Hi just a post to say thank for a corporate gig i received from the Edge as being a member of this forum. A couple of the oldies (grumpy old men) did not like it but everyone else seemed too.

Absolutely, the nail has been hit square on the head - Oooo nice mic work etc etc etc - it was 100% totally standard - but as Darren said, 'great' - have a word, I think even Toby would admit 'great' maybe too much, you know, in the same way Ferne Cotton overuses the word 'Amazing' for anything she thinks has been remotely good/amusing/interesting/...........................

I will say from running quiz nights in the past year or so my mic work has improved dramatically due to the experience running the quiz nights.

I look at my mic ability now and what it was 2 years ago and there is a difference I can tell anyway.

I agree with Darren though, All dj's should be able to use the mic in the way that Toby did.

I think quiz nights are the best way to practice & improve your mic work, because unlike discos there's no music to hide behind...it's just you & the mic!

The mic work on quiz nights is very important. Music is just there as a filler. I have a mate who had a comment off a customer because he is always having banter with the guests (In a good way of course) and the customer said "you don't need music do you?"

There are no long lists of pre-written questions in MY quiz nights.

My point is that you can get through a disco by saying virtually nothing all night, but quiz nights are the best way to practice & improve your mic skills, because with a quiz night there's no script & it's all talking, so it's all about how you use the mic & your personality.

The content of the quiz could be absolutely brilliant, but if the person "presenting" it has poor mic skills, no personality & doesn't interact well with the punters, they won't come back the following week.

No, I don't make up the questions as I go along, but there are no "long lists of pre-written questions" either. People often tell me about those kinds of quizzes, and how boring they are. Apart from that, there ARE occasions when I will change a question or one of the answer options pretty much on the spot.

I'm afraid is IS the best I can do at just after 12 midnight on my first night off for a week!

I repeat that the best & easiest way to improve your mic & presentation skills is to do pub quiz nights.

The number of questions involved in a quiz night is irrelevant...it's all about presentation, personality & connecting with the punters. Maybe that's why I've managed to keep a weekly quiz going at the same venue for 7 years.

Well its working for coop selling their store to customers so i would say its corporate? Not exactly rock and roll but its day time work so im not complaining. I had a good day. I would rather be organising a promo show for BMW or something :D

I said 'great' because as you say, its nice clear and interesting. He is fluent and confident. Yes every DJ should be able to use the mic like that but we all know that not all of them can. It was also refreshing to see somebody posting up themselves performing 'on mic' instead of watching a gig log or a clip with people dancing to loveshack or YMCA and not seeing any mic work at all. I know what alot of dj's are like on the mic, not very good. This is why i gave credit where i felt it was due.

I though edith was boring too. She seemed to brighten herself up after a while and too me it sounded a bit fake. she thought everything was amazing aswell. Maybe a bit less charismatic is what seems to last. Lets face it joe whiley has lasted a long time. It also compliments the likes of scott mills etc. who without the right production and side kicks would be VERY annoying.

Lets face it the job is not easy and the fact she is presenting to millions does not help either! :)

There are those of us who've grown so accustomed to it that it's just a case of " Wind me up and point me in the right direction" and we like to think we can produce a sensible flow of pertinent, informative and amusing speech, without having to write it down first. Done badly it's "verbal diarrhoea". :( However, it's important to remember the one and only cardinal rule:

Rather like having a 25 year old van that hasn't been serviced for 10 years and failing to turn up, blaming it on bad transport.

I dont think some actually know. i have a DJ friend who talks fast anyway, has a high pitched voice and has a rubbish mic. He also talks over the music with out lowering the volume and seems to think people can hear.

I have told him a million times that he may as well be silent but he does not notice.

I've heard a number of DJs, especially on pirate radio stations, who talk without pulling down the music. They obviously have no idea that it's almost impossible to hear what they're saying.

At the other end of the scale, I've heard plenty of DJs who reduce the music level to nil when talking which also sounds bad, although at least you can hear what they are saying.
