How would you rig up the following gig......

NYE gig booked and confirmed via contract this morning and quite happy with the arrangements.

Its in a hotel part of a large chain so hoping it leads onto some good work afterwards.

Its a 60's/70's themed disco 7pm-12.30am.

Now all my lighting is "movement" but where I have to set up I dont think I would get the most out of it being in the middle of the bar area and theres loads of walls in random places.

I was thinking to fit in with the theme of the evening to use some flood lighting. Just wanting thoughts from you guys as it'd be nice to use lighting to tie in with the theme but i dont want to use traffic lights or light screens..........(I feel dirty just typing that)

Also any ideas on outfit? Im thinking the typical 70's wig with flares and shirt?

Without seeing the layout I can't really make a judgement but the floodlights sound a good idea. I would be tempted to rig up some Par Cans on T-Bars at the opposite end of the room to flood the room with colour.

As for attire for the evening. I have a white Saturday Night Fever suit and black shirt that the missus made for me. I usually wear an affro with that and some glasses if I do a 70s night.

Its hard to describe the layout but I'll try my best (should of taken a photo thinking about it)

As you walk in the room is a fair old size (can hold easily 150). However theres loads of partition? walls. As you walk in and look left you'll see me and theres a solid wall behind me (just about enough to set up in and best place for access to power). Theres wooden flooring from there to the bar area so can easily have 30 people dancing without it causing an issue. If you go and sit down on any of the sofas etc.. though you wont see me.

Either that or I have just the mystics pointed down on the floor but I was thinking of using some par's but only have one skytec as of this moment.

I may move into led uplightiing at some point in the future so something that I can dmx together on a gentle fade that can later be used as uplighting would be good or shall I get an ADJ panel...........

Mirrorballs and pars. Simple and effective.

right well if its on the deckstand its not going to be an issue but ideally I'd like to get it installed in venue but its going to be a good 15 feet off the ground plus a good 15-20ft away from the deckstand itself.

just make sure your cover insurance wise if rigging in the venue!

Yes good point Tus. I use safety chains on my heavier lights and Im thinking Im correct in they have wooden beams that go across the ceiling so should be a simple install. (this is just an idea at the moment and Im going to have a think before I approach the venue about the idea).

I just used pinspots as an "idea". Is this the best way to go with use regarding the mirror ball??? Im thinking they are cheap lights though so might be onto a winner with this idea.

pinspots are great for mirror balls.
just a not when saftying a mirror ball, make sure the ball is safety'd to the motor and that the motor i safety'd to the rig

With some LED pars it would be possible to DMX some scenes and simulate 'traffic lights', strobes and various other effects of the era. :)
Might also help with illuminating the ball. And still leave you feeling hygenic ? :)
Even the cheapies like the Thomann £30 touches can be controlled like this.

I would think, from your description of the venue, that one ball fixed to the beam in the centre would be the most authentic looking. I do occasionally use two at the ends of the truss, but this works better in rectangular rooms without obstructions or on a stage with 'wings'.

If it is the case I might be better installing the pinspot(s) on the beam either side? which is getting about out of my comfort zone when I think about it......

A mirror ball or two sounds a great idea, that and a couple of these would be spot-on for the theme. :)

I used to have 6 of the original oil and optikinetics wheel projectors back in the day, these were classic effects in the 60's, 70's and early 80's. I still have a couple of Rank Tutor2 projectors that I used to use for 70's nights but these are very old and need some repairs, I would definately buy 2 of these new ELC versions when I next do a 60'/70's themed night.
