Just a thought.....

If the media is to be believed CDs & Vinyl will soon have had their days & people will get all their music via download. What then will happen with disco equipment hire companies? Will they hire out laptops that the customer would then have to fill up with their own music, or would they hire out ready loaded machines?

What would be the the copyright implications of this?

One for the LWP I think! :teeth:

They couldn't hire out pre-loaded machines as the licences need to be in individual names.

It would really screw up the hire industry then wouldn't it, more work for the DJs :teeth:

I've got an external HDD with all my music on. So could I therefore hire a rig, with laptop and use the music stored on my HDD?

Providing you had a licence, I would assume so.

It's not really going to be a senario for a good few years yet, but thought provoking isn't it?

they've been saying "vinyl is dead" since cd's were introduced, but my brother (a club dj) is still using only vinyl.

My Gran (78 bless her) still buys cd's and listens to them on a regular basis, but i just can not picture her sat at a PC downloading tunes, and when i pop in for a cuppa, her discussing which download site is the best :teeth:

Depending which source you believe, vinyl sales are increasing 30% year on year or 500% in the last 5 years compounded.

Coooool!

I 've actually seen somebody on another directory doing dry hires with a loaded laptop. I'm sure there must be some copyright issues here!

wont be long before most venues are wifi, then you can download music as and when needed ( for requests), even play wedding background music remotely from the comfort of your arm chair.
Maybe even have your music safe at home and connect direct to it from the venue, who knows?
The times they are a changing.

Been there, done that :-)

Have a 3G card in my backup backup laptop so grabbed a copy of 'especially for you' when the 80's night I was booked for turned out to be a secret wedding reception and they wanted Kylie & Jason for the first dance..... :bang:

Used on a couple of other occasions too.... well handy.

WiFi's better though from a download speed PoV but probably less secure.

Broadband will be totally free before long from most of the leading suppliers, some already are as its an add on to tv/telephone services.

sorry, i ment that it would be expensive to by all the tracks. yes i know each track is about 70p or somthing but what happens if you end up downloading lets say 15 tracks. At 70p each thats £10.50. Now lets say you have to do this a few nights a week for example, the money in the bank wil soon go down.

A running cost, i normally buy music each week anyway so don't see a difference.

Agree if you're still building up your library it can get expensive. Luckily I've 25 years worth of collection to fall back on so it's rare I need to download anything - in fact, it's usually when folks ask for a specific mix of a tune rather than the tune itself.

i still prefer to buy my cd's as i get to have a cd and not just a single track burned on a cd-r. plus cd's are getting cheaper now anyway.

i think im going off topic. :(

Hi Steve my company has sought of got round the digital hire question. i hire a iDj2 from Numark with a pair of active speakers customer just pops in there ipod simple little system but it works a treat.

Ditto. My 'DIY' option provides everything right up to the jack plug and the T's & C's clearly define responsibility for correct licencing.

It is a solution, but not a universal one. I don't see it as proper DJing, I wouldn't hire a system like that, and I can't think of anyone else I know that would.

Thats no where near the amount we have either, there used to be thousands on show in the store, hardware used to be only upstairs, all of the groundfloor was stacked floor to ceiling of vinyl! It'll still certainly be with us for a while.

With touch sensative screens available now. I feel that venues will have Hard drives full of music some with Karaoke and DVD abilities for people to choose there own music or style of night and have complete control over the night. All the venue has to do is have the PA & Lighting inbuilt near a dance floor area. The touch sensitive screen will allow the B & G to choose the music of they re choice also let there guests choose from a certain set of tunes on the night???

Also with the use of WiFi widely available in Canada already tunes can already be downloaded if the collection is not upto spec. Its already widely used in several clubs in Canada with great success (I dont exactly know the names of the clubs)

Sorry but your wrong as a hire tool for people who want to do there own discos it is a simple solution these are not pro djs just people who are having a party and don"t or can not afford a mobile, as a hire company we know what makes money and this is a very popular system if you were conversant with this neat little desk you would see you,in fact can plug any type of storage device laptop, hard drive mp3 player and most people have one of these items rather than 1000s of cds in fact i see no difference in this than many of the systems that djs use now.By the way i did production for Sash last month not a pioneer or a cd in site all digital , and he certainly does proper Djing.

I'm not wrong at all, you didn't state your target market initially. Using ipods for DJing with is hardly the most professional method - the device you are talking about is obviously aimed at the home DJ, and as you say it is quite suitable for 'DIY discos', for want of a better phrase.

If you are comparing this system to digital setups such as the Cortex, Numark and Denon HDD controllers, or even purpose built laptops, then it is not going to stand up to them in competition, is it?

I have nothing agains't digital DJing, it is the future, and it's here now. I don't doubt there are many pro DJs, including the famous ones, who use digital solutions now. However, if you are talking about the German Sash! (Encore Une Fois, Ecuador...) - I've never heard of them DJing live? I thought they were just studio producers.

Im stupid just a slip when typing i meant to say Sasha . I think you are getting mixed up with the iDj2 and the mickey mouse ipod controller the one i mention is a pro hard ware controller and will set you back nearly £500 yes you can put a ipod in to it but you can also use it with a laptop or any mass storage device like a hard drive also has mixer with full eq and facilities to plug lots of things in to it it is a much better bit of kit than say the cortex which was primary designed for the USA domestic market. Back to to topic i love vinyl as its the bedrock of our industry and up to a few years a go all of our DJS who play on every continent in the world used to lug there vinyl now due to airport security this is more difficult hence the switch to digital systems like final scratch or serrato i noticed Sasha was using appellton and his own custom made mixer and computer. My son Tim Lyall ( slinky ) still uses vinyl or cds if appearing in the UK and i hope and pray there will always be a place for vinyl as its so tactile.:)

the main reasons that records are starting to dwindle i know there are more formats that music can be played on but in say 8 to 10 years there might be no records because the companys that press the vinal have out dated equipment and carnt get parts to fix the equipment

Unless you have Technics 1210s where every part is replaceable and still in manufacter. They have been around sine the 70's and still think they will be around in 20 years time

The actual point of this thread was regarding people hiring out loaded PC/HDD combinations not whether vinyl has had it's day.

What I would have to ask is... who is likely to hire a playout system? I mean, I know a lot of DJs who have the best of gear in their bedrooms (Pioneer/Technics/Vestax etc), but don't have a PA system or lighting, as are into club orientated music, and wouldn't DJ at a birthday party or wedding, for example. So, they may hire PA and lighting if they were DJing a self-organised event or something.

I can't think of an instance where a DJ would hire a playout system, but nothing else. In any case, I would imagine they would have their own CD or vinyl collection even of they didn't have any decks.

Not everyone with a big music collection is a DJ & not everyone who wants to be a DJ has a music collection.

My point was not whether there is a market for hire of disco equipment (there is & there are plenty of disco hire shops to prove it), but once (if the media is to be believed) CDs & Vinyl have been superseded by MP3s etc what will these hire shops hire out & will they include music (as the person I mentioned in post #11 is already doing) ?
