Question For Those Who Run Pub Quizzes

As some of you will know I'm relatively new to DJing and recently I have done a few pub quizzes, one of which has really taken off and it's now become a firm weekly booking.

Whilst sorting out the contracts the Manager of the Pub gave me some paperwork (from either his Area Manager, or Head Office) which is to be completed every week, it details income from quiz sheets (£1 per team) and also income from Play Your Cards Right (£1 per ticket). The next box is where you enter this combined income (from sale of quiz sheets and play your cards right) and multiply it by 0.85, this then gives the net figure that is given away as the prize money if someone does play their cards right (if not it rolls over to next week).

Apparently, income from customers is taxable and the 15% deducted is the tax payable on the income and must be paid over to HMRC.

Has anyone else come across this, is this correct?

I'm asking because this is the only pub that has ever asked me to do this, and my limited experience (3 other pubs, all of which pay out the full amount taken in with no deductions) is making me wonder which is correct.

Having done quiz nights in many different pubs over the years, I've never heard of this before.

I have several friends who also do quiz nights, and I know they've never had this either, or they'd have told me.

Sounds strange and is something I've never come across, but that doesn't mean it's not the correct way of doing things.

I would contact HMRC and ask them.

If everyone pays to do the quiz and the money is paid back out as the prize, surely the only people who have any kind of income from the entry fees are the members of the winning team?

I asked that and was told it was not income but gambling tax, apparently, because we give out what we collect in it's classed as gambling.

Personally, it doesn't affect me one way or the other (apart from a bit of extra paperwork), but it did seem strange to me.

I'll try the HMRC website and see if they can clarify it
