DJs not Serving 16,18, 21

I am quite surprised to be honest, at the amount of DJs who refuse to cater for 16, 18, and 21st's ...

Why is this, is there a huge safety risk involved?

It's probably more likely to be the venues who are reluctant, in my experience - for obvious reasons.

I quote for a good few birthdays but you tend to find the budget is alot lower than it is for weddings.

I charge the same for a 16th, 18th, 21st or a Wedding. The only difference would be if the Wedding required an early set-up.

I've gone down the route of doing reletively cheap 18ths but it brought a different class of punter and loads of trouble. Most of the teen events/proms I now do are arranged through parents or teachers who stay around to police the night....this is normally a condition of the venue being available to them anyway.

I must be an exception to the rule.

I do loads of 18th's and 21st's as that is my age group being 18 myself.

I also charge the same as for any other function, apart from a wedding.

I'm 39 and don't have a problem doing 18th as long as they behave themselves. In my usual there are a few big fellas who can handle themselves so any trouble is normally sorted before it starts.

Music wise it makes a nice change to play some up to date stuff for most of a night. A challenge I like to call it.

Never really had a problem with any of the mentioned age groups. My prices would always be the same though.

I do plenty of these parties as well. Not any more trouble at these than others to be honest. Most of the time as long as you play what they like they will enjoy tthe night the same as other crowds.

There are DJs here and in the real world that don't do 18ths and 21sts probably due to the fact that they don't know the music so much anymore.

One of my guys is in his ealry 50s and is just not interested in teenage and younger parties due to that very reason.

I find its more venues that refuse to take on these gigs than djs. I specialise in 16,18 & 21st's and its normaly the same one or two venues they are held in.

Agreed - I've seen venues insisting on door staff for 18th's and 21st's, but a lot have just outright banned them.

I've no issue doing them though. I've got no problem with the music required, but I do find a lot of 18th's turn out to be "Family" 18th's anyway where the music is really just the usual party cheese.

Totally agree. 100% of my 18th and most of my 21st birthday gigs have the parents involved but I only get the parents to sign my t&c's so they have to be there.

As for cheesy music, this is getting more and more popular. Most 18th and 21st birthdays I do, all they want is the most current music out, or what I can lay my hands on legally, but there has been a big rise in more family members going as well as friends of the birthday boy/girl and asking for cheesy dance routine songs and it don't bomb at all. lol.

Still, everyone is having a great time so that's all that matters. :)

Indeed...and that's the main reason why I don't do them.

I don't think it's right to take on a gig when I know there are plenty of other DJs who could do a better job, as well as enjoying it more.

The second reason I don't do them is because there's more likely to be trouble at an 18th or 21st birthday party than a wedding in a nice hotel.

Apart from a few exceptions when they are family events for people I know, the only birthday parties I do are 30ths upwards.

You're probably right there, people develop personal tastes in music, and old stuff is not particularly one of mine. I'm more into modern charts, club, and tracks from 1990 and upwards.

Sorry, I disagree. There are a lot of DJs I know who aren't interested for the reasons I said, so how can you say that Max is making it up?

You are basing your 'facts' on what 4 or 5 DJs have said in this thread which isn't the DJ population at large is it?

I know Max says plenty of silly things, but let's not all jump on his back every time he says something. What he says this time is true. There are lots of DJs who won't/don't play teenage parties.

I disagree with that one. In the last 2 years, I've only ever seen trouble at weddings. The younger parties have gone down really well with no trouble at all.

Then again, I always get a guarantor to sign the booking (usually a parent but someone over 25). This seems to do the trick.

I disagree with that one. In the last 2 years, I've only ever seen trouble at weddings. The younger parties have gone down really well with no trouble at all.

In that case we've clearly had very different experiences, because I can honestly say that I only remember trouble at ONE wedding in 25 years, and that was way back in my early days.

Certainly no trouble at a wedding for the last 15-20 years...and I do them virtually every weekend from April to October, as well as some off-season ones too.
