I think you'll find many thousands that disagree with you. I can see what you mean with the vid in question, but in fairness J has done a lot for the industry.

I'm not isolating this video in particular (I'm sure there may be legal issues, even despite the fact that YouTube has resolved the PRS issue), I was making the point that Jonothan is hugely popular, and has done a fair bit for the industry in the way of instructional videos etc.

Exactly and you only have to look at the number of bedroom boys and wannabes in this industry and there's your answer.
Can you really take someone seriously who turns up for a wedding in a stately home wearing baseball cap and jeans and proceeds to film throughout the house?

I don't see what all the shock horror is all about, I think we all are perfectly aware this can be done (from a technical viewpoint). Personally, I don't have a problem telling a punter I don't have a particular track if it's requested. I certainly wouldn't play an inferior you tube clip to pander to them.

Not just legal but i can see there being huge quality issues here as well. Would you play a track if it was distorted, skipping or was just generally bad quality?
YouTube is not famous for its high quality, High Resolution video's.
I love the idea of getting any track you want, where you want, when you want it but i feel there are much better ways of getting it (i.e Itunes)

whats wrong with downloading off itunes and then dropping it into serato etc. or simply playing it off itunes or even burning a cd? He does not even mention that.
You tube is illegal and you dont know what the track will be like. For example some idiot singing half way through?
I have done this once though as a kid was taking the xxx asking for postman pat so i embarrassed him.
The one thing i want to know is how to get good mobile internet everywhere as my blackberry is rubbish!

i dont get that at all,,
i mean if you have internet access, why not just download the track off itunes,
the quality is gonna be awful playing straight from youtube, and what if you lose your connection midway.

I have seen other DJs on Youtube who wear Jeans for EVERY function they do without fail, and that's only a minor fault compared to everything else related to legalality.
I have watched a fair few of Ellaskins's Videos, and have noticed that he will sometimes change clothes, but not all the time, but as just mentioned, there are plenty others out there doing far worse.
His music is legal and he knows what he is doing.
What on earth is he doing at the beggining when he comes back with the tub of vaseline... :eek:

Jon is a lovely bloke who goes out of his way to encourage people to enjoy DJ'ing. His videos are fun - OK, on this occasion maybe he has made a slip - but he's still on my list of "the good guys".

Yes, I have met him - only briefly - I saw him at BPM. I took the opportunity to thank him and Brian for all the stuff on DJ Tutor that helped me catch up on the technological side when I returned to DJ'ing after a seven year break. DJ Tutor is a brilliant resource and I found it before I found this board. Jon is not perfect, I don't agree with all his posts but neither is he the anti-Christ.

Because in my opinion what this guy is doing undermines all the ethical and professional standards this site promotes and also are trying to raise, let alone encouraging people to work illegally.
Apart from upsetting people like me who pay for legal music and have PLI, PAT and Pro Dub its a blatant signal from someone apparently in a position of influence over asprinig DJs thats its ok to steal music and pay nothing for it, whilst using it to make a profit.
Apart from anything else illegal he needs Pro Dub to do that if its being done at a paying gig.
If its at a private party with no fee--no problem as far as Pro Dub is concerned.
When music finally becomes free to everyone on the Internet for any use fair enough its not a problem ( as I think it will eventually )

Well, I do agree in principle, but he is not suggesting you do an entire gig using content from Youtube! It was meant to be for the odd request that you didn't have. As for the rest of his collection, and his means of playing it, well I don't know - but it's only fair to give him the benefit of the doubt.
I'm no expert, but I don't think Pro Dub even applies here - as the format does not change. As for PLI and PAT, again, you can't make accusations until you know either way.
Personally, I don't agree with what he is advocating here, but I still think people are being a bit harsh on him.

Personally, I cringe when I see his videos, but a lot of 'DJ wannabe' kids will love him. Different strokes for different folks. He has his place.

I'll second that! Theres a few people on here that watch his videos and funny enough its the same ones that come out with stupid and dangerous comments.

Just trying to get my laptop to play youtube clips through my mixer for when I haven't got a track someone with a knife asks me for.
Struggling a bit so can anyone help as I would rather avoid getting stabbed.
