For the benefit of those who don't know (including Gaymers & Magners among others apparently) you can not make cider with pears.

The drink made with the same process as cider, but with pears as the main ingredient is PERRY

Further research suggests that the term 'pear cider' is equivalent to perry.

The Campaign for Real Ale's (CAMRA) definition of "real perry" is in parallel to that of real cider:

A) Ingredients
The liquid contents before fermentation must consist entirely of non-pasteurized apple (Cider), or pear (Perry) juice.
No apple or pear juice concentrates to be used.
Normally, only the sugar naturally available in the fruit should be used to cause fermentation, but in years when the level of natural sugar in the fruit is low, the addition of extraneous sugar to aid fermentation is acceptable.
B) Process
No pasteurization to take place during the production process in relation to the cask product.
No added colourings to be used.
No added flavourings to be used.
There must be no artificial carbonation for draught products.
Sweetener may be added to fully fermented Cider/Perry to make it sweet or medium.
The addition of water is permitted to bring the alcoholic content of the Cider/Perry down to the level required by the producer. Ideally, however the minimum juice content should not be lower than 90% volume.

In a pub ill have a a few bottles of Magners, Bulmers, Strongbow whatever cider is on pump or bottle if i feel like it. I went in a pub on boxing day with family and i only had 1 bottle of Magners because i just didnt fancy a drink.

All because of none payment for kit they hired from me....whoops....My mistake for not asking I suppose...lol

Had a few cans each night since, while watching Star Wars (12 disc set) with my little lads.

Last NYE I was recovering from being seriously ill, and couldn't drink (other than the odd Guinness) so this new year I'll be going as far as being just tipsy to make the most of it and hve a laugh ;)

A few suggestions:-

If you want a strong ale, I recommend the local brew in North Cornwall, Camel Ale, 12%+. My nephew only allows tourists to drink 2 glasses at a time, just in case! :D

If you want a really smooth whisky, I would suggest a nice 25 year old Ballentines. I gave a tot to a neighbour (not a whisky drinker usually) and he said it was a beautiful brandy. I had to show him the label to prove it was whisky! Only problem is getting it, you may have to settle for a younger one.

At the moment, we are drinking a rather good chianti, only £3.75 from Tescos and almost as good as the local vintage we had in Tuscany.

I'm decidedly and utterly not a whisky drinker. BUT: I do know that there is as much variation and choice in whisky, as there is in beer. Once upon a time, I told a publican I couldn't drink whisky. This may offend whisky purists, but I rather like Southern Comfort. I appreciate that technically it's a liqueur, I think.

(Angela has a theory as to why ol' bushy black brows put such an increase on it. All those ice crunching Magners drinkers! Cider is supposed to be drunk warm, room temp, or cool, not with bloody lumps of ice floating in it! You wouldn't put ice in lager or ale why cider???? The trouble is, once these idiots have gone on to the next "trendy" drink the rest of us long term cider drinkers are left with the price hike)

You might want to indulge in a fact finding mission to the drinks section in Aldi. For anyone who likes German white wines, they do one of the best I've ever tasted.

Did a bit of work for them a while back and was treated to some very nice beer and hospitality.....shame it's not at Wandsworth anymore. :(

See if you can buy it up there. It really is a decent beer. Not sweet and sickly like barley wine. A good bitterness, coupled with a fragrant nose. (I'll try and make the description more pretentious next time!)

They used to have a brewery in Henley, not far from here before it shut down in 2002. I used to work in a pub years ago and we did the brewery tour - it was a very small and old fashioned brewery, fantastic.

I didn't drink bitter at the time, but they had something brewed on site called OBJ (Oh be joyful) which I seem to remember being a very good pint.

Went out yesterday and bought myself a 70cl bottle and 2 bottles of pepsi. Liquid marzipan. Tastes just as it smells. Really happy that I have found something that I could drink if I wanted to. :)
