View Full Version : Denon HD2500 and hub help!!

Hi guys and gals,
having a major problem. just brought a denon HD2500 and i just got round to buying a powered hub, but when i plugged in my external hard drive and keyboard in together the keyboard started flashing and the hard drive suddenly went off and it looks like now that the hard drive is dead. what am i doing wrong (or what did i do wrong). just having trouble having both of the hard drive and the keyboard running together when its plug in to the hub and hd2500. I'm not sure if ive set it all up right so any help at all with this product would be appreciated.

Does the internal drive work?
Have you created a database yet?
What is your external drive formatted to NTFS or FAT32?

yes internal hard drive is working, well just tried plugging the hard drive straight in at first, ive loaded the music manager on to my laptop and transfered my tracks to the "create a database" section of it. not sure on the formatted part though. :confused:

I seem to remember that you can only use an external drive formatted to one or the other (can't remember which now!) and if you have the wrong one then it won't work.

Had a quick look and it only supports FAT32 and not NTFS, so check to see what your drive is formatted to.

well it's a WD passport hard drive if thats any help. how would i go about getting formatted to NTFS or FAT32?

no, the hard drive is not powered just a simple USB connection

That could be your problem then.
You are drawing your power from the media player which in turn doesn't like it.
Seperate hade drive (powered) with a hub plugged into the keyboard should do the trick.
Have you still got the reciept? if so take it back and get a Freecom formatted to FAT32 - or keep that one as back up for something else.
Maxtor also make a good hard drive although I never used one they come with a disc for formatting to FAT32.
But don't take my word for it :) there should be other people along in a while.

When I had one I had the Denon unit, a powered usb hub and the freecom tough drive for the hard drive (pre produb everyone, lol)
The hard drive was getting the extra power it needed from the powered usb hub so there was no delay in spinning up the hard drive and searching for music.
Again, this was in FAT32 so no problems there.
You can convert from NTFS to FAT32. You can get free software online to do this as I have had to do it once before on a personal hard drive. :)

I have no experience of the Denon 2500, but: Denon strongly recommend Belkin powered hubs. ( Cortex likes them as well. ;) ;) )
Tony is correct in suggesting the use of powered drives, as unpowered, or twin cable drives can indeed require more power than the Denon (or Cortex or Numark ) can provide, so a powered hub and powered drive is always preferable.
As to formatting drives, young Callum has an excellent sticky on this, read and learn. I'm no PC expert, but if there's any software on the HD, remove it. One model I and a friend got has backup as its main aim in life, and starts copying everything off the PC as soon as you join it up! :eek:
I checked the WD site, it's NTFS, so the Denon won't like it.
BTW, Cortex has read any and all drives connected, whatever format. I have found advantages with FAT32, but still run mine NTFS, cos I'm scared witless of data loss in power cuts.
Edit: Agree with Tom, it's not recommended, but it may work fine. I think it may depend on the make of drive.

Peter - is this a good time to tell you that I've been running HFS+ now for about a year - all the advantages of FAT but with the resilience of NTFS :p
Probably not for you, though, as HFS is an Apple standard which the Numark d2, DDS and iDJ2 happily work with ;)

Right, since I'm now in water about three feet above my head, would this HFS work with Denon/Cortex? I tend to have absolutely zero dealings with Apple products, so know nothing about them and asociated ones.
I'm sure I'd have no problems with FAT32 drives, and there are advantages to this system, particularly in searching for tracks when you go back one step instead of five! Perhaps I should get a couple more travellingbutalwaysstayingithevanbecauseofthPworde xtrabackup drives? :confused: :D :D

Denon/Cortex and HFS - you'd need to check.
Trouble is you'd need an Apple computer at the other end to prepare the things, so it's probably a no-go for you.
I now carry (two in the van obviously) three HDDs - two formatted HFS+ and one formatted NTFS with my archive on there, and two memory sticks with recent downloads/playlists for upcoming gigs on them.
About twice a year, or when the memory sticks fill up, I'll fold them into the archive and reindex everything (apart from the NTFS drive of course as there's no point).

Hmmmm. Perhaps this isn't the best time to ask if you've got a master stay at home personal use only backup hard drive? :sofa:
Nor to point out that substituting Cortex for Denon in your maths results in a perfectly workable arrangement. Sorry.
