Once a year I get to pretend I'm a real DJ.

I have done Victorias party for the past 5 years....she is 9 soon.Her Dad is the Sound and Lighting engineer for Escapade the biggest nightclub in Barnsley ....so she gets her party there.

It is big....very big(anyone help me with a link....please??)...I get to borrow their gear which ain't that much different to mine....mechanics wise.

I always have a chat with her Dad.The reason for my post is this....and its bemused me all year.

Her Dad talks in telephone numbers about what they take say in a Saturday night.I ask him what they dosh the DJ'S for entertaining those sort of audiences expecting it to be 700 or 800 quid....but it ain't very much more than what I would expect to earn for a Saturday!!

Anyone care to put a handle on this??Are you a visiting Laptop DJ to a similair venue to this.Don't want to dump Victorias Dad in it....it was just a bit of banter...and I haven't been specific..

I think he's asking why clubs pay so little....Possibly because Club-only DJs don't have alot of the costs that Mobile guys have, so can afford to be cheaper? Possibly because there's less work involved in carrying three cases of CDs into a venue, than there is setting up an entire rig? Possibly because there are hoards of wannabes desperate to get out and spin the music they like themselves in clubs? Maybe because there's less skill in playing to a crowd that have come with the intention of dancing than there is in playing at a Wedding?

On a more serious note, the good thing about Northern clubs is people go out for a good time, there's more fun than attitude and this is reflected in the music. IMHO.

Here comes the old saying - round here you would find it hard to get those prices. Tiger Tiger and Blu Bambu in Newcastle are, as far as I am aware, 2 of the best paying clubs and if I recall when I played there I am sure the pay was around £250

Just compare the overheads for a mobile DJ and a resident club DJ. Apart from the equipment side, a mobile also has the business expenses that a resident club DJ is unlikely to have. Then look at the time spent: very little time spent with clients if your client is the same week in, week out, no set up/de-rigging..... I coud go on!

Escapade pays £195 a night based on 11pm until 3am.

Now from past experience in Escapade in Chesterfield the setup was Pioneer CDJ1000 MK3 and a Allen & Heath Zone 62 mixer with a input panel installed next to the mixer for Serato and laptop use.

Well I remember a small little club that I used to frequent in my youth and there were 2 DJs who took turns during the evening (10pm-2am). They each received £35 and moaned like hell about the poor pay..... that was 27+ years ago

Erm--there was one--forget his name.

He didnt quite connect and seemed to have a completely different point of view to Mobile DJs---as he would (no brainer) on most topics.

I was a club DJ for three years mixing trance and hard house and other commercial dance.

The difference being I took the journey man route from pub to function to club and back again to function. I just like playing music and entertaining people. I think some of those who come from bedroom to club miss the connection with people along the way and think they are just too kool for skool.

Depends what you call club DJ. There is a nightclub under the MacDonald Kilhey Court Hotel in Standish. They use it for weddings and done a few in there this year. Okay thats a rather tenuous attempt at claiming being a club DJ these days.

In the early to mid 90's I did a bit of work at a club in Slough.

Hours were about 9pm until 2am, pay was £80 & at the time I thought that was good.

Why? Because as already mentioned by several people it was far easier & involved much less time than a mobile disco.

In other words, there was no paperwork to do (apart from the invoice), no client to meet or liase with and no advance requests to prepare. In addition, it took 1 minute to load the van rather than 15 or 20 minutes (just a couple of boxes of CDs) and on arrival at the venue it took a maximum of 5 minutes to "set up" as opposed to the hour or so for a mobile.

Therefore, the total time taken on each of these nights was at least 3-4 hours less than a mobile, which was why I thought the £80 was good pay.

I cover one club occasionally for £175. Walk in job...all i need to do is plug in my lappy to their install SSL box and do 4 hours work. So im comparison to the mobile work its very little effort...but the pay isnt as great. :)

I was resident in a few clubs over the past 20 years and more recent at the Frontier club in Batley before leaving last year, the pay is not great at around £65 per night but after taking off your expenses - CDs, vinyl, etc its not a lot . The problem with club work is that you soon get fed up of been in the same place every weekend, seeing the same old faces, I actually turn club work down now as I enjoy been back on the mobiles and building the business.

Club DJs supposedly have to beatmatch, where Wedding DJs don't; Then again, like you said, the people who go there actually want to Dance. :)
