View Full Version : Disposing of old CDs

I've got a stack of a few hundred used CDs, which I've been saving up because I always thought I'd find a use for them :o

I was actually thinking about using them for an 'art attack' :D A large mosaic or something... but I really don't have room for them anymore so they've got to go. I don't really want them going into a landfill, I try to recycle as much as I can. Does anyone have any suggestions?

It's not my music collection!! :o

It's a mixture of out-dated software and games, free music samplers - that sort of thing.

Sensible suggestion time.

Chuck them in your dustbin so they go to landfill. It's cheaper & uses less energy than recycling, and that's a fact.

The argument for recycling is actually a really weak one.

If there's any personal data on them or if you're unsure of the exact contents, it would be a good idea to shred them.

I'm unsure if the local recycling centre would accept them, does anyone happen to know if their recycling centre accepts them?

The use of energy is hardly the point, they're non-biodegradable - landfill is a finite resource, ultimately, and we need to be more proactive about that sort of thing.

If the power used to recycle them came from wind power who cares?

If recycling them reduces the need for aluminium that's also a plus.

Considering the mercury and effluent in our seas, the depleted state of our topsoils and the filth in our rivers I'm disappointed that your solution is dressed in green by saying it saves power.

I'm sure there's a VERY high chance that the power to recycle them would be wind power...not!

I am but I'm not on about cost to someone, I'm on about cost to the environment. It's the 'cost' factor that see fly-tipping of commercial waste, the illegal dumping of industrial waste and so on.

Making something from scratch requires primary produce - all primary produce is a finite resource.

Recreating a primary product through recycling may cost more, but at least it means we're stretching the availability of the resources in question.

On second thoughts, I don't think they should go to landfill.

...as a quick update - I took them to my local recycling centre and asked one of the attendants there - "Landfill, mate" was his reply. So, I did make some sort of an effort, but at the end of the day, they're going to the same place they would be if I threw them in my wheelie bin :(

CDs are dense polystyrene with an aluminium top. So re recycle them isn't really possible. :(

So re recycle them isn't really possible. :(Without knowing too much about recycling processes, I'd have thought that there must be some way to remove the aluminium layer (chemically strip it?), and then melt down the plastic. Obviously it's not an economically favourable route to go down though, or I'd have found some way to dispose of them properly!
