Used to be CD but now im totaly digital I buy all my music online from mixed places- amazon , 7 digital, etc. Still have a huge cd collection I really only keep to prove I own the rights to them since ripping them to digital format.

Customer eventually gets hacked off and calls me in. That's how I know about the freebie CDs.

Mainly legal downloads for me, rest are promos, but they only tend to be used for 18th's & 21st's.

I can definately see why laptop DJs for instance use them, because they can just connect to the internet and download directly to the HDD, and it's there then.

But if you're using Popular UK Download sites at £0.70-£1.00 per a track then if would work out more expensive than buying a Promo or Compilation. (and some are only in MP3 quality)

I suppose it saves ripping though. It used to take me about 1hr to rip a 5 disc / 100 track CD Set with WMP and the tags weren't accurate.

I can now probably Rip and manually tag it properly within that hour. (now using ITunes - hell lot faster and more accurate tags)

I still do the only buying CD's thing.

As i still DJ using CD's i find when i download tracks and burn them to CD to the crowd it looks like there illegal copies

Do you not use a Booth/Facade? :cool:

If its a compilation I want then I will probably buy the cd as it often works out cheaper than buying the downloads.
If its 1 or 2 tracks or some chart stuff I will download it from iTunes, DMC or mastermix.

I've voted for other, as all my music is sourced fairly equally between CDs and legal downloads.

I download all the new & current stuff from itunes every Monday, and also use itunes for any advance requests which I don't already have.

In addition, I buy bargain bucket type compilation CDs & box set CDs to top up my back-catalogue.

Promo's are free however!

As for being more expensive, most download sites bring out most of the big albums cheaper than the CD version.

For example, on 7 Digital in the last few weeks, they did David Guetta's, Calvin Harris's and Dizzee Rascals album for only £5 each.

Oh Yeh ... Just that people occasionly refer to stuff like 'CD Pool' as 'Promo'

That's good then, as most I saw were nearly £1 per track, multiplied by 30 tracks = £30 instead of £15.

Steve, I did put "Other" to comply with forum Rule 17 (http://www.forum.mobilediscodirectory.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=19228), it was really there for those who use lets say 'File Sharing' sites :sofa:

There is no way (virtually impossible) to maintain a full music collection just by collecting the Freeby CDs out newspapers. :o

The Poll is just really to see results on etc, so if you use __% Downloads & __% CDs, then write it in a Post :)

Although that is an interesting idea Max had- I did try one night to play only songs from free Daily Mail and Evening Standard CDs I found in a bar I was working in.

It's definitely do-able without veering too far away from a normal night.

if your good and well known dj its not hard to keep your collection up to date via promo however you would be very lucky to be in that position

Legal downloads for me. I dont think customers notice the cdr thing and i dont think the laptop thing really bothers people that much either.

My music library that goes to gigs is still mainly CD-based. However, I am currently building a decent sized library from legal downloads (downloaded direct to my gigging hard-drive). Most of these are sourced from 7Digital (I've been using it for ages now) and I take advantage of the free tracks, discounted albums (such as album of the week) and special offers very regularly! However, I read that HMV have chosen 7Digital to partner it for it's online store so I paid a visit to HMVs site and was very impressed. There's loads of bargain stuff and free tracks on there and it's a site I plan to use a lot in the future!

I also have a large collection of vinyl although this doesn't go out with me anymore.

There's a bloke round my way who only goes out equipped with giveaway CDs from the front of Sunday papers.

I'm sure he's not the only one... :o

I've got a few freebies in my library, too! They still get used for pub nights and for finding tracks that I don't have already. Couldn't take just those out on the road, though!

In addition, I buy bargain bucket type compilation CDs & box set CDs to top up my back-catalogue.

I think this is the best way to build up a good library quickly. As well as music stores, pound-shops, second-hand and charity shops are also a good source for these CDs.

That'd be me (except I use Play.com, 7digital and Amazon for downloads). I'd be the guy rooting through the £1.50 a go rack at Asda and annoying the postman with daily packages from eBay and Amazon :)

Although I agree the laptop thing probably doesn't bother people, I don't think it impresses them either.

Since going digital, I've had a number of comments from people who've come up to ask for a request, seen the screen on my D2 & said things like "Wow - it's all computerized!" Did I ever get comments on my CD player or would I get comments if I used a laptop? I doubt it very much.

I think this is the best way to build up a good library quickly. As well as music stores, pound-shops, second-hand and charity shops are also a good source for these CDs.

Completely agree...and don't forget supermarkets!

Our local supermarket is the Co-Op and, believe me, they don't do bargain-basement CDs (or anything else for that matter!).

I was refering to them being discounted heavily where still available (almost everywhere due to low uptake). As in literally 2x D2 = 1p

Yes, but I have been using a computer for around 6-7 years and there weren't many back then. I also have a rack with an HD2500, HC4500 and my mixer, which does look quite impressive compared to using domestic Ipods.

The only part of my playout system people can see at my discos is the D2 and the mixer.

Nobody can see my "domestic" ipod as you call it, because it drops down into a slot on it's side, as I think you already know.

I see no harm in Ipods atall, it is just a storage device, it's not as if you've got a cable routing out from the headphone jack of it going straight to the amp and controlling it by the cursor.

I have the 120GB Ipod Classic and am very impressed with it :approve:

As I've mentioned before, I don't use an ipod as such...I merely use the hard drive inside it to store my music on. All the controlling is done with the D2.

Digital DJs have their music stored on a hard drive, as I don't see why it matters where that hard drive happens to be, whether it's in a laptop, an ipod, an external hard drive metal box, a PC or whatever.

Max,

The lead from the ipod to the D2 charges the ipod as well as connecting it to to control the music, so you don't have to worry about the ipod's battery running out.

These days I would say the majority of my music comes from being sent promo CDs or promo "Digital Downloads" from various companies. I think I probably buy only maybe half a dozen downloads each month from Itunes or Amazon other than that.
