Tonight I have been out to do a Wedding gig and on my return. I come back to be informed that a dj who was covering a gig for me never turned up. Despite contacting him earlier on.
I havent been able to get a good mobile phone signal from where i was. But all got sorted.
Thanks to Peter who covered the gig in the end. I thought you had a gig on already on friday. But thanks again for covering it at such short notice. I definetely owe you a few drinks now.
But at the moment im not going to name and shame the company who let me down. who have covered a gig for me before. I'm going to ring him tommorow and see what he's got to say for himself.
Im going to ring the venue tommorow and appologise because thats all i can do. Because i was responsible for getting the cover sorted which i did everything i could to get it sorted.
So i wont ever use this company ever again after tonight. No Chance.
But i need some other DJ's that i can rely on to cover some gigs if i ever need any cover. So the question is, Is there anybody near Hull or anyone in yorkshire that can cover Hull and whats your going rates.

Phew! Thought maybe the Alzheimers had flared up, and I'd not remembered you telling me. ;) :o :D :D :D :D :D :D
Very happy punters, relieved staff, following the SS Continental Drift thinking she was in Q1 for the Hungarian Grand Prix by mistake!!
Boisterous crowd ( including some weird ones  ), birthday girl very happy and nice, her Dad very pleased with evening, shame the carpet looked like a cross between a glass recycling plant, and overflow from Kronenbourg tank no3! Don't get me started on this, I can feel a thread coming on. :bang: :bang: :bang: :bang:

Glad you got it sorted.
Nice one, Peter. It's good to see operators being reliable.
As an operator with a 100% reliability record, we offer a special guarantee which means if we don't turn up, the client can claim compensation from us. We've never had a claim made against us so we must be doing something right!
Mind you, when I suggested the scheme to the other partners, there was looks of horror on their faces. They obviously didn't have the same amount of faith in us as I did!

Why are you covering gigs with other DJs John? Are you an agency or whatever now? Would it not be easier just to pass details to other companies and save yourself the hassle?

I find this far easier. Unless an 'emergency' happens I gladly pass on contacts to other DJ's I know and then get the favour returned. (some return more than I give :) ).

Im not an agent Darren at all and its exactly how you said it is i passed the booking onto another company. Because at the venue im a recommended supplier when they need a dj and because i was already working i passed the booking onto another dj who i know.
But the venue called me when the dj didnt turn up because i recommended them to cover the gig as well as what i do Peter and Justin.
I dont like unreliable people and ive never let anyone down myself ever!
and i dont intend to start now.

I think the point Darren is gettting at is even though your not the one directly that has let them down they may paint you with the same brush and now creates an issue between you and a venue.

Once you have the information as to WHY they didn't turn up, well..depending on what the reason is...I would name and shame them so that other people in your area can steer clear of them.

I also think in future you need to make it clear to the DJ, client, and venue that you are in no way involved with the booking. I have a regular venue which I often pass onto other DJ's, but it is just that - the client is given the DJ's number and I am now out of the picture.

Gotta stick up for John here, at one of my venues in particular, I often do the same thing. Justin and John have both covered it for me with no problems. I get the booking, endeavour to fill it for the customer, and usually no bother. Saves venus contacting an unfamiliar DJ. Continuity of service and all that.

Yes, but also makes you liable when the guy doesn't turn up, which was my point.
Well done for covering the booking though Peter.

Very very lucky too!!!!!!!!!!!!
If you want to keep your credibility I would have thought the way to do it is to book in the Discos yourself after vetting them and get whoever you choose to do it to set up a written Contract with the Hotel or the client direct specifically for each function rather than just ---ring xyz?
Even if you pass the gig details over by email to someone else the Hotel know your looking after them.
Your not an agent, just introducing reliable Discos to cover you. :D
Then check out the day before everything is ok.;)
Even if you make nothing your in control and have the regular work for yourself when available.
How easy would it be for a Disco salesman to point out the drawbacks of the existing system and pinch the business?
It might well increase your business--but then I know nothing of Yorkshire---except where Peter and the worlds biggest collection of Class D Speakers reside ( outside of Mansfield of course) :D :D :D

Moral of the story: Only use folk on here to cover. ;) We daren't face the shame of fouling it up. :o

Luck played its part. ;)
As I understand, John did everything expected of him, including contacting the other DJ more than once prior to the gig to check that it was OK. In my dealings with him, he has never failed to be vigilant in this respect.

...and I'm not saying anything different. My posts are to do with the liability. If John books in another DJ, he is effectively an agent. The buck stops with him. If he recommends someone and hands over the booking then it is different.

Message received and understood. However. As one man bands, we often build up a very personal relationship with venues, " ( not that you don't of course ) and feel obliged to do our utmost to provide a suitable replacement ourselves, rather than " Here's a list of numbers, help yourselves". It's the personal touch. Not a dig at you or other multi-ops, just an explanation.
While I accept your use of the word agent, there is no commission involved, so no financial gain. Just a warm feeling from helping someone. ( And of course maintaining your status as first on the venue's list. Unless some smooth tongued multi-op boss has put in a persuasive sales pitch. :D :D :D :D )

By agent are you meaning John took a deposit?
I think if you/anyone took a deposit he/they should be liable for what happens....no offence just the way I see it.
I'm a mobile DJ and am willing to cover all area's and I think Pete knows my charges. ;)

I understand what you mean Peter as that is the way that I built my business, but you have to make up your mind how you are then running your business. You can't officially have it both ways.

You are either an agent/employment business or not. Just because you don't make any money from it makes no difference. If you keep it 'in house' then you are responsible for that DJ turning up.

Just out a matter of interest, if you are an ents agent, is there quite a lot of important things that need to be implemented and guidelines to follow? Sorry if this is off topic :o

Ah, gotcha. ;)
On a point of order, may I point out that a business which doesn't actually charge for its services has a fundamental flaw in its business plan. :D

Well after spending the last part of 2 hours last saturday morning trying to get a dj to cover for a fellow dj collegue who no fault of his own was stuck abroad due to delayed\cancelled flights,i found out a few things.........
Most djs who are reputable were honest and said they were already booked out, after asking them can they recommend another dj most said no,they would not recommend someone else.the reason........
they did not want any complaints\negative feedback from someone else that they coluld not vouch for because they just worked on there own.
if asked I only give out details of another 2 djs on this form because i know them and most importantly trust them.If both these djs are unavailable then i just leave it at that and tell an enquiry sorry.

Surely something like that would suffice?

I guess so. I would still be worried though if it all went wrong. The first thing that the would probably say would be " where did you get his number from?"

It's the same thing Alan. If you are doing that, then you are acting as an agent.
Not if the written Contract is between the client and an other Disco.
You are providing a service acting as a Professional introducer of alternative entertainment.
If the Contract is between Twin Spin and the client and he supplies and pays say Peter then thats acting as an agency.
Thats my view.
