Thats a pretty stereotypical thing to say and one I dont find correct.

Ive done a few rnb nights at clubs and they have been really good. In your typical mobile nights you can still play a good few tracks which you may class as rnb.

The thing that annoys me more is that what people class as rnb isnt rnb at all.

Yup, that annoys the :Censored: out of me. It's when they come up and go "Can you play some R&B?" and I go "Like what?" and they go "Just some R&B?"

Then you play "some R&B" and the dance floor clears.... Or, more frequently, they come back up and tell you that wasn't R&B?!

These days if someone comes up and asks for a Genre without being able to name a track or an artist from within it, I ignore the request, because there's a good chance that even they don't know what they're asking for.

Do you know that must have happened to me 50 times.Its kidz who haven't been out too often and they have heard their mates say it....and they think it makes them sound GROWED up.

So for the sake of the older DJ's on here what sort of CLASSIC(???) floorfillers should we play when asked this immortal question.

The last time I was asked I played UB40 - Red Wine, and it went down a storm. R&B or Reggae? Go figure?! :P I'd expect Chris Brown to probably clear the floor (depending on what was being played before) - it's too old for the "kids" to go for it, and too new for the oldies, plus the intro is pants.

I'd love to know what other people have done in the same situation!

Bump! So how was it Daryll?? Mine was a cracker, the brides mother had a real 50's Rock n'Roll skirt and made full use of it on the dance floor to some of the Rock n'Roll/Jive that they'd requested (video to follow when I get a spare minute).

In contrast, I'm doing my niece's 16th next weekend which I'm expecting to be a dance/RnB/Bassline/DnB fest.

Not necessarily - I've had a real variety lately, remember the thread on Weddings where "Cheese" and "Party classics" have been requested not to be played? It sometimes makes a nice change to be told to play "anything fun", I did a run of kids leaving do's at the end of July where RnB and Chart music were requested a lot, and if you compare the tone of a track by someone like Flo Rida to someone like Steps (ok, extreme example) you'll notice that Flo Rida is pretty hard, serious music by comparison (goes without saying really). 2-3hrs of this twice a week actually makes for quite hard* listening.

* I can't find the right word to put here - negative, hard, serious?

I dunno if this is making sense or not, but it makes a nice change to be able to just play out "fun" tracks :D That's one of the big reasons I like doing the kids parties, playing out Steps, S-Club, N-Sync, F5ve, Bob the Builder, Rik and Nik, etc for 2hrs is great (especially when you see the parents dancing to "Reach for the stars...!")
