dmx controller

hi i have been given a dmx controller and was wondering if i could get some advice as how to use it.

That's a similar desk to what I used to use when I did theatre lighting.

lol well it was free and for now its for a place i am resident every week were my gear is all set up etc

Personally I'd sell it and buy a PC based controller. Much easier to get your head round for a DMX newbie. :o

You should be able to program scenes to play automatically, but I've never used that desk so wouldn't be able to help you there.

You should have a 'Master A' and 'Master B' fader to operate the A Deck and B Deck.

If you set a scene on the top deck (A), put Master A up, which will turn on the lights that are assigned to the faders you have up.

You can then set a new scene on the bottom deck (B) and then fade 'Master B' up and 'Master A' down to change over to the new scene.

I apologise if this doesn't make sense, I'm pants at putting what's in my brain in to words and also if it sounds like I'm trying to teach you to suck eggs.

so will this work with my acme dyno's etc and the dmx out do i then just link from the desk to the first light the that light to the next one in a chain is that right?

In theory I would have though so, so you will have set the DMX addresses on your lights. However it's more a desk for par cans and theatre lighting, than for the usual DJ lights.

what computer software is there that people would suggest?

it looks as if it will work although as others have said, this is more for par cans than scans etc.

Put one of your dynamos on DMX channel 1 and have a play. Dynamos use 4 channels so the first 4 sliders should do something. Then experiment with more.

Remember you can set more than 1 dynamo to channel 1 if you want it to work in sync with the other ones.

I think it looks ok and you should be able to get some decent shows going on it. Don't expect quick results with anything relating to DMX though. There will be a lot of head scratching along the way.

EDIT: I don't think you need software. If you can get used to a hardware controller, it's much easer to press a dedicated button I think.

Daslight.

I got this (http://www.rygershop.co.uk/shop/article_12/Footlight-USB-DMX.html?shop_param=cid%3D3%26aid%3D12%26) which comes with Daslight Gold. You have to download the software from the Daslight website and the keycode built in to the foot controller which will turn the program from demo in to Gold. :)

It is a bit pricey but the good thing is that you can create light shows on the computer/laptop, upload them to the controller and off you go. No need for a laptop then.

You will need the laptop if you want to do on the fly stuff, like for weddings for example but for most discos, the controller on is fantastic. Just use your feet which leaves your hands on the playout system. :)
