Which Microphone ?

I have asked this question before, but have now set myself a rough figure of £50.00.

The Mics which I am considering getting are :
1. Shure 606
2. Shure SM58
3. AKG D77S

or perhaps the Sennheiser one if they still make it.

I asked a few opinions prior to posting this thread, and one point of view said that a mic is personal to a persons voice etc, another DJ said that he can not tell the difference between SM58 and AKG etc.

Of Course, I'm still left on the fence a bit here.

I'm also aware of cheaper models that are decent such as the Numark one, and a few others, but am aiming to get a brand name within the said price, as shown above.

If there are any Mics which you like that Aren't listed above, feel free to mention it in your post, as there's plenty of models out there.

I've gone with the AKG, really nice sounding microphone. I HATE the sound of the SM58 because they don't sound bright enough. When you've been in the voiceover trade for years and years, you will understand why I hate the sound of the dull sounding SM58. If I was to buy a Shure (which I probably would) then I'd go for the Beta 58 instead because it has a MUCH BIGGER frequency response and that the mic WILL sound brighter.

I would agree and disagree with the above post.

I would agree with the characteristics of the SM58, but what I disagree with that SM58 was never designed for voice over applications. The application of the SM58 as always been live sound.

DJMaxG: The Shure 606 are great little mic, but not good for DJ'ing and better used for Karaoke. The 606 lacks the warmth for DJ voiceover in live environment. They are great for Karaoke.

AKG have never been good in the vocal department and even to today I still believe they have got it right. I would only use AKG to mic up drums.

SM58 have been around for years and used as baseline for other microphones. If you want a sure bet then my money is on SM58.

We use the PG58 (wireless) which compared to the SM58 (wired/wireless) are very close to each other. The SM58 is dull in terms of mid range, but PG58 is dull in the higher range.

Max, Where can you get an SM58 for £50? Are you sure you're not mistaking it for the PG58?

I use the Shure SM58 Beta wireless, or a wired SM58. I have an AKG mic as a backup mic too.

I was wondering the same thing. I know they're cheaper these days, but I had no idea they were THAT cheap.

When I bought mine, I think I paid £120...although that WAS nearly 20 years ago!

For me, it's the SM58 all the way.

There's a reason why it's been the industry standard for so long.

There are convincing looking 'SM58s' to be found on eBay for £50 or so, but the chances that they are real, are IMO, about zero, the genuine items are usually around £90. Regarding the cheap ones, everyone who has bought one off the guy (and lots have) are delighted with them, go figure :dunno:

SM58 is industry standard. I have used both wired and wireless SM58 & SM58 Betas. I paid £100 for my SM58 wired about 4 months ago so I am not sure where you are getting a £50 figure from unless its second hand off Ebay?

I use all Sennheisser mics myself as I never got on with the SM range. I find they are very good all round and have a nice vocal curve.
It makes it easy to make announcments over music without dipping when required.

SM58s are more like £80+

If you pay less, you'll probably find yourself with a fake.

Maxwell, definitely avoid the cheap SM58s that frequently appear on internet auction sites. There are so many counterfeit mics around and not surprisingly, the 58 is a very popular mic to copy.

We buy "real" 58s around the £56 mark trade ex vat, ex sett, therefore anyone offering new 58s retail at £50 should ring rather loud alarm bells.

I agree with all of the above posts. SM58s can be anything from £80 to £110 nowadays. I bought a generic mic based on the SM58 and it's nice and bright and ok for karaoke but it's not an SM58.

I would choose any of the above as per my personal taste. I would go for the Shure PG48s thought at around the £40 mark.
