I got a letter from my bank today along with a cheque which was a deposit for a booking in november. The letter says the cheque had been stopped by the person who signed it.
This is the first time i have encountered this problem.
Has anyone else had a similar situation happen to them?

How strange? Does that mean they don't wish to go ahead with the booking? Have you contacted the client?

Contact the client and find out whats going on. Do you get charged for a stopped cheque?

Very weird!
I can only assume they don't want to go ahead with the booking, as I can't think of any other reason why they'd cancel the cheque.
As for charges, the client would have probably been charged by their bank for stopping the cheque. When I resigned from NatWest 5 years back, I think they charged about £8 to stop a cheque (unless it had been lost in the post).

It may be possible to reclaim the cost of the bank charge from the ex(?) client though?

Id contact the client and tell them. Without a deposit you wont be able to fullfill their booking.
I would ask the bank for a reciept of any charges made and then id forward a copy onto the ex client along with an invoice for the amount i was charged.
I havent ever been in this position before. Never but thats what id do i wouldnt stand for it mate. Its not your fault its theirs.

Ive only ever had this once which came as a shock when it did happen as i was charged £18.50 from HSBC, so like mentioned i contacted the ex-client and asked why ( but nicely ), the lady explained that is was he ex-fiance's account etc but was willing to pay the charges, which got the conversation onto why? He had cheated and she found out they split up so therefore there was no need for an engagement party :( , but the upside to this situation is i recently did a 40th birthday for her which went down a treat and she couldnt have been nicer.....
So the moral is just ask it might be a sad story but the outcome may be good in the end ( i feel she rebooked me out of guilt - doesnt say alot about me i know )

Soundmaster,
Can we have an update on this?
I assume you contacted the client, and would be interested to hear what they said.

I have contacted the client, they say that they did not stop the cheque and that the booking with me is still going ahead. She can only assume that its a chequue from a book thats not been used for some time. Her own bank have still not informed her that they were stopping a cheque that she wrote.
As you can immagine she is vey annoyed with the bank. Also she has paid me my deposit in cash now.

That's really weird.
As long as the account details hadn't changed, it wouldn't matter how old the cheque book was.
Apart from that, if someone writes a cheque which the bank do not pay for some reason, they ALWAYS write to their customer to tell them why.
When you were advised that the cheque was unpaid, what reason was given (refer to drawer, etc)? It might shed some light on the situation.
This one is a real mystery to me!

Not to me, the same thing happened with one of my clients. The cheque was stopped as he hadn't used a cheque for so long and the bank thought it was suspicious. He was only informed after I got the cheque back.

I still think it's weird!
Even if it IS an old cheque, as long as it hasn't been reported lost or stolen by the customer & the signature is fine, I don't see why the bank would be suspicious & refuse to pay it.

Because he hadn't used a cheque for ages and they thought it was suspicious.

I hope I don't have the same problem...because the cheque book for one of my accounts is almost 9 years old, as I also rarely issue cheques on that particular account.

I never came acrosss an unpaid cheque simply having the one word answer "stopped" in all my time in the bank.
I'm not surprised, though, as it doesn't really mean much. Stopped by who? The bank or the customer? And why?
