My prediction of produb!?

This might be a sweeping statement as I can't speak for all djs but I would really be interested in your views.

My understanding of produb is that once you have paid to rip your all your cds/vinyl etc you don't need to pay for it again. At this point if you stick to just using digital downloads you don't need the license any more especially considering there are quite a few websites offering substantial enough legal libraries of music to successfully do a mobile/club set.

Karaoke may still have a way to go but I'm sure in the future there will be many websites offering digital solutions to beloved past time of ruining other peoples songs :D .

So my prediction is that in the future produb will be no more.

What do you guys think? Utter rubbish or there just might be some truth to it?

I think making statements like that is only going to open a can of worms

Personally, I think they need to be seen to be enforcing this more but they are improving such as the reduced second year fee.

Oh, and re-downloading your entire collection to save on ProDub??? Gget real! Let's say you have 5,000 tracks (which is pretty conservative - i'm getting close to 18,000) at 79p per track thats close to £4k... enough to buy the inital ProDub licence and then the renewal for the next 37 years!

That is debatable, first of did you have the the original 18 000 songs on cd/vinyl or what ever? If you didn't have, did you considered that a cd will probably cost more than a download not to mention the extra expense of produb and your time ripping? My time is precious to me and I don't want to spend it ripping music.

Personally I think if you are very careful with your spending you can get a good range of music for the initial fee for produb of £250 with cheap compilation albums for example the ones listed in the music section. I think for about £250 you can get around 1500 - 2000 general songs from compilation albums and the latest top 40 to get you started.

Oh and with the greatest respect I wasn't aware that the future of the produb license had been discussed many times. If it has I'm sorry to have wasted your time reading this post and I'm sure you wouldn't want to waste your time replying, so please ignore it.

That only applies if you download the songs directly to the hard drive they will be played from, and many people (including myself) don't have that facility.

It doesn't bother me, though, as this year's ProDub licence has cost me the equivilent of £1.92 a week, making it one of my smallest business expenses.

What I'm saying is that with regards to downloads you can only avoid the ProDub licence if you download music directly to the hard drive it will be played from at gigs.

ProDub is required for copying and/or format shifting your music.

Therefore, if you download music to your home PC or laptop, and then copy it to an external hard drive which you then plug into some kind of controller at gigs, then you WILL need the licence.

I hope that clarifies the situation.

Thanks for you reply Rob and with the greatest respect it doesn't clarify the situation.

Lets say that you have a pc for example, you connect up a portable hard-drive to it and download your music straight to that hard drive and by pass the pc's hard drive (This hard drive becomes that 'hard-drive that you download straight to' therefore you can use this hard-drive on a laptop/pc/controller etc.

I will definitely be discussing this with produb at BPM this year.
