The day has come for the nice person to come and PAT test my equipment , its a home visit , so I thought ,lets get everything out ready.
I could not believe how much there is , when it`s all spread out :eek: ,I must have enough IEC leads to stretch from here to Chichester :D

Still ,it needs to be done.

Last year 90 this year I went to active speakers so going to notch it up a bit more. Im guessing about 100 now. My test is up in september so ill start saving now lol.

Mine was £93 for 36 items.

Which was approx £64.50 for first 20 items, then £1.70 per item after that.

I thought that was good , considering the guy travelled 20 miles to see me.

The advantage of running pub quiz nights is that you build up lots of different contacts covering a very wide range of occupations.

For that reason, my PAT testing is done buy a local electrician who up the road & doesn't charge me.

I get mine done for free from my dad's work but I always give the PAT tester money to say thanks. :)

No favour at all.

When he first did it about 5 years ago, he said there would be no charge. I offered him some money for a drink, but he didn't take it, and he hasn't charged me since.

It's quite straightforward, though, as I don't have much stuff & he only lives a mile up the road.


Still thats good if you know the right people and get your pat testing done free of charge.

The advantage of running 4 weekly quiz nights is that I see 120-200 regulars each week, and they cover a wide range of occupations.

I see it as one of the perks!

Last year I did just shy of 150 items! So this year, I've qualified myself to self-test (and anyone else's for a small fee of course.. :D). Dread to think what the total will be when I'm finished going through everything!

He added, you can pick up a 2nd hand PAT testing machine for around 400 pound. I know I'd sooner buy my own PAT tester and do it myself because if you think how much it's going to cost you in the long run, it will save you quite a substantial amount of money :D ;)

I find that hard to believe. You need to check cabling to be of sound quality and similiar with the plug. You will need to have past some sort of course surely?

I used to PAT test computer equipment in one of my previous IT related jobs. I spent an afternoon with the site's electrical engineer who talked me through the tests I needed to perform and they bought a one button PAT test machine which logged the results to a PC which printed off the test records.

It's not rocket science, but you have to bear in mind that when you PAT test something you are taking responsibility for any accident which might occur as a result of it's use - you'll find that anyone who performs PAT tests will have some kind of insurance to cover themselves, as by paying someone to PAT test your equipment you're shifting the responsibility of ensuring that it's safe to that person, and I'm sure you'd be very quick to call them up if either a customer or a member of your crew was electrocuted by an item that had only been PAT tested the week before (just as you'd talk to the garage pretty quickly if the wheel fell off your car as drove out of the MOT station!)

You don't have to have the C&G - you just need to be 'competent', so that could mean you know how to use the machine, or have done a PAT testing course or are an electrician etc.

And yes, Steve has the C&G.

Self PAT testing worries me. As a qualified electrician and qualified portable appliance tester, I've seen and heard stories of so called "competent" people passing things that shouldn't have been passed, and also failing things that shouldn't have failed, because they have misinterpreted the results or fail to know what the limits are in respect of the tests.

I suppose what worries me more is the people that run these courses, as I don't think they teach you enough about what the results mean, what to look for and why you need to look for certain things.

Im kidding of course.

Deadly serious darren, The majority of the venues ( and im including some 5 star venues and a big stadium ) will ask to see your certificates and may even photocopy them but never check them properly and I have never ever had a venue check equipment against that listed on the certificate !

I get asked for PLI certs and risk assesments, method statements all the time. I never get asked for the PAT test certificates?

Got all my paper work this morning.
A receipt for the payment , and 7 pages of reports on the equipment , each page has the items listed, the PAT test machine number , the date it was last calibrated etc.
But there is no overall certificate , so I will photocopy the lot and present it to venues.

I was looking at doing the PAT course at my local college last year. The cost of the testing equipment put me off though.

I was under the impression that you needed to have a PAT Testers Certificate (or something like that). It is matter of health and safety (possible life and death) after all. I wouldn't use anyone who hasn't got this.

Our local electrical supplies store sells the stickers but they insist that you show them your PAT Tester's Cert before they'll sell to you. They won't let any old Tom, Dick or Harry buy them. I think that's very responsible of them, though.

I pay around £2.00 per item (if I take my gear to my bloke's workshop) or around £3 per item if he comes out to me. He's a fully qualified sparky who expanded in to PAT and has contracts with several big companies. They all trust him and so do I!

I was thinking of this topic today...

I'm now C&G 2377 qualified (£184) and bought a PAT testing machine (£450 with lots of stickers) last week, so have started the fun of testing all my gear!

So far I'm up to 125 items, and all I've done is cables! And not even all of them, still have all my uplighting looms, IEC 2 way splitters, and all the 16A stuff to do as well, before making a start on actual equipment!

At this rate, I reckon I'll save the cost of the course and machine in the first year!
