Just received one of 'those calls' on my mobile phone. It came up as 'private number' so I can't call it back to complain about the person and it's really frustrating to put it mildly.
You know the scenario - I get a few of these but this was out of order. The local fire brigade are doing a promotional magazine as part of the National 'Don't Drink & Drive' campaign. The guy was VERY pushy. He told me I could have a half page full colour advert in the magazine, I would be the only Disco (yeah right) and it would be £95.00 + VAT and I didn't have to pay anything until next year. I said I would need to think about it as I have just re-newed my advertising etc and have no budget left. He said "I need to know NOW mate...Look, I'll do you a full page advert in full colour for £95.00 and no VAT"... I said "Sorry, but I am off to a meeting shortly and want to think about it so I can't commit now".
His reply was this -
"Look, I'm giving you a really good deal here and I need to know NOW, not tomorrow but NOW!". I kept my cool and simply said politely.."Well, I'm sorry then but it will have to be a no then".
He then shouted at me "Well thanks for nothing pal" and slammed the phone down.
It's angered me. I get these calls every now and then but not someone as rude as this berk!

I know what you mean, although not disco related I keep getting calls from time share companies asking for a Mr Thornton who has kindly given my number as his contact BTW I have no idea who this guy is. Todays call, I explained the situation and when asked where they got my number from it came from a central database but the supervisor I spoke to did not know how to get hold of their supplier!!!!!!! I asked her what I could do about it, her reply "change YOUR number or put up with it" and slammed the phone down :Censored:

I took our listing out off Yell due to this kind of thing.
I had various sales pitches but the best one opened. 'Hi you agreed to an advert in x publication.' No I haven't I said. 'You did last week so can you give me your payment details' I hung up. Now that is forced sales not just pushy but forced.

Ridiculous - He is obviously on Piece Rate!
I would contact the Fire Station and make a complaint. More reason to record calls.

Yep you need to inform the person they may be recorded and the purpose it may be recorded for. Hence all the waffle at the start when you phone the bank.

I had exactly the same thing this time last year, he was a Liverpudlian bloke and he said "Well thanks for wasting my time" to which I replied "I think it's you that has wasted my time actually!"....He huffed and put the phone down. :D

They have nothing to do with the Fire brigade, they are just a phone sales company who just do what the piece of paper in front of them says!

its a con.
I had that a few times. NHS community magazine etc. They try and get a verbal agreement out of you and then call you back to pay.
I said it was a con and he said "yea mate its a con" in a sarcastic voice and hung up.
Just forget about it not worth the hassle.

on a similer issue, im fed up answering the phone, to find no one on the other end. This is companys computers phoning to find out if your in. Usually the phone goes again shortly afterwords and someone tries to sell me something.
It happened again last night, so i dialed 1471. It was an 0800 number so i called it back.
'Hello, this is three mobile, can i help you?'
me -'Hi, you just phoned me, im wondering what you wanted. I answered the phone but there was no one there'
three - 'em, that would be our automated system, it phones to see if someones in'
me -'have you any idea how annoying it is to be interupted for no reason?'
three -'i can imagine'
me - 'well stop bloody phoning me then'
I hung up.
Its not just Three that do this, i seem to get at least 4 silent calls a week, but most withold there number.

I did this once. I had a very shirty call so I set up a mic on my pc and told the caller than I was going to record this call and he soon changed how he was speaking to me.

Sounds like a publications scam...especially seen as no fire brigade should (and would) be producing a publication for a national drink drive campaign. All the material for DfT/Brake campaigns is produced centrally.

Absolutely, but surely if you pay by Credit Card etc, they are tracable.

That's a first. Most don't care how they're talking, nor bother about being recorded, I think.

Two pieces of advice that might help on annoying calls.
1. Is that the owner of the business phone call---no he died yesterday and we are arranging the funeral so sorry I have to go --CLUNK
2. Call that immediately cuts off--note the number and if it happens again enter into your mobile as an entry under---timewaster.
Next time you get a call showing ---timewaster--- either ignore, cut off or answer with a barrage of expletives. :D :D :D

Register with CTPS, then very calmly ask them for the name of their actual company (not whothey are calling on behalf of). Follow that up with "Have you ever heard of the Corporate Telephone Preference Service? Yes? Well this number is registered with them" Many apologes and grovelling follows and they never call again.
Of course, that won't help if it's a scammer, but.... :)

Hopefully they won't call again but if they do then I'm ready for them!!
