£70 Sid hits North Wales

Yes I am aware of PLI and PAT, but they are spread over many jobs. If he did one £70 job a week his PAT and PLI would be somewhere around £1.92 a job. and for such a small job - 15 minutes up and 15 down. Okay sorry he is making £18.00 an hour ish.

I must remind myself to have a chat with the boss tomorrow about paying me for my commuting time! So as other jobs don't pay that then we will leave that one out of the equation.

I know kit cost, music, PRODUB, etc, etc. I wouldn't bother either.

Just doing Devils Advocate, calm down. I wouldn't do it as it wouldn't be worth the effort, but £18.00 an hour is better than most jobs out there.

Am I missing something here, but I buy my PAT and PLI on an annual basis, not per event, so if he's already bought PLI and PAT then it's a fixed cost and not something you can put an hourly figure on, I mean you've paid it regardless of how many events you do or don't do, and in that respect it's totally removed from travel time, fuel etc.

Added to which, if he sits in watching Strictly or whatever, he gets £0.00 in his pocket. If he goes out five minutes down the road, for say four hours, he gets £70 minus £2 diesel. £17 per hour. Better than my day job usually.

If that's how you see it then I wont argue with you

However, I don't see it as more £70 bookings per se. I see it as more opportunities, when they ring I'd quote them my usual rate, they've already seen what I can bring and do to a kids party so there's a possibility that they may book me at full rate. If they don't then it gives me the choice of either sitting in and earning nothing or getting paid and picking up some more experience. Quite a lot of my costs are fixed (PAT,PLI, CD's, Equipment etc etc) and this is my first year, so it makes sense to me to recover them at every chance

I used to work in a supermarket part-time when I was in college, and there were a LOT o people who used to come in 15 minutes before closing and stand around waiting for the announcement that X and Y were now going at half price.

There are different types of DJs and different markets. I often feel that quite a few forum members charge £500 per an event, and not everyone would pay that for a children's party.

A little bit off topic, but they were talking about kids prom's on the radio this morning (Heart FM for the South West) and had a few people calling in about the costs. Apparently a bunch of kids have set up a group opposing prom's on the basis that they discriminate against the kids who don't come from well off families who can't afford to pay out £500 for a Prom dress and the same again for a limo!

I bet the DJ at most of these prom events doesn't see that kind of money though (and I bet the school's are still charging < £10 per ticket in the majority of cases). Personally, I oppose these types of events (or at least this type of extravagance on the part of the parents) on the basis that sums of money like that could be much better spent elsewhere than on a single social date in the school calendar.

It amazes me that school Parents Associations struggle for membership, yet parents are obviously willing to invest huge amounts of time and money on their children when it directly benefits their child (and/or their own social status).

Back OT, personally I'd prefer to stay at home rather than go out for £70, even if only for a couple of hours at a local venue because it'll still be 4hrs of my time, and personally I value my time more highly than that (and a teenage party is going to need a reasonable rig and current tracks because that age group are into their chart music).

Whilst my headline rate for a 2hr kids party is £125 I can't remember the last one that didn't add either another hour (or two), karaoke or bubble machine or some other 'extra'. Generally mine go out at £180-250 and about 40% of my total gigs are for kids in the age group 9-14.

Looking back through this year's books and the cheapest kids disco I've done is £140 and the dearest £320. The vast majority have been on Friday or Thursday nights - just two Saturdays this year, both in winter.

Take from that what you will :o

Yes I do have philosophies on business, I think it's better to be out earning and being seen then it is to be sat at home watching TV. If doing a one-off cheap disco at the last minute generates some enquries for me then I'll negotiate as good a fee as I can.

When I bought my first house in the early 80's I needed a joiner, I managed to find one who was quiet on the work front and negotiated a very cheap rate. His quality of work was excellent and I've used him ever since, although not at the same rates I originally got. In addition I've recommended him to family and friends. So I'd say that from one cheap job he's had a lot of full price jobs that he wouldn't have got if we'd never met.

So I work 9-5.30 all week, including saturdays, out friday for £70, work saturday, gig saturday night at £140 average, and count the friday as a bonus?????, ask me sunday morning when i'm knackered if friday was worth it, lets face it if £70 is what they want to pay i won't be getting big earners in the future from them will i, like my £*00 nye gig.......

Just type the word sofa with : before it and : after it as well (no space).

certainly not a lot but then again if ya sat at home not booked out - may be worth it as a one off to see if u can get any full priced bookings from other parents :):)

The problem with taking one at £70 in the hope that you will get full price ones from other parents, is that you are assuming that the parents don't speak to one another! Further enquiries will expect the £70 figure to be quoted to them too!

(PS It certainly wouldn't cover our overheads for a gig!)
