What a terrible place this 'top class' hotel is to do a disco. I have been at this place around 10 or so times overall. It's one of them horrible rooms that is very long and the stage instead of being at one end of the room is in the centre on one of the walls, basically you are facing forward towards the dance floor and the people sit to your left and right, it's hard to get the sound out.
Everytime you are in there the bouncers will come up and ask you to turn it down, this happens routinely at around 10.30pm, it may be you or the band that is laying at the time. The problem is that the level they want you to play at is ridiculously low, even if it was a room half the size of what you are in, it would still be very low. Anyway, same thing happens on Saturday night, bouncer comes over to the band and says something, the band more or less said - it's not loud etc. and refused to turn it down, Next minute the manager appears with a sound monitor but they were not exceeding the allowed decibels so no more was said. The band finished and I started up again, the band hadn't really pleased the crowd but when I started up everybody flocked to the dancefloor in their droves. I was away from the dance floor as the band had taken up all the stage, I took a toilet break around half an hour later and upon re-entering the room I thought to myself how quiet it sounded. When I got up to my console there was a bouncer there wanting it turned down, saying that they had people complaining on the 2nd floor. I turned it down to 'his' required level and half the dancefloor disappeared. Anyway, finished at 1am and set about having a word with the miserable sod's. The conversation was basically me saying how am I supposed to make a part out of background music, to which they replied, they have to look after the people who pay to stay there, I said yes bought these people have bought the wedding here and paid thousands, the bride and groom came over whilst this was going on saying that the music going down in volume had ruined their party as people wanted to dance. The bouncers said that the DJ who is usually there never has a problem, I pointed out that he uses prosound speakers from Maplin that wouldn't fill a house up with volume and that my system was a proper rig with bass bins and it was nowhere near 'loud', they said that I shouldn't waste money on expensive kit then, the bride said she shouldn't have wasted money on a hotel that won't let you have a party when you have booked it. I also pointed out that the air conditioning vents were everwhere in the ceiling and that the rooms are all above the function suite, and then pointed out that the gym was on its own in the complex away from the rooms, CRAZY design.
If you get a booking there then please be aware that you won't be allowed to do your job properly as you are restricted to not being a DJ . I challenged the bouncers to let future couples know all of this when they book their weddings. I will never work there again. I did have the last laugh though, I said they won't even let you use smoke here, the bouncer said, absolutely no chance, i said well mine had been on for the last 5 hours and I have had no problems, they didn't believe me so I showed them and stuck it right on them when they realized I did have my haze machine working. Im going out tomorrow to buy some really rubbish speakers because I no longer see the point of 'trying' your best with these kind of people. I understand from their point of view about the customers but surely I have to look after mine first, if I am not allowed to do that then I won't return to that venue again.
