So now we finally have this feature on the site, would you check it before going to a gig?

I would check it, but if perfectly honest, unless a venue is a great distance, would still have visited the venue previously. I would not be 100% confident taking others opinion, I like to check for myself.

What one person describes as a small room could seem huge to others (just a rough example).

I would be more inclined to use this as a guide for when quoting jobs ie access, stairs, limiter etc.

The venue database is primarily a resource for DJs run by DJ's. So it's up to all of us to enter venue details to help out everyone else, and make it the great resource it has the potential to be.

I have also put a lot of comments.

Maybe a few extra questions if the Venue Database takes off could be:

If there is parking is it free?

How much is a soft drink(on average)?

Were the staff friendly?

What is the venues condition? (drop down menu)

I have a feeling that potential customers/clients will pick this database up via google and will be used not just by DJ's and could also benefit from it.

Can venue owners and joe public view it though? Im not wanting to tell you guys how to do things, but theres a few venues where i could be more than critical too...and if the owners see it they may not be happy it.

Personally i think its a great idea in principle, i just dont want to see you guys open to any litigation :)

The public can see it, well I could on another PC without logging in to anything etc

Yes, the venue databse is currently viewable to the public. As well as being a resourse for all us DJs, we hope the database will be a good resourse for the public looking for ideas on venues.

Submissions to the database are vetted by the site admin, so anything litigious will be edited before going live.

Wont the site need to place a disclaimer though?

For instance

X hotel review "Place is run down, sockets werent working, staff rude and access is a nightmare bah bah bah"

Then anyone typing into google x hotel may pick up said review and takes issue with the site?

I also an concerned that it may reflect negatively on our businesses if we are seen to be "overly critical" of other service providers - albeit deservedly or not.

There are venues I'd like to warn other DJs about, or at least be honest about my experience...would it be therefore acceptable when writing an entry to use an anonymised name/business name?

Unfortunately not. As the listings will state the business name of the user who is submitting, you will have to take into account that when listing details of a venue. What we don't want is the database being used as a means to gripe about venues our members have issues with.

Full details of what will and wont be acceptable with regards to the databse will be posted shortly.

Just because its behind a login doesn't mean its not libelous. Something along the lines of "the views expressed here are those of the submitter and the MDD takes no blah blah blah....", strictly speaking the MDD is still the publisher though, it's a grey area.

Maybe have a "private comment" field on the listing which is seen by logged in DJs only and not by the general public. Doesn't solve the problem - but reduces it considerably.

I suppose that's fair enough, but IMO this runs the "risk" of members only submitting full entries for "good" venues. What is the raison d'etre of the venues database? To review venues so B&Gs can choose to hire them or to help DJs to choose whether to cater to them?

A couple of "never again"s in venue DOES speak volumes, but fact-based specifics would be useful, surely. Other members may have had an entirely different experience, and the option to add comments does lend the comments to be more balanced.

It does strike me that a members-only comments section would be extremely useful for an honest opinion if there ARE negatives: surely the whole point is to spare MEMBERS the difficulties some venues cause for DJs/artists. (That is to say, give the members enough information to CHOOSE...)

Incidentally, as "non members" can view these reviews, would any of the admin team mind if I suggested to members of the budding UK Wedding Singers Network (UKWSN) (which I am Admin for) that they use the MDD venues directory/site when THEY need info about a venue?

(Many of the UKWSN members don't "also DJ", so unsure if they really "qualify" to join MDD.)

I did try a Singers-specific sub-Forum on another DJ forum, but it kinda fell on its face with no takers: which is a shame as there is not the "community" spirit (yet) there seems to be with DJs. Welcome thoughts from admin/all.

How do we edit the venue details if for example they have a sound limiter installed after the venue listing is posted?
