View Full Version : How much are you really worth?

Mark Wild

I tend to see my prices as middle of the road, yet when I give a price to certain potential clients, I can tell by their reaction it is WAY too expensive for them. Although maybe that's not a bad thing, it makes me wonder wtf they want for the poundage they have. I don't know anything about dry hire but was intrigued to work out how much the equipment I use for say an average wedding would cost on it's own. The results only wanted to make me put my prices up higher !

Speakers £45
1 Sub £25
Mixer £10
Wireless Mic £18
Deckstand £10
Moonflowers x 2 £25
Scanners x 4 £50
LED Par Cans x 4 £30
DJ Equipment (playout) £50

Total: £263

Now I know for a fact there are guys in my area knocking out weddings for £150, I don't know what equipment some of these guys take out but surely they're worth more than £150 even on dry hire ! I know MDD and its members have a massive passion for making this industry as well respected as it should be. But to the guys going out sub £150 or even £200 for a wedding you're really letting the side down. What would the dry hire price of your average wedding setup be? Doesn't it make you think?

It's certainly another way to look at it! I've never even thought about hiring out equipment, possibly never will - but wouldn't there be a discount to hire a complete package?

On account of pricing, everyone seems to expect a disco for about £150 - but charging that for a full scale wedding setup is ridiculously cheap.

We quote £200 for wedding disco only.

For that its

2 X OHM RW3
1 X Crown XLS 602 Amp (with reserve in place)
Playout is Denon DNX900 and DND4000
Mics are Kam radio Mics (Sennshiesers are for vocal work only)
A rather expensive Powerdrive lighting rigging.
4 Martin MX4's
2 Chaos NJD 2
1 Acme Gobo Projector
1 Abstract Monster Moon.

Reserve stuff is in the trailer just in case.

I am not too worried about what it dry hires at as that is not my competition.

How much am I really worth?

A lot more than I charge, but that's because I've always been more interested in providing excellent value for money rather than charging as much as I can get away with.

I have no idea about dry hire charges as it's not something I'm involved in.

My wedding clients pay £375 - £425. This represents excellent value considering my extensive experience & high levels of customer service.

Well if that's how much you think you're worth, fair play & good luck to you ;)

We have been going again for 2 and half years ish so its adequate at the moment. We are achieving that with no web site and no marketing costs, so I am comfortable.

What I didn't add is they are are now regularly being upsold to £450 for disco and two 45 minute vocal sets (as the vocal kit is rack cased and with us anyway its no extra work). Plus I have 2 £800 weddings booked in for next year, which involves us being around for the wedding breakfast too for a swing vocal set.

We are getting there slowly. We took this years new years eve booking in April for £650 and had to turn down two £900's because we were booked. I will book 2010's new year in this Jan for £900, so thats one less thing to worry about next year.

My upselling options are starting to increase as the popularity increases. Its a supply and demand thing and we are now getting the demand to the stage where we can start to charge more.

However, I would rather have the rig making £200 than nothing as its all going towards the upgrades which will allow us to eventually do large 500 capacity black tie events and charge £1,000 plus a job.

It helps having a vocal artist as you can get the in off the £200 disco and then sell on. Doesn't always work, but more and more are starting to drop bands and seperate artist and DJ as they like the single point of contact service we provide without agency mark up.

Sorry thats so long, but just outlining where I am trying to get to.

Tesco started as a low rent pile it high retailer with a D/C demographic. They now have more money than the banks.

For the record I also know where you are coming from, but I choose to get into the bun fight with the £200 chaps for the right reasons.

The general public have no idea how much money it costs to put a decent rig together and neither do the wedding venue hotels, which is why they drive the prices lower by trying to improve their cut through retained DJ's or the cheapest agency they can find.

I know what next. Before you know it I will be drinking Yorkshire tea as its the best tea!

Aaaargghhhhh - Whats that I see before me. Yorkshire tea.

I know its a load of toss that it costs more to hire the kit than for us to drive it to the venue, set it up and then run it for them using our paid for music.

However, I hope we are just passing through that bracket. We were £150 18 months ago just to ensure we won jobs to pay for better gear.

I've made no mention of my equipment, as that's not what I sell to the customers.

Even if I had top of the range Pioneer & Denon stuff, my prices would probably be the same as they are now.

There are plenty of threads about people having good gigs and good feedback etc.

The reason things come back to money, is that for some of us, this is a business and money becomes very important when you depend on it to live on!

I've just had a lucky break and earnt a notional £25,000 by purchasing a house from an Auction and restoring it.

I thought you now lived in this house, so how did you make 25K?

Take the pressure of yourself....Then you might start enjoying DJing cos you want to do it....INSTEAD OF COS YOU HAVE TO DO IT:bang:Is there something wrong with making a living off something you enjoy then?

our posts suggest that you can't be bus if you charge more, and if you make a decent profit (ie a living) from DJing, then you can't be enjoying it

Wh do you seem to believe that these concepts are mutually exclusive?

Also, going back to the original topic of this thread, I believe that the OP was trying to get across that, if a 'dry hire' of a rig in your area costs £150, and you charge £200 a night, then what you are charging for your expertise, time and skill is, in fact £50. If you are charging £150, then you might as well advertise "Hire kit - DJ comes free!"

But that doesn't mean you made an actual profit though....

My house is worth more than when I bought it 12 years ago, its has no impact on how much I enjoy DJing, or indeed on how much I charge!!

I had two boiled eggs and some brown toast for my breakfast.

Apologies did a wander off thread there..

Just a bit ;)

Is £200 letting the side down.

IMO yes, but I feel I'm worth more, hence the reason I charge more :D

The short answer to the original OP for me is we are worth more than we charge, but I do have a plan to increase both what we are worth and how much we charge.

We have been going again for 2 and half years ish ....

What I didn't add is they are are now regularly being upsold to £450 for disco and two 45 minute vocal sets (as the vocal kit is rack cased and with us anyway its no extra work).

My upselling options are starting to increase as the popularity increases. Its a supply and demand thing and we are now getting the demand to the stage where we can start to charge more.

It helps having a vocal artist as you can get the in off the £200 disco and then sell on. Doesn't always work, but more and more are starting to drop bands and seperate artist and DJ as they like the single point of contact service we provide without agency mark up.

I must have been doing the vocals+disco package 2 years longer than you guys, and was charging similiar price as you guys 2 years ago - so seems about right to me

However, perhaps it's because its the two of you, but your approach is entirely the opposite of mine. I market myself as a singer first, with the disco being the add on.

Evenso, the single point of contact/saving if booking together is also a strong USP for me too.

Ways to skin a cat, I suppose.

I tend to sell to people looking for a vocalist who then go "ooh... i can also add a disco"... myself I feel that having an add on (ie the live show) that is more expensive than the basic package is going to be an uphill struggle. Too many times this year I went out doing a cheaper disco only show and turning down easier better paid work because of that.

But it's obviously working for you.... so not a criticism.

As an aside, the sooner you get a website up and some quality demos on it, the better IMO. Once my demos were online, I had people asking to book in their initial emails. (Albeit rarely!)

Searches for thread with somebody saying "Money Rocks".

Wrong Geezer??

Yes...I said money rocks, but that's not the same as getting every penny I can out of clients.

:D

[EQUIPMENT LISTED]

about the right amount for most functions, although I would have a pair of Subs, it's always useful if the amplifier in one breaks down or whatnot.
