'd imagine a quick reboot would resolve the freeze). I could also flightcase my current CD players in a 4U rack to use as secondary backup.

That's pretty much what i'm looking for.

I was thinking about using this case (http://www.disco-world.co.uk/cases/kam-11u-4u-slant-case/prod_104.html) and put the draws & tray in the bottom and the mixer & HC4500 at the top of the slant?

Should be fine, depending which way round you prefer, you may be able to put the HC4500 at the bottom of the slant. I only went for the Gator case as I didn't want a blanking panel on the front face of the case.

If you want any other case ideas there are some good setups involving hd2500's and 4500's over on the official Denon forum (Sorry in advance if I'm not allowed to mention other forums).

Yeah, OK, I have a back-up CD player and CDs, but in my defence my CDs take up two small-ish wallets (totalling around 120 CDs), not boxes and boxes, and the player's in the same box as the mixer and pre-map.

And you never have the complete back up?

How do you mix between tracks if you have one CD player--:eek:

Hard Drive and a Cortex is peanuts--why do anything else?

It is best to have a seperate CD controller, meaning if the HC4500 Playout did fail - you'd still be able to control the CD Players

I would flight case everything if you're carrying it around in a Mobile situation, unless it restricts access or the casing gets in the way etc

Paul-S, Just a little thing.

When I had my 1u tray above my CD draws, they used to rub a bit on the back of the draws. Only got one very small mark but that's not the point. The point being that the tray was rubbing on the CD draws every time you slide the tray in or out.

Just thought I would give it a mention. :)

Hi Tom,

Thanks for this, I did manage to mount the tray with a small gap between it and the CD-drawers and it looks like I've got away with it.

I've now split everything down into smaller cases as my back complained too much, the keyboard tray is now above the HDD unit. I'll try and get some pictures added soon.

My First thoughts were nah ... but after looking at it closely the other day, it looks quite nice. (the price is a different scenario enitrely though)

Wherever you're using it, nobody sees it anyway, they don't care how the music gets to them, as long as it does.

Does the IDJ2 have a brain of it's own, or is it a basic interface?
