Backup Advice, please...

Hi Folks

Looking to lighten the load a bit and replace CDs as backup with something digital (main playout is Macbook/Traktor based) so thinking along lines of:-

Cortex HDC-1000
2U mixer
Compact case to put them in - preferably a 4U sloping top just to fit these - have looked around and can only find cases with sloping tops with more 'U's plus an extra 2U or more horizontal storage so way more than I need - is there such a thing?

All suggestions and comments gratefully received!

They arent rackmountable though are they? Or can you get the ears for them?

Otherwise you'll need a surface to put this unlike the rackcase which can rest on a deckstand if thats what you use?

You wouldn't want to rackmount it - it's an odd size - although I'm sure with a bit of tweaking it'd be possible to fit into a mixer or turntable flightcase.

There is a dedicated flightcase for the IDJ2 with a keyboard tray - ideal if you plan to use it more often than as a pure backup. For pure backup purposes it'll live quite happily in a £10 laptop bag.

I should add that it has line ins as well, and so could theoretically be used as a backup mixer for external devices too as well as backup playout in its own right.

No, they're not rack mountable, although mine doesn't NEED to be, as it came in a lovely custom case. Take off the lid, slide out a panel at the side & you're ready to go.

I'm quite liking that - doesn't get much neater and more compact for that kind of money (pretty much on budget as well at c£500). I assume it keeps the ipod charged?

Yes, as well as connecting the ipod it also charges it at the same time, and it has a really sexy colour screen!

Perfect for kids parties and outdoor events, too.

One IDJ2, one mic, one HDD full of tunes and a pair of active Mackies. Sorted.

Chuck up a couple of lights on a T-bar and you're up and running in about 5 minutes :o

Numark? Crash? Nah. I use a d2 Director as my main playout and in well over 2 years it's struggled just once with a corrupt mp3. Admittedly the IDJ2 hasn't had such as hard life, but I've used it for a handful of 2-3 hour gigs with no issues whatsoever.

The flightcase option is off-the-shelf.

Been looking at one of these myself for venues already having sound and light instaled. There are also a couple of venues I go to midweek where I leave a set of speakers and light setup there.

Demo'd one a few weeks ago and was really impressed especially being so lightweight.

They are Great units, but the Mic controls are on the front panel, and some DJs don't like all in one units.

I think it's great for those smaller applications though where you're mainly MCing with a bit of music. Perhaps a bit too small for true 'Hands On' though :eek:

They are Great units, but the Mic controls are on the front panel, and some DJs don't like all in one units.

Yes! - I saw it said Backup device, but the way it was worded and other comments gave the impression it would be main system.

If it's purely back-up why not think about using a Numark Omni Controller. One of my main play-outs is Macbook Pro running Traktor Pro, controlled with 2 x CDJ-400's using the DJM-800 as an external mixer - I have an omni controller that I use to record mixes on traktor using the internal mixer, so I guess the Omni would be as good as anything to have as back-up and it's only £250 or less depending if you shop around.

I assume you mean to use the Omni with Macbook/Traktor as backup playout? That's effectively what I have at the moment but with a Behringer BCDJ3000 (soon to be replaced with an Ecler Nuo4, much nicer) instead of the Omni. For backup I'm looking for something non-Macbook, non-Traktor so I'm then effectively using 2 different 'technologies' for main and backup - belt and braces stylie!

Found this Ebay Link (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=110436245475&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT) to a brand new IDJ2 - I'm just a little 'hmmmm' about it being around £100 cheaper than elsewhere which just seems 'too cheap'!! Have queried with the seller who confirms that it is 100% brand new, sealed etc but no, they don't have a physical shop, they just sell through eBay. Good feedback, powerseller etc - would you go for it?

£349 is incredibly cheap, as most people seem to be selling them for £500 - £550, but as you say it's a power seller with over 18,000 sales and a 99.5% feedback score.

I got my iDJ2 second hand last year, but it STILL cost me £650! (although that DID include the case & an ipod).

If this was me, I think I'd go for it, although I'd definately pay with Paypal for the added protection in case of problems.

Sorry, got the wrong end of the stick there - yeah what you're looking at looks fine as separate back up - Personally I think it looks like a hideous piece of kit, the i-pod sticking out of it makes it look like a cheap gimmicky toy - I'm sure it works brilliantly and people who use them like them (get that in before I get shot down in flames) - But yeah, sticking to what you originally said, looks great for a piece of back up kit.

My back up is the MEP-7000 at the mo, and then I've got an American Audio CK-1000 in case the :Censored: really did hit the fan :eek: so I'm there with you on the belt and braces stylie :D

The IDJ 2 is a dream, because everyone has Ipods these days, or Iphones etc ... so should anything just fail - drop it straight in and you're in business :D

However, I'm not knocking Apple. I used to work for Apple Macintosh as a programmer/developer when I left school. They manufacture really good hardware but I still think their stuff is somewhat overpriced. But that's just my personal opinion.

Would I be right in assuming that you can use the IDJ2 without an iPod and just use external HDDs? Or would that be somewhat defeating the object of the IDJ2 as it is made for iPod and there are other alternatives that just use HDDs? (I think I've probably answered my own question there!)

The iDJ2 has a couple of USB sockets in addition to the ipod dock, so you can plug in any hard drive.

I have an iphone for backup of backup of backup purposes (and for downloading the odd request live on the night) otherwise I only connect USB hard drives and memory sticks to my IDJ2.

I admit that the prices are high. £175 for the Ipod Classic is reasonable in My opinion, buy Yes, The IPhone Prices are far too harsh.

Not atall, I think it inherits the same technology as the Numark D2/DDS/DDS80.

It works in exactly the same way as it would with an Ipod docked. Some may see it as a gimmick, but at the end of the day all these £1,000 CD Players are, when a HD2500/D2 is perfectly good enough for the average mobile gig.

As a new Ipod Lover - It would be right up my street :p
