Thru Outputs

Active Speakers and Amplifiers (decent ones) tend to have Thru Outputs to link up to another amp.

But do these work when the amp is off, or does it need to be switched on?

These work irrespective of whether the Amplifier is on or off normally.

I can 100% say for sure that that crown XTI amps ones work whether the unit is on or off as i have a few but don't always run the amps at the same time.

Im my experience every bit of kit i've had with a through on has still worked without the power being on BUT i couldn't say for certain that they are all like that as haven't tried every single through output on every single product :D

As Bruce and James said.

Theres a few times when ive too a sub (with the RCF system), wired everything in and then found that the sound limiter is dodgy as hell (regardless as to whats been said by management). Just turn the sub off and the full signal goest straight to the tops (full range tops i might add ;) )
