Time off

One thing I am really conscious about, especially having a family, is the amount of time off I take. Yes I have a lot of time off during the week, but that is when my son is at school.

I have 2 weeks off soon, when we are going to Florida and we always go away Monday to Friday in the October school holidays - although I have a regular Halloween party for a school on the Friday night. We have been talking about this, and although not a problem, I have put aside 5 weeks for next year which I will not take any bookings - under any circumstances.

Normally I arrange 'time off' for when bookings are low but this time have dedicated time when I will not take bookings.

What do you do - fit holidays around work, don't take time off or dedicate a few weeks in your diary to holidays ?? The decision is made harder with kids as their holidays in the summer also clashes with peak wedding season.

Mrs VV is a teacher and so our windows of opportunity for holidays are fairly limited.

Luckily, for some odd reason, the wedding season here tends to peak in June and again in September. July and August are both fairly quiet, maybe 2/3 weddings each month, so we tend to take the last 3 weeks of August as main break.

Just packing now for our Scandinavian roadtrip :)

We also try to get a week in Scotland each year, usually in March/April.

For the other 337 days of the year we have to put up with the Isle of Wight :D

As there are 3 of us involved with Lightning, I've no problem getting time off. I usually take 2 weeks in September to go on a family holiday. Only away for 1 week this September as we did part 1 at the end of June when the weather was red hot!

Although not been there for 3 years, still my favourite holiday destination and a place I intend to retire. I have even picked the pub I would love to purchase and retire with.

Im Currently away at the moment. havent gone too far though. Because its been too late to book anything. But at the moment im on a campsite till next sat in a 7 man frame tent.

and got sunburn at the moment on my arms and face.

Since going full time, it wouldn't be easy, partly because it would be a nightmare to get all my nights covered, and partly because I'd lose a small fortune by not working for a couple of weeks.

My last holiday was in the year 2000, but I'm planning a couple of nights in Bournemouth in the next few months (on a weekend where I have no discos). Therefore, I'll be able to drive down on a Friday, stay a couple of nights & drive back for my quiz on the Sunday...and I won't lose any work income. I'll also be able to get the accomodation on my air miles, so the only real cost will be the diesel.

It will certainly make a nice change.

That's my exact problem. Income v Time Off.

Last year and this year the wife and I didn't go away for 2 reasons (a) we couldn't really afford it due to house renovations and decorating and (b) I had a few disco's around the time we would normally have gone away.

I am considering going abroad next year though as we both feel we need a nice break somewhere where the weather can be guaranteed to be hot hot hot! :D

We will dedicate 2 weeks to this so I am currently not taking any bookings for the last two weeks in August in 2010. Luckily though I have put my prices up recently and am converting a lot of quotes to bookings for next year already. Hopefully they will pay partly towards the holiday.

I think I will be doing this for the forthcoming years unless my situation changes.

Although I have a daughter, she lives with my ex-wife but I do take her out every fortnight. I would like to take her on holiday but my ex makes it quite hard for me and is constantly messing me around with dates so I daren't book anything. Hopefully when she is a bit older (she is 12 now) she will have more of a say in where and when she goes anywhere then I will take her on holiday. Till then it's just me and the missus.

No holiday this year due to a house move and the recession.

same here --- moved house in may,took the plunge to go into disco,karaoke full time ---- but booked for a week in marmaris next june. finances should be sorted by then :eek: :eek:

We haven't gone away for a holiday this year, but i've in the middle of a week off and have had some days out with the missus and the kids, got some painting / my little lads bedroom done (he's very excited about his new bunk bed).

I usually have a weeks holiday in the 6 weeks with the kids, a week off from the office between xmas eve and 2nd jan (although, i still take any gigs that come in between 27th and 31st Dec, bizarrely i've got 3 this year).

The rest of the year, i'll have a day off from the office in the week when i need to.

I'd like to take a couple of weeks off during the summer hols, but again, it's that income v holiday dilemma....
