Hi people hope you are all well.

How about this email that i got from a local company regarding a works Christmas Party.

Hi there

Could you provide a quote to dj (music, few lights etc) at our work xmas party.
Quite a small sized room, about 70 people in attendance, on wed 23rd december.
We would need you to be there and set up by 5pm and keep the music going until people leave, probably around 11pm latest.
I have done a bit of research and ideally would like to keep costs to around the £200 mark as this seems to be the average.

look forward to hearing from you

best wishes

Here was my response.

Hi xxxx, thank you for your enquiry.

The cost for a six hour Disco would be £300. 00.
With all due respect, i don't think that you will find a reputable Disco supplier for £200. 00. for a six hour Disco.

Please feel free to get back to me with any questions that you may have.

Kind regards

Gary

Hi Gaza,

With all due respect, all you've really done is to give them a quote, and one which was 50% more than the figure they mentioned, so I'd think you would be unlikely to get the job based on that reply.

What happened to selling yourself & your service?

Hi Rob

Yes i know what you mean.
I don't ussually respond in that way to an enquiry, but i was supprised that a company in this area would expect to pay such a small amount for a Disco.

I would have certainley picked up on their use of the word "average" and explained why my service would be more than average, before giving a quote. Also, if they've contacted other DJs, why haven't they booked one of them yet? Have they not found anyone they like the look of? A bit more to go on there too, in terms of justifying your charge.

With the right response, you could have been in with a chance, but I'd only respond similar to how you did, for people wanting to spend around £100.

I think by replying in an email with the words "with all due respect" all you will have done is come across as rude and I think there is very little chance you would get the gig no matter what you quote.

I agree, usually "With all due respect" translates as "You know bugger all" :)

With all due respect, I think that you've cocked up there. You could have pushed them to £300 fairly easily with a more considered reply and some decent pics on the return email.

By the look and the wording of the email i think they are most likley to go for the "cheapest option" they can get.

I would reply back and tell them what i can offer and what makes me different from the others.

You may of well just said sod off!

£200 is my fee and I am very reputable - However, I am up North and don't do mid week work.

If I had been you I would have suggested you could have explained you were £300 and why and let them make the call. They may be a future customer when the none reputable guy is pants (unless they get someone okay)

This has happened to me - I knocked back an engagement do earlier this year on price. I have the wedding booked in for April next year!!!!

I am not expecting to get the gig.
Yes they may up the budget a little bit but not to £300.

Why bother quoting £300 when they have a budget of £200.

Surely it would been more polite to let them know that you are not in their price range but thanks for the enquiry anyhow.

I converted a £375 booking for this year, when they told me they'd had a quote from another DJ at £220 (which was true as I stumbled across the other DJs website :p )

Obviously it's up to you, but for the sake of sending a proper professional quote, you may have got this one, there's no need to dismiss it straight away, I mean what have you got to lose by replying properly?

They didnt say £200 was the budget- they said thats the going rate.
Very different things.

In this case I am not sure what the point of the reply was- you need to give people a reason to pay above "going rate" when they send a mail like that and simply quoting a price with little explanation or reasoning will very rarely result in a booking.

In this case I think the reply was equal to the original email.

Personally I think what their budget is / was / was going to be is not the point.

The e-mail enquiry was pleasant enough requesting a quote for disco and giving an indication of the sort of quotes they had received already.

In my humble opinion it didn't warrant the response given. I have had people ask me for quotes and when I quote my price - as already stated - tell me they have had quotes of much less. I thank them for their interest explain what we offer and why it costs what it does and let them make their decision.

Because they have had a cheaper quote is not their fault. Because they maybe don't understand the difference does not mean they are an idiot.

People want to pay a certain amount all the time- but I would say its a fair point that the guys on this forum who are getting the higher paid bookings are the ones who can really sell themselves and the service they provide.

Not true at all, sometimes maybe, but every customer wants value for money totally different thing.

Maybe I phrased that wrong- what I meant was you will often get people who hear a couple of prices and then "want" to pay that, but thats only because no-one has explained why prices differ.

Hi Rob

Yes i know what you mean.
I don't ussually respond in that way to an enquiry, but i was supprised that a company in this area would expect to pay such a small amount for a Disco.

My day to day job is working for a major supermarket in the town. We did a disco for the branch I work at back in September at a family fun day.As I worked there I said we would do it at a greatly reduced rate, only £180 for the standard 4 hours and at their request we included some karaoke at no extra cost.
From the feedback we received after the event the organising commitee at the supermarket said that they felt that everyone there had enjoyed the evening but that any another disco could have done what we did for that price.
I don`t think that they would get another disco and karaoke for less than £200 from anywhere else so it does seem that some companies, even major companies, have little or no idea of the cost involved with putting a disco on.
Oh by the way the original amount they were prepared to pay was £150:eek:

I'm only down the road from you - I really need to put my prices up! I'm not charging anywhere near that and I've still had people trying to knock me down considerably (or email me saying that they've been let down by a bloke who was going to charge them £120 for 4hrs). It's finding a tactful way of saying "that's why he's only charging £120 and I'm charging £xxx".

Depends upon how wide the area covers.;) Only know of one person,a friend of mine, that does karaoke in the town and I have no idea how much he charges.
We`ve got a Mastermix karaoke set of 30 discs that cost near on £200 and together with the extra equipment involved, extra mikes,t.v(to show the lyrics on), karaoke DVD player etc. I`m sure you`ll understand why we have to charge around £200 to get some sort of return on our investment, especially as we`re just getting into the karaoke business and don`t do many karaoke nights.

Yes Im not disputing the fact of the costs involved with legally providing a karaoke service however I know of a few people that operate at lower prices and Ive heard but no proof that they all share their collections etc.....

Its why Ive not got karaoke and only offer it for an extra £100+ to quotes as I can hire it for it for £60 per night but even then I dont mention it to customers only offer if they ask about it.
