Hi Mark,

First impressions are that its a well spec'd and quick phone, comprising of a very good 3.1" AMOLED screen, 800mhz processor, 5MP camera and both WiFi and GPS. It beat's the old tocco by far.

I'm not sure what you would be comparing it against so its quite difficult to draw any comparisons. Personally for a touchscreen device I have an iPhone so I find that the scroll works the opposite way than I'm used to, but it is now responsive. The applications work quickly, and the few that I saw looked and felt quite good.
Samsung have caught up with some of apples features including fast zooming on screen, but surpassed them in others. You can set shortcuts dependant on patterns you draw onscreen, for example drawing a letter M opens up the music player app. You can also set up your own widgets and apparently download plenty more from the web. There is also a nifty feature (I can see its uses) where you can push and hold the volume key and it makes a fake call to your phone so you can make your excuses.

It does however feel very plasticky (is that even a word?), and very light. I'm not sure with my heavy-handidness it would stand up to it, however that is yet to be proven and so shouldn't cast that as true judgement.

Mark I couldn't make a recommendation to you as I don't know what your requirements for a handset are, nor do I know your criteria for what makes a good handset. However this is a very good step up from the old tocco, the movies on the screen look great and it now responds like the old touchscreen devices should have. As for things like reliability and software faults, its a little too early to tell. I've spoken to some of my contacts in the call centre who map the call trends and there has been nothing flagged as yet. I would suggest that you visit a retail store and try one out and see if it suits what you're after.
