Partnering up with other DJ's

I thought it was such good response from by DJ Jules I took liberty in starting a new post.

I got into the discussion today about "how many DJ's is too many" in my local shop and I think we agreed that four, each with their own laptop/deck are too many, one is never enough and 2-3 is about right :D Mostly in jest I'll add, but personally I like partnering with other DJ's - you tend to bounce ideas off each other and fight to see who can bring in the next track first, and can you imagine trying to share a laptop or a pair of CDJ's between two of you?

Ive not partnered up with a fellow Dj apart from when i used to Mc and Dj D&B nights in derby, as for Partnering up for discos etc nope never but id love to as im so much away from everyone on here and by that i dont mean distance wise i mean setup etc, as ive seen majority of members use cdj's etc etc but the bedroom dj me (thats how i think i am compared to the rest) it would be a laughing stock if someone from here came with me as it would be like managing Cheeko or John & Edward as Opera singers lol

I joined up with another DJ for my first 9 years in the business, as we initially ran the disco together.

There were many advantages. We only had half the gear each in our houses, we split all our expenses, there were two of us to set up the gear - so it was easy & fast, we did half the evening each - so that meant less work & less responsibility and we both had someone to talk to.

The only disadvantage was having to split the money when we got paid.

Having worked on my own for the last 16 years, there's no way I'd want it any other way now, as I'm quite used to things being as they are.

That said i had the pleasure of seeing 3 top djs (Ben Leung, Ben Stevens and Amber D'Amour) playing a tech set together this weekend, all using their own playout system with Traktor and midi maping and it really did work.

Piccy to prove it ;) - PS cable police....it aint mine :D

on my own generally. i djed with a few people but apart from club nights i cant perform as well?

I think it has to be a certain person that you bond with personally and musically?

It depends on the situation. I enjoy teaming up with someone it can create a special energy but on the other hand I don't enjoy big dj teams like the one pictured above.

For me as a punter there's too much going on and I've never experienced it actually adding anything to the performance with the possible exception of an X - Press 2 gig about 4 or 5 years ago. I find there's too many loops and effects and not enough music!

I love 2manyDJ's but who doesn't?...

I don't think I could cope with all that midi-maping and I would definately be there tidying the wires up!!:bang: :bang:

But horses for courses ....if you like that sort of thing;)

I've teamed up with other DJs on several occasions.

The most notable one was when myself and a fellow DJ got together and did a Blues Brothers tribute act for charity. We raised about £2,000 for Cancer Research UK & Macmillan Nurses and had a great deal of fun in the process.

In fact, I'm hoping to resurrect and update that show in the near future ;)

Back at the beginning of the year I did a 7 hour Skool disco with another local DJ, we just used the one play-out system taking it in turns to entertain the crowd doing about 45 minutes at a time. The promoter was so happy with how we worked together looks like it could become an annual booking

Look you took in the right spirit...and thats big of you.Incidentally my Dad took the same attitude when I went to watch Rod S,David B,Freddie M, cos he was comparing them with Frank Sinatra....Dean Martin etc.

Welll....im quite broad minded. I had a bit of Maiden on in the car on the way back ;) I can go from a rock concert to a dance festival with no sleep (and have done before now ).

When roadying for other DJ's I've been known to add a bit of cheery banter over the mic ( until they find the kill button. :( :( )

The Neil and Kev Roadshow has two of us. Myself and my friend Kev (its in the name)

He sings so that adds a dimension, but we have also DJ'd together for 12 years on and off. It is a paid night out for us and allows me to have my big toy, which is the rig. Wouldn't want to work on my own as it just wouldn't be the same.

Yeah quite a bit younger than me, he does a lot of uni gigs around the country and so roughly the same age group as at the Skool party and so although a 70's / 80's night (my genres) he was playing stuff I hadn't thought of and we spent most of the evening bouncing ideas off of each other.
