I have watched a few videos recently where DJs are playing slow music and yet have effects lighting flashing away like mad, which I think looks really awful and spoils the general ambiance of the evening.

What do you have on for slowies?

Yes i think it looks to much with all the lights on when a slow song is being played, so i just have a couple of led pars on.
I also turn the " affect lights " off if sombody wants to say a few words latter in the evening.

Either a pair of datamoons on slow white rotate, with/without a sigma laser's 'stars' mode on slow rotate, or if the moons aren't on the rig then a couple of forward-facing LED PARs on slow colour fade. Or a bit of both :D For example, in a larger room I'll probably have the PARs on blue or purple static, with moons on rotate and laser stars on contra-rotate.

The joys of touchscreen DMX...

Or a mirrorball, but I only take this out to gigs where it's likely mandatory (eg golden weddings) or where it's been specifically requested.

Couldn't agree more. It looks horrid to see manic lighting during slow music selections..

I have my moving heads DMX'd doing very slow sweeping scans of the room and ceiling, either that or I have gobos rotating on the ceiling (see pic below from Saturdays wedding).

I had Datamoons and found them way too bright just on white. Where do you point them?

Straight down onto the floor.

They are bright, agreed, but with a puff of haze they make for stunning photographs. I had a wedding recently where I didn't take the moons due to the B+G wanting lots of lasers for a clubby set, and the photographer was bitching at me for NOT bringing them :)

In a smaller room I'll hit the power-saving switch which takes the brightness down about 20%.

Have done recently, all lights off and just star cluster laser on ceiling works well.

I tend to use just my two acme exercets pointing on the dancefloor and two par cans set to slow fade on the walls or ceiling. :D

I turn my Exercet OFF for the slow dances.

Colourbursts set to a slow fade between colours. Sometimes leave on static depending on the surroundings.

Had very positive comments, especially on Saturday night, when the band even asked about them for their own use.

Same as VV really, everything off apart from 2 x datamoons on very slow pointing at the floor. I'd like to find the best LED solution for this (if there is such a thing)

On Freestyler I'll have the Dynarocks on Pink doing a slow figure of 8, LED Pars on Blue (or Pink) and maybe the Impossibled on Blue Dots.

I have the irock scanners on slow which look really nice for my advanced shows

Basic shows have the led mystics which I can easily turn the microphone on the back right down so it goes very slow

As many have said, LED Par Cans as uplighters and a starcluster on the ceiling.

However I was once asked by a photographer at a wedding reception to put on every light I had during the B&G's first dance. He thought it would improve the photo. I wasn't entirely happy that this request would enhance the mood or moment and referred it to the B&G. They said they'd go with the photographers advice. It was so inappropriate that after 10 seconds the B&G said switch them off.

Anyone had similar?

Generally dont do any slowies (except first dance) but when I do its mirror ball only for me and possibly the movers on very slow.

Same but mine are set to a "purple" colour. I also have the LED Boogie on the ceiling performing a few dots.....don't get too jealous Darren ;)

A Lot of Part Time DJs I have seen at Party's etc, don't control their lights atall. Yes I admit, you don't need full DMX Programming, but something basic like a CA8 Control or 6 way Switcher/Remote pack maybe.


I would say Mirror Balls, Starball, Sunrays.

When running the fixtures 'sound to light', they should take care of themselves.

Set the moving heads to slow move with a selected gobo, leave the Abstract Twister 4HP's to do their own thing as the programming within them is red hot and switch to slow rotation on their own.

As above guys, depends on the size of show, on a small show a few mega pixel strips or mega bars set static pink or purple... or for a larger show moving heads set on to the mirrorball with a little haze for the classic look.... maybe even some bubbles!:)

Mr Part Time No DMX sez: I have my LED Blockbuster 6 LED bars set to slow fade with my American DJ white starball for First Dance etc... and then just switch on the Acrobats and set the LED bars to STL for party time.
