Just dropped the better half off at work (local WMC)
Had a quick nose at the DJ's kit.
DOES he know about PAT tests??
3 lights, all unbranded and battered. I think one was a Motivator.
An amp that looked more like a generator, sideward on to his CD desk.
To top it all.........7 single sockets (deep pattress boxes) screwed to a piece of plywood.
I think the best bit of kit was his deck skirt.....No Black sheet covering the 2 tables that belonged to the club....
TBH I was more disgusted than shocked.
I wish I could have got photos. IMHO it's as bad a driving while drunk with no license. NO WAY did he have PLI.
Sorry to slag another DJ off, but I was told he had been in the business for 25 years :Censored:
Completely shocking...

We have loads of these type of threads that serve little or no use at all.
There are people on the circuit that will do this and there is nothing you or I can say or do that will clean these people up.
As long as you are happy with what you do and how you go about it.....that is all you can do. :)

Phew, just got back from staffs, done a WMC - nice earner :D
I think the best bit of kit was his deck skirt.....No Black sheet covering the 2 tables that belonged to the club....
We don't all have deck stands and need to use whats there. I generally need a 6 foot table supplied by the venue and if they don't have matching table cloths like wedding venues do, then its out with the black sheet/table cloth.
As for the rest of it okay so thats how he chooses to operate.

Thats one comment I agree with.
Maybe I'll put it forward, next time I take her to work.
It's not so much getting away with it. It's wether he is putting having no commen sense before health and safety.
Missus came home and told me, that the host of the party was a little reluctant to let the DJ continue let alone pay him.
It's not a matter of how good his rig is, or at least having work.
The partiers were there to have fun but also there were small children there.
I know for a fact members of this forum take pride in their rigs and their work.
If this bloke had PAT certs then why do we bother to care for our kit at all.
While employed, the tools of my trade had to be certified safe. From 15 ton forklifts to having a shovel in my van.
The point is I do it the safe and legal way, because I care about peoples safety.

There was a thread recently asking about mistakes we all made, myself and Im sure a few others have operated in a poor mannor and in my case I didnt know how bad it was til I joined this forum. If I hadnt god only knows what my set up would look like, how many gaps in my musical collection and all the rest of the things that matter in running a succesful mobile disco service.

Good point. I have learnt from the forum in the last couple of months and we were quite a good set up. Wire police would have had me though! Would have done hard time in the wire correctional facility. Getting some velcro to sort that out.
Need to think about front of house next! Still working off the venues 6 foot tables. Need a bigger trailer first though!

Some people are not going to change just because someone says that they are not working in the correct manner.
Yes it's annoying when we go to parties, see a dj and think, oh my god what is he/she doing. But if they don't want to change they're not going to.

So just because his lights are unbranded and battered, they cant be PAT tested ? Just because he isnt using a deck skirt he doesnt have PLI ?
If the clients and public were happy with his performance then he is doing something right. Not everyone has the same standards of equipment and some will use what they have until it goes wrong and needs replacing. Maybe he has been going for 25 years and doesnt update his gear very often. If you didnt ask him for certificates then how can you say he isnt working legally.
I have a couple of lights that are getting past there best and I dont use a deckskirt but I have PLI and PAT. If the gear is electrically sound and in reasonable condition there is no reason why it coundlt pass the PAT.

At the end of the day, if no'one spoke to the bloke (DJ) then it's all just assumptions.
Was the DJ any good?
I've said it before but I've seen DJ's who have been using gear that looked like it was pre-historic but they have been great and have got people up dancing. I have also seen DJ's who have had some pretty top notch equipment and it has been presented well yet they have been dire (in my opinion) with no idea of how to string along some decent tunes togeather, get the dancefloor going and no microphone skills.
I know to a lot of people, especially the likes of us on here, say and believe that presentation is very important and I personally like everything to look good but at the end of the day, if he was decent enough and the guests had a good time then fair play to him because at the end of the day, that's what matters yes?
If he was operating with no PLI and his equipment was not PAT Tested (do you know this for sure?), then that's down to the venue surely? If they want to breach health and safety etc by booking someone who ALLEGEDLY does not have at least PLI then I think it's their fault.
I won't go into the whole 'cowboy' thing as that's a different subject but there could well be a number of different reasons as to why his set up looked the way it did and if people took time to actually speak to these guys instead of running straight to the forum to moan about them then we may get a full story rather than having to make our own assumptions.

These 'critisism' threads are getting boring, I have tried to resist replying but am a bit bored tonight so here goes.
Firstly we do not know the fee (although insignificant), whether or not he had PAT, PLI etc, so should not comment without knowing the facts.
Like it or not, there are venues out there who's clients will not pay more than £x for a disco (WMC was mentioned !!). Therefore DJ's are still required and have demand for this market. If this is not your market, forget about it !!
This guy, you say has been in the market for 25 years - surely he must be doing something right then ?? I would envisage very small percentage of members of this forum lasting that long.
As far as the equipment looking old and battered etc - so what ! If it does the job and brings in the money this guy is wanting, why bother changing ??
It does annoy me a bit when guys like this try to go to nicer venues, where the B&G think they are getting a bargain, when in fact they do not realise what will turn up. However, for a WMC this is what, dare I say, is expected.
I have a WMC which use me regular and I put another DJ in for the gigs. They actually prefer when I set up on a table, use their flashing lights in the ceiling etc etc. Don't ask me why, but they do.
All in all this guy is meeting demand at the fee his clients want to pay so leave him to it. As far as PLI and PAT you will be suprised how many so called 'cowboys' actually have this in place.

:bang: Being a newbie to the forum I didn't expect to cause such trouble.
I honestly thought you guys had a passion for your work......Read on chaps and chappesses.
Like I said before, it's like driving drunk with no license, if something goes wrong you put lives at risk!! If your not insured YOUR IN TROUBLE!!
I own a disco shop for heavens sake, if my shop caught fire and you got burned you would make a claim (I'm insured so you'd get a payout)
I have been in the mobile business since 1994. So I feel I am very experienced in the mobile field. Having played more than 1200 gigs myself.
In 1998 I completed my Electricians course, hence being a qualified PAT tester. If he did have PAT certificates then why do I bother throwing kit out??
I have since found out this guy was doing a favour as he was a family friend...... It may change things slightly, but.....And it's a BIG BUT!!
They have now asked me to check out future bookings.
My concerns were raised at the WMC committee meeting. They will now only allow mobile setups who show they have the relevant insurance and documents to ensure members safety.
I am an agent in the midlands and to date I now have 26 DJ's on my books. I have seen every single rig, and must state I am impressed with the standard that they all work to.
Harsh as it sounds, a friend told me "You DJ's always seem to be slagging each other off".....So from now on I'll keep me negative thoughts to myself. Rather than slate them I'll help them improve, for starters this guy needed to scrap all of his kit that was either on display or had not passed a PAT test.
Sod the rest I'm legal. Let the cowboys get away with it :bang: :bang: I pride myself with a professional repretation...

True, but then again, a license is compulsory - PLI insurance is not. It's the DJ's choice whether he should undertake PLI insurance and PAT testing or not - it is not a basis to negatively judge the DJ on. A DJ of 25 years must know the risks of not holding insurance, and i'm sure he would be prepared to face the consequences if something bad did happen.
I honestly thought you guys had a passion for your work
A DJ of 25 years shows much more passion in his business than one of a decade with PLI insurance.
To cut a story short - what can anyone do about it? He knows the risks of not having PLI. By the way, how do you know he doesn't have PLI or PAT documentation? You are basing your assumptions on thin air.

Why would he need to scrap it? Surely he could get it serviced and tested?

Couldn't agree more...
While the economy effects the general public, it also effects us as DJ's. More and more people are resorting to "iPod Parties" or letting their friends do it... it's a mini recession all over again.
I have since found out this guy was doing a favour as he was a family friend......
So he is doing it as a favour, yet you rip the :Censored: out of his equipment? I'm sure the client was happy, as would I if he was doing it out of a favour and I didn't have to pay him anything. I wouldn't mind if he turned up with just a basic sound system, let alone lights in the first place - whatever the quality.

Nobody expects to, but it can happen. ;) You've picked a subject which polarises opinion. While nobody likes to see folk working with way below par kit, neither do they like to see fellow performers being "slagged off". You can't win on this one, and if I were to post a piccy of my rig from say four years ago, I'd get a right pasting. :o Customer satisfaction however was very very high, so was I doing anything wrong? As I've famously said before, if the end result is a satisfied customer, then the job's a good 'un. The end may justify the means.

Well ive just seen a proper cowboy and before any one Quotes me on this ive actually spoke to the "dj" and he was very honest lol went out last night and ended up in a local pub near me and got told there was a functions room upstairs for the kids to go in with a disco, so my first thoughts were brill, Now this is were it all goes south and quickly
1.2 lights ( 1 with dodgy wireing on the back ie: cable block with a plug lead into it)
2.dual cd players ( not like what alot of Dj's use i mean it was literally a 2 draw cd player)
3.No pat testing on anything
4.No pli at all, i asked and his faced looked puzzled like he didnt understand
5.3 carry bags of cd's, for which he just played a fewtracks from each with out mixing or anything, literally just played the music track to track
6.After a quick convo etc he mentioned that it was just a quick £50er and he was bored Crapless (but used the S word ;) )
7.Dress sense now this is were it shocked me leather coat,bluey-grey fleece jumper, stone washed blue jeans with rips int he knees and black boots
Now again before any one jumps on me i spoke to him and he seems a preety sound guy but he stated he's been doing Discos etc for the last 5 years and this was his only set up he had which he has no table etc
Will post a few pics that he quite openly let me take lol
Cheers Dave

I wouldn't post any pictures of any rigs (unless it's your own and in the correct area) as this can/does cause alot of stupid comments and unkind remarks that the MDD does not wish to see or be associated with.
Thank you.
