peavey pro 12

i'm looking at getting a pair of speakers to use for mainly karaoke and a bit of disco in smaller venes (i.e pubs etc up to capacity of about 80 people) and was wondering if these are good speakers for the job ---anybody got or used them --- i would like your opinions please..... many thanks mark

They'll do the job fine enough. I can't recommend my personal choice as a cheaper option, as they're a tad dearer.

Sadly, I find myself in total agreement with Mr Muscle here. :( :( They are without a doubt the worst handles I've ever used on speakers, and they make a small 12" cab harder to use than a huge 15" one.

I would spend the little bit extra and get those "Class D" speakers that Peter bangs on about at every given opportunity :p

However, if you are going to predominantly use them for Pub work, landlords may prefer the Peaveys, as their bar takings could be enhanced by punters' desperate to become inebriated as quickly as possible, early in the evening.

In the same way that alcohol makes ones problems insignificant and turns ugly women into babes, it can also take that edge off something that, to a sober man, would be painfully horrid to listen to.

I would go for the Pro 15s --more bass and power for not a lot more.

Easy to put up but I would avoid the Class D 1400W CD15SP Speakers---

True, but since their main purpose is Karaoke, I'd go with 12" of whatever make.

I have heard they are god awful to lift up onto a speaker stand though because of the shape and handles?

They're very very big. There's an art to getting them on the stands.

yes they got a new verison which has been out for about a year now i think. I use the older style ones and found them to be great speakers despite what some on here think.

Pros are alright wouldnt use them for anything more than 50ish people though

At pub level, possibly Matt. They're certainly not the choice of musicians much above that level. Google a few tech riders and see how many times "absolutely no peavey, mackie or behringer" is quoted, including by little known regional acts, I'm not just talking nationals/internationals.

However, fairground operators seem to like them, probably because they're cheap and fairly rugged, and the sound quality means jack when there's noisy machinery flying around in close proximity.

In their defence, Peavey possibly get the rough end of the stick because many of the people whom buy them don't understand gain structure and make them sound at their worst. Notwithstanding, you still cannot polish a turd.

The bands I have worked with lately have been on Logic Systems, Turbo Sound, Martin Audio and one using an RCF system. I aim to get our vocal system onto powered logics in next 12 months.

UL's are quite common with Artistes, and also quite acceptable. The same cannot be said of PRO series.

Yes 12's are fine for pub work and Peavey are okay as a cabinet but my experience of some Hysis XT's was they throw diaphrams quite readilly.

Not sure about the PRO's but I have seen many folk lighting up the protection bulb on other Peavey series from over driving followed by smoke without the mirrors or any water to put it on.

thanks for all your opinions --- but had a total change of heart at the last minute and bought a set of studiomaster vsx 15's ----------- should be here on monday ---- too late i know but has anyone got nightmare experience of these --- asked a local dj who uses them and he cant praise them highly enough

The Studiomasters are 2db more efficient at 100db/1w/1m compared to 98db for the Peaveys
The Studiomasters are on NL4, the Peaveys are on TS jacks

its all down to personal preference - when i blew my 1st set of speakers up i tried several differnet makes of speakes makies, Studiomasters, Class D's and several more makes taht were in teh shop, but at the time the peavey XT range gave me the sound i wanted even when everything is flat out.

I did try the Pro range but thought they were aweful.

on upgrade time last year I once again tested all that was in teh shops but again plumbed for peaveyy the UL range this time and once again flat out is not an issue.

The Pro 15s are not ideal for blasting rock music--but they are ok for a bit of low power general Disco--personally im moving on to the UL15s:D

Worth mentioning that the peaveys come with a 5 year warantee as well. And I think you will find the peaveys come with standard speakon and jack connectors on the back.
