View Full Version : When do you use your strobe?

I realised recently that I very rarely use my strobe. To me it doesn't seem appropriate for most mainstream "party" songs, except the occasional Ibiza anthem. When do you guys use yours?
mostly during dance music and then not for extended periods. Sometimes during the guitar bit in Sweet Child O Mine. I use LED Bars not a dedicated strobe, so they are not as bright.

I don't have a strobe, but I make my scanners strobe for certain parts in dance songs.

only used a firecracker unit (which is awesome for price btw) once for a dnb gig but it did really help create an atmosphere.

1991 I think was the last time...
They have their uses at younger events (dance rave etc). Try using your strobe with coloured gels, I recently had a event illuminated with UV panels and strobed intermitently with a blue gel covered Atomic strobe, not all night though, I hasten to add.

much like everyone else, i use mine at most of my younger gigs, just used where needed, sandstorm, insomnia etc etc.
PE7E - Have you seen the colour scrollers for the atomics? I think they are pricey but very very effective! Full dmx too!

Yes, that's what gave me the idea, like you said, they cost a fortune and I can't justify the cost. If I saw a cheap one, I would buy it in an instance, colour adds another dimension to a strobe. The trouble with a powerfull strobe like the Atomic, is not all venues have a suitably robust electricity supply to power them

We used one at the teenage birthday party we did recently. It was only used in short bursts with the likes of Pendulum and Prodigy.Trouble was that some of kids wanted it on for longer and with every record, to them the music was irrelevant, all they wanted was the strobe itself.

Use ours for dance stuff usually during the breakdowns

Probably about the same for me, too.
One of those items that are more trouble than they're worth, so I got rid of mine many years ago.

Again I rarely use one, no call for them at weddings.
James uses on for the younger rave type gigs.

Yeah I get this. As soon as I get there, they go, "have you bought your fast flashing light mate?" .. .. i go "i'll see if I can find it later"

Used mine for the first time in about 3 years a few weeks ago doing a 21st when it was requested.
Doubt I'll use it for another 3 years now!

My 800wat strobe goes out with me EVERY weekend. I use it for songs like Summer of 69, The Best...etc.
Works great when I do teen parties too...

Not ideal for weddings, though........in fact about as welcome as a one-legged man in a butt kicking competition.

Whats a strobe..........
:D - Seriously though...i flogged mine years ago. I was going to replace with a number of littler ones as a lighting jock once told me that a wev smaller ones working in tandem was better and more usefull than one large one (something to do with offsetting and multimle light sources...sounded technical) anyway thats why most clubs have a number of them dotted around their lighting rig, instead of one big one :)

I have a mini strobe which came free with some other gear, but obviously it's not bright enough for anything larger than a house front room.
I would use strobes during one or two songs of the night, stuff like Dave Pearce Dance Anthems ... "Everybody's Free - Feel Love" etc on the fast parts of the song - the main chorus.
But playing Van Morrison - Brown eyed Girl, you wouldn't put it on then, would you :)
