Strange title for a thread but I am really not having much luck at the moment with venues

Last weekend I had a wedding where the bar was on a different floor to the function room, this weekend the bar is directly below where the DJ area is!!!!

Yes that's right, I'm positioned above the bar (about 25 feet above the bar) on a gallery about 150 feet from the dance floor (I kid you not)

To get to my loft I have to carry everything up a narrow staircase that is accessed from the function room, guests have no way of making requests (unless they use semaphore or write down what they want in letters big enough for me to read).

When visiting the venue and talking to staff I got the impression this is where they put visiting DJ's as opposed to their resident DJ who gets to set up in the main room close to the dance floor. The Manager asked if I had powerful enough speakers and bright enough lights to be effective from the gallery and seemed disappointed when I told him that I had more than enough to cope with the room.

Can remember a spell in the 70's when a lot of the clubs went with this loftier than thou approach....with dj's in a cubicle half way up the wall!!

You think that's bad - I had a private birthday party gig where only 11 people turned up.

YUP! JUST ELEVEN PEOPLE.

Most of the eleven were family members.

The host got so drunk at one point, she just layed on the floor. :beer1:

Then there was a row between the host and her boyfriend.

And to finish the night off they tried to drive off without paying, until the bar owner (6ft 4") jumped in front of the car. They hadn't payed him either!!!

And then they had the cheek to say that I hardly worked for my money!!! :Censored:

I recently had an enquiry where the setup was almost identical, with the load in being a logistical nightmare. After several emails back and forth and getting all the details, I decided it was more trouble than it was worth. I declined the booking.


Sadly for me I didn't have the benefit of your experience, I took the booking a while ago and didn't know/hadn't checked out the venue at that time.

Sometimes I just hate learning curves!!!!!!!!!!!

To put a bit more of a positive on this. Yes, it's an absolute pain getting the gear up there, but with the lights shining down onto the floor, the set up can really look amazing.

Not being able to get to you to make requests is lousy, but this is one situation where leaving slips downstairs with a mobile number to text requests to may be a good idea????

Now that's a brilliant idea, I'd never have thought of that but I am so going to do that. I'll make sure every table has slips with my name and telephone number on and inviting them to text me requests or dedications.

It was a last minute booking..lesson learnt! :agree:

Last minute booking rule number one---unless its a trusted source.

Get paid in cash before playing ANY MUSIC.

Or in some cases I have heard of---dont get the gear out the vehicle until you are paid :D

Invariably these can be rate tarts who have been let down or disorganised people.

I have always set up on the floor in Berties Banqueting suites JTRS.
I have worked in both parts and I must say it is hard work getting the gear in and out of there but I have had some great nights in there which compensates it.

Apparently it's the number of guests that has pushed me up to the gallery, they usually let DJ's set up next to the dance floor (resident or none resident), but it's a capacity crowd so no room for me down there.
