Getting on a bit now :bang:
Whilst I know that some on the forum are already past pension age I begin to ponder what lies ahead.Do the younger members have an ultimate goal...are they looking to being in their sixties and still churning out tunes at weddings and birthdays.
You really face the most difficult times.
The music collection us older ones have spent years compiling(the backbone to any Disco) is now transferable form hard drive to hard drive in an hour.
The Pubs(the venues that are the backbone to what we do....a lot of us anyway)are closing down wholesale and the ones that aren't are alienating thier smoking customers.
The Beer whilst it don't taste quite the same from a can is now available at ridiculously low discount prices from the Supermarkets(I know this is is due to change...but is that going to send then flocking back to licensed premises).
Without being too depressing aren't the odds stacked against you....What are you going to be doing in the Entertainment Business when you are 60.:confused:

The sad thing is they don't NEED us to provide it for them anymore.

When I'm 60 I'll be travelling the world & taking it easy, having retired from the entertainment industry nearly a decade earlier!

They're not really my market.
So much so that when a local pub phoned me up recently to offer me a weekly residency every FRIDAY I turned it down & passed it straight onto a colleague!

I know where he's coming from. ;) We had this in another thread quite recently. About punters having as much music as us, and not being up for Discos like they used to be.

I'm not sure I believe that is the case.
Surely punters will only download songs they LIKE (regardless of where they get them from), whereas we have to have loads of songs including plenty we DON'T like for our business.
In other words, my ipod contains nearly 10,000 songs...but I wonder how many songs the average NON-DJ has on their ipod? I'm guessing it will be nowhere near 10,000!

A lot of the DJ's on Radio Sheffield (My local BBC) were former Mobile DJ'S but the word is that they don't earn as much as some of the top-earners on here(claim to) earn.So that is not a goal anymore.
What they going to do.....wise old Excalibur??:bang:

There is a genuine truth in the initial post, no doubt about it - although, with all due respect Martin, I think you're being over pessimistic!
There's a charming (older) lady I work with who was at a wedding recently, and she told me that she couldn't see who was playing the music, until eventually she noticed the DJ sitting in the corner on his laptop. She asked me if that was how it was done now, and I said yes, unfortunately, in a lot of cases it is. She also told me about how she commented to her husband at the time, about how he could do that. Oh, she also said the music was good, everyone had a good time and she didn't think there was any disco lighting (she couldn't really remember).
Anyway, I should point out that this type of thing is only going to impact on the lower price range end of the market :)

Most of them are of little use, as they won't get played, but it's our JOB to have a decent number of songs (about 10,000 sounds pretty good to me) in CASE they are requested.
It's completely impractical to only carry something like 500 songs just because we don't often play any other songs apart from those 500.

When i'm 60....I aim to have bought a bar outright in say Spain.Specialising in 70's music provided by me...and staffed by the locals.The customers would know what they are getting because that is how it would be marketed...70's only!!

TBH i really do think that this thread is a waste of time. Do you know how peoples needs/expectations/wants are going to change in the future? Nope?...me neither.
I once got told that a surfer cant do his thing on a calm ocean.....
(I'll break it down, you paddle like mad just to keep it going, then when you see your next big swell, you can plan how to tackle it. Quite fitting i think, as we dont know what the future holds, so getting back to my original post...adapt as it happens.)

At the moment I work for others, as the last time I attempted to go full time, I made a lot of bad decisions on the business level. Anyhow, I am planning another attempt in the near future, whereby I will not be competing with the type of DJ I mentioned in my last post :)

:shrug:That wasn't the point I was making. There are a lot of top DJs who use a laptop as part of their playout setup, most likely a lot more than DJs who use an Ipod as part of their playout.

I'm guessing you see yourself fronting some sort of Entertainment Agency using your IT skills and Equipment knowledge and contacts.Occassionally turning out yourself to cover sickness etc...
My ambition is much smaller....Small bar in Benidorm say(cos I can't spell Torremel....whatever)...Beach Bum by day and a guest spot in my own bar at night.The Brits may come to listen to Bowie Mercury Stewart and I may parody myself as a dated 70's DJ....which I don't currently do delibrately....although I have the impression that is how you view me(part of me understands why....maybe a change of Avatar for me).

I'm pretty sure everyday all of us have a little glance at the future...As you get older you tend to do it more...
There were a number of issues bouught up in the OP...We have had a good chat about one (music) and I accept the other topics have been done to death on here....However they will affect the younger members on here now and in the future...
This is my problem ...In twenty years time I can't see there being many DJ'S:bang: ...but I also can't see there being none:) and in twenty years time some of the pro-active posters on this thread are still going to be a lot younger than me!!

I have always planned to semi retire at 30, I am aiming to build the business up to the extent that I can employ a manager to run the agency and dance floor / venue lighting and starcloth side of the business for me as well as to run my PAT testing business.
This will give me a residual income and allow me to do as I please day to day be that start another business or spend my life abroad!

I have no idea what will happen in the future, but it does make good business sense to at least be thinking about what may or may not happen and have contingencies in place. Pro-active is much better than reactive.

Sorry to burst your bubble Rob, but I had more tracks than that in my personal collection before I started DJing. (mostly vinyl, some CDs & certainly before downloads)

My age and the show I present is certainly no Tea dance---:eek:
Thats for old fogies--I entertain anyone from 8 to 80 who wants a high energy entertaining evening, the average audience is probably around 40yrs old.

No offence, just suggesting you DONT have to finish up in the twilight ( in my case darkness ) years of your career to put it nicely---
at a very slow pace---after all---its not you thats dancing!!!!
