18th Birthday Disco Tonight!

I've got my first 18th Birthday Gig tonight, any ideas what I should play, general tips etc.....

Or other peoples' 18th Disco Experiences ??

Regarding your question, go charty initailly, offer to take requests & gague what goes down well out of what you play.

Not being rude but if that's your rig on your website you might have a bit of a problem sound wise but it depends on how many people will be attending.

As Darren has said, ask the client what they woud like but this should of been asked before the gig to give you a head start with searching for music or buying any.

Usually with 18th's they want it loud so I hope you got a system that can cope. :)

Not being rude but if that's your rig on your website you might have a bit of a problem sound wise but it depends on how many people will be attending.

From experience it takes more than a trip to Maplin's to make a rig good enough to be a DJ. Even though they're now stocking all the Kam kit, it's all the low end of the range stuff, and they still don't have any really good speakers.

That sounds really harsh on the guy does that. Why dont people give Max a chance on here? Some of the comments I've read targetted at Max is downright rude and very patronising, weres peoples manners on here? This is what really :Censored: me off with this forum, some people are very arogant and downright rude thats why I hang out on a MUCH friendlier forum than this 1. I sometimes enjoy this forum because there is some good advise from nice people. Makes me wonder that the general public can read this forum and if they see such members slagging others off, it looks unprofessional from the publics point of view. Some of you need to grow up.

I know Max is a member of the sin bin BUT at least give the guy a chance here. I've never heard anyone praising him or trying to get along with him. If people co-operated fully with Max and be more civilised, Max will feel more welcome and all in all, Max will feel a lot better and feel more welcomed. I'm NOT doubting Max at all here, I don't hold anything against him, give him a chance, be nice with each other and Max will be happier and this will reflect in the chaps posts, thank you, rant over.

With all due respect, Neil, until yesterday I'd have agreed with you. I took Max's side on a topic (see thread on fire exits) and he turned on me. I've come to the conclusion that others are right and it's not worth trying with him (although that's something I never thought I'd say about anyone).

Anyway, I'd play chart stuff from the last year and gradually mix in other genres to guage reaction.

And if people ask for songs again that's ok. It means I'm playing the songs they like so I've read the crowd right!

Max has been given chance after chance and is lucky to still be here as he doesn't listen and learn. He is rather thick skinned shall we say.

This 'problem' with Max is nothing to do with you, so why comment for? You are saying that the other forum is friendlier, but you are here commenting on an issue which is nothing to do with you and arguing with other members.

I think that Max should meet with the forum at BPM and buy everybody several rounds. Then roadie for each member for at least a couple of gigs! That will give him experience or an empty wallet or broken back!

I totally agree with Max there. The latest hits will be best played mid to end sessions. I've noticed that the cheesiest nightclub I go to often in Oxfordshire leave the clubby, latest hits to the end and they often start with 90's stuff and build up from there.

I do it this way, too. Play the new stuff early on and play the party classics towards the end.

The reason nightclubs play the new stuff near the end is to try to keep the punters (trendy types) in. The longer people are in the venue the more they spend and the more the venue makes.

With mobile discos working private functions, the venue will have made their money on venue hire and drinks sales aren't their main concern. So if guests leave early it's not too big a problem.

I tend to play all the chart stuff at the begginning and move on to older stuff/party dance songs/80s etc unless the client wishes a whole night of modern shizz.



Seems to get a busy floor quickly and grows throughout the night, works for me.

The 18th's I do usually start with fairly modern music and gradually getting more up-to-date with each song.

I then go in to modern R&B, then Top 40, then CHEESE!!! :D. Then I go in to Dance, if they are enjoying that, I take it up a notch a play La Roux - In For The Kill (Skream's Remix), then in to some Drum & Bass (usually Pendulum's Slam, Blood Sugar and Propane Nightmare).

After that, I play something like MC Hammer - Can't touch this followed by House of Pain - Jump around, then Backstreet Boys - Everybody, then Five - Keep on Movin'.

I follow on with more 90's/2000's classics depending on time and then it's time for Mr Brightside, Livin' On A Prayer, Summer of '69, Sex On Fire and then finishing with whatever the birthday person has chosen as the last song, for which I get everyone in a big circle on the dancefloor with the birthday person in the middle.

I agree entirely with Rob, surely what defines a DJ is knowing what to play and when, and having the options available to do so.
This is something which usually is drawn from a combination of experience and instinct.
If it's your first gig, I can see a slightly 'sticky wicket' forming and you could become reliant on pure luck to pull it off.

IN GENERAL at family-type private gigs which I predominantly work, I tend to go with the universally-appealing stuff early doors to get a mix of ages (usually the women) out of their chairs, so depending on the MEDIAN age group that'll be either your Disco with a capital D classics or perhaps nowadays some 80s pop. Next up I tend to 'deal with' the oldies, so, again depending on median age, older 70s rock, soul, bit of motown, 60's singalong classics and maybe a few jive/twist tunes if I feel they're up for it. This segues nicely into your party tunes usually kicking off with Tiger Feet or Locomotion/Wig Wam Bam depending on ages, with a younger crowd possibly Greased Lightning and from there I tend to work my way forward in time through the 80s/90s and 00s as this tends to fit in with the times that your older folks toddle off to bed and those with babies & toddlers tend to drift away. I usually save about 30 minutes worth of stonking requests or guaranteed floorfillers for the end of the night and mix it all up a bit.

I tend to just play music depending on the reaction I get from the current track playing and as Rob said, "Go with the flow" :D

Ironically the cheesiest night club I go to in Bristol does the opposite, starting with some of the livelier parts of the last decade or so of chart music and working through a mix of 70's disco, 80's and 90's cheese (Snap, 2Unlimited, etc) and then finishing with all the classics like Living on a prayer, One and only, Sweet child of Mine, Summer of '69, etc - all the stuff you have to be fairly well plastered to really enjoy ;) ).

From experience this works well in this particular club, and from my own experience works equally well on the mobile scene. But it does depend on the age of your audience and what they're up for.

Yup, thanks for the advice Max, once again you've told me what probably won't work. If I can give you a major bit of advice, get friendly with a local mobile DJ, roadie with for them for a month or two, then tell us what does and doesn't work in a room full of real people.

Sorry, it might sound harsh but giving bad advice based on limited or no experience to people who might not know better is a really good way to dilute the quality of the information held in this forum (and really mess up someone's party along the way).
