Well A good DJ should have expert knowledge from all matters from music selection, presentation of the show, use of the mic not just what you say but how much you use it.

A Jukebox is a faceless box that only plays music when someone puts in a few coins and picks their favourite album tracks that most other people would of never heard of let alone want to dance too.

A DJ is an entertainer, who as a part of his job will use his love of music and years of experience to intelligently, mix and seamlessly blend music from one track to another using an ever changing playlist. This talent goes hand in hand with all the other aspects of his job, which would be.....

Constantly judging the customer’s and guests needs (keeping the dance floor filled), Adjust the tone of music and lighting according to events happening around them (Buffet, First Dance, Speeches.... ect).

Compare if needed, entertain, and ensure that the customer’s schedule is kept to wherever possible.

Assist the customer in making an informed choice about how there event will run, a consultant.

That’s just the tip of the iceberg. :)

A Jukebox is a machine that plays music one track after another with no real intelligent order.

A DJ is a Jukebox, but also a Compere and 'Master of Ceremonys' also when required.

A Jukebox doesn't bring flashing lights and such comprehensive music libary either neccersarily speaking.

However, in my opinion a more accurate statement would be "A DJ is not a jukebox, although a DJ is more like a jukebox now than back in the eighties"

I'm pretty much a jukebox on Friday nights.

I play what the punters want (within parameters set by the venue)

Some jukeboxes also play random tracks between the ones that their customers request (much like my style of DJing) :sj: :sj: :sj:



Actually, I do put some thought as to what requests go well with the others &tracks that can link the requests. So maybe an AI jukebox. Now that would be good, a jukebox that selects filler tracks based on what was inputted by the punters.

Of course, you could see a jukebox as a positive thing. What do you expect of it? You expect to select songs of your choosing, and you expect them to be played back in due course, without any skipping and with decent sound quality.

That's not such a bad start for a DJ - but then some can't even manage that...

A DJ may easily be a Jukebox. They may take no requests whatsoever. They may take the middle ground as Steve's example.

Yes, we all groan when the request comes in for some thrash metal at a wedding anniversary, or " play this mate, they'll all dance" :bang: , but at least if it's a request, somebody's interested.

Personally, I always stress that I'm request led. My personal faves have only really tallied with the playlist once in thirty five years, so I've either got to use experience, intuition and luck to pick the right ones, or play what they ask for. I tend to take the easier option when possible. ;) :D :D

Depends on the event but I'd agree that I'm more like a jukebox, in that I play requests an awful lot, on pub nights.

For family events (weddings, etc), though, I tend to get a lot less requests in and have to rely on my DJ skills to give the people what they want.

I put a hell of a lot of thought into it.

& contrary to popular belief I do use the mic & hav a bit of banter with my punters.

I agree with Steve.
Twice a month on a friday I AM a jukebox because I do a night called 'Request Fest'. It covers all styles and is very eclectic.

Any other time I am NOT a jukebox.

A juke box gets to sleep in the venue over night and doesn't have to pack away.
