Bass Cabs & Full Range Cabs Without Crossover

evening all,

Im trying out a new system;

2 full range speakers
2 amps
2 bass bins


Thing is, the bass bins are designated bass bins and have an internal crossover than only lets bass frequencies through.

question is:

i have 2 jack outputs (L & R) from my amp. how do i connect these up using 2 amps (1 for top, 1 for bass) ie if it was an external crossover the outputs would go from the mixer to the crossover then split 2 ways.


there is a HI OUT connection from the bins, but the bins are 4Ohm (350w) and the tops are 8Ohm (350w)

ideally i want almost like a thru-box just to split the signal.




anyone any ideas? - the alternative is to buy a crossover, but its a bit needless.

i have a crossover for sale ..

that is the setup i used to use

and the crossover is all ready set

Use an Active Crossover (http://www.boutiquemusicinc.com/e-store/images/BBE/BBEMAX3.gif) (1U Rack Mount)

This will offer the best sound quality.

I almost forgot to mention, you will have control over each frequency :D

What happened to your actives?

To use the internal crossover you would only use one amp, but its better to use 2 and get a external crossover.....take the one out of your bins also...like other people suggested.

other wise you could get a splitter lead from mixer to the 2 amps but i wouldn't recommend this.

i think the simple solution here is to split output signal from the mixer to the amps.

This will require splitter cables on your main output to give you 4 single outputs. (2 for left & 2 for right).

Crossover will be pointless to buy as you bass cabs have internal crossover built in. External crossover are good as it allows you to deliver as little or as much low frequencies to your requirement. Internal crossover are usually set to a particular range.

The Ohm problem is a difficult one to resolve unless your amps can deliver 4 Ohms (if bridged mode is available) for the bass bins; and 8 for the top.

What's wrong with a booth /zone out for one amp, and a main for the other? Gives you control of relative inputs for each frequency band, thus allowing you to balance the subs and tops from the mixer, not the amps, always a better way.

The problem with using the Zone output would be that it's not balanced. If this is a balanced system of course. If its not balanced then it wouldn't overly hurt, but the input levels to the amps would be at different levels.

Personally, I'd undo the bass cabs and remove the crossover, then use an active crossover between the mixer and amps.

I understand that the manufacturer put a crossover in it to protect the cones from frequencies it can't handle but passive crossovers really don't sound that good.

I was intending to get an active sub, but saw a deal i couldnt refuse. so i went back to a passive set up, and at the moment i'm lending the actives to my mate, although in time i may have to sell them.

used the set up last night using an external crossover - sounded awesome, but flippin' eck everything is heavy!! CJ - the passive tops are much heavier than the PSR15As! + 2 amps and a crossover!! ... im aching today! :)
