Anyone else noticed an increase in spiders the last few years?...especially big ones.

Noticed a strange one outside my living room window earlier, never seen one quite like it before. I took a pic of it, anyone know what kind of spider it is?

The piccy isn't actual size, the spider was big but not that big. :D

I heard something on the radio about this year being a record year for spider numbers, due to the ideal breeding climate. Personally, I don't mind them, it's flies, ants and woodlice I don't want anywhere near me! :)

isnt it strange how, when someone screems when they see a spider every laughs at them, but when someone screems on a plane every one else joins inn. :D :D

It's called a Cross Spider.

And yes, in my flat we have had the dreaded Common House Spider which is as fast as a cheetah!

No cats here, so some of the spiders are quite old.

I've even spotted a couple with walking sticks.

Oooooo I wish I hadn't clicked this thread.....I have the heebie jeebies now. I don't hang around waiting to see what kind of spider it is.....I usually scream till someone kills it and if not I build up enough courage to kill it myself.....hate them

Cant say Im a fan of spiders. Usually find them in the bath so on goes the shower on its highest setting :S

Im not sure how try its meant to be but on average in your lifetime you eat about ten spiders in your sleep?

I got one of those plug in spider things that emits a high pitched noise and sends pulses through the electrical wires, bit sceptical at first after reading reviews but I can honestly say it does work! Since we've had it in, not one. We turned it off for a couple of hours and guess what, big hairy cheetah spider running through the lounge again!

We paid about £15.00 for it but would highly recommend one....or several!

Spiders are our friends. They help to keep the fly population down. We've had a few flies in the house over the last few weeks so could've done with a few extra spiders!

A good example of the common European garden spider (Araneus diadematus).
Very common this year due to the almost perfect weather conditions we have had . al thou rare , the big ones can pierce the skin and give a nip.
only the females build webs , and always point head down, as a silly fact , they eat their webs over night and then re build in the morning.

the other fine pic is a common house spider (Tegenaria domestica )
one of the fastest running spiders in the world , the males are very active this time of year , hunting a mate , they can live several years , and the male stays with the female for a time , mating several times , the female does not kill the male , however the male dies soon after the mating sessions , and is then devoured.
