Think its a dig at me again, as I made the 'happy clappy' comment in a post saying I wouldn't do a midweek event for under 5's for £200 - I wouldn't because I don't do under 5's - it's been taken a little bit literally ...... again :cool:

There was a discussion in a previous thread that worked its way round to money......

This was proving a problem and Elite was trying to keep the thread on topic....

I took a statement from one of the members and tried to make a prudent thread from it.The poster intimated that he would not work for £200 an hour in a happy clappy atmosphere.....I said I would...and was canvassing opinion.

This site is fantastic for all the information you can glean,all the experiences you can share,all the tips you can pick up.... and i've conferred with some fantastic people in private messages.

Technically some of you are really adept but maybe get a little confused when you are posting what you are truly earning.....

Your DJ's proffessional website was a real eye opener for me....probably one of the few sites that actually put a cash value on what he does....£175 in the January sale.Looking at his site he is an astute individual....not the type to be working for peanuts.

So I have spent the last four months feeling that I am the poor cousin on the site when in fact my rate is similair to someone who deserves respect...

The trouble I have allaying all this is that there is someone in a similair employ who woudldn't turn out for £200 AN HOUR....


Now he must be very very good (we've seen the clip of when you first joined) or I have misinterpreted whats been said.:confused:

1 hour setting up and 1 hour breaking down
1 hour travel there and back
1 hour preparation, loading, checking gear
1 hour paperwork and phone calls

I make that 6 hours.

Then, you take away any expenses, petrol, CDs or music, prizes etc

Then if you were running it properly, you would be factoring in accountancy expenses, use of home as office, dry cleaning, equipment purchases etc etc etc

Oh, and of course 20% for tax and NI.

So, £200 divided by 6 = £33.33 an hour, minus expenses, tax and NI.

Many (including myself) don't charge per hour. My base price is for up to 4 hours entertainment, so the price would be the same whether they wanted a one hour or a four hour disco.

My gear(it is mine) is resident at a Club....No set up or take down.....No paperwork as no contracts (mentioned in an earlier thread) .....no travel its in the next street.....10 minuites plugging in dreaded laptop(see other thread) and switching the power on....and Robert is your Sisters Brother.

Maybe not a loss, but if all my gigs were £200 and I had every weekend booked (leaving two out for holiday, and to make the sums easier :D) using a rough fixed cost analysis I did yesterday (so I'd need to add in fuel costs to this really), that would net me £11,444 before tax, I'm sure I could earn more working in a supermarket, or MacDonalds!

Just seen your post above and I appreciate you have low oveheads, but not everyone does, hence why we all charge different prices - it seems you're the only one who seems to keep taking issue with this?

I think the main thing here is that someone doesn't want to do a job for £200.00 an hour and someone else would jump at the chance.

It's been said that the booking in question is for Under 5's and that it doesn't appeal to the person in question and that's fair play. Would it be the same outcome if the price was double that and £400.00? My guess is that Yes, it would because it's a booking that the person in question (SimonP) does not want to do. I would be the same to be honest. If someone was offering me £200.00 to go and entertain a few kids for an hour midweek, I would turn it down personally. Mind you, I would possibly say to my other DJ (who would probably do it) that it's a job for them for £100.00 and they would more than likely jump at the chance.

Horses for courses etc etc springs to mind. If someone offered me £500.00 for an hour to do something I wasn't comfortable with, I would turn it down no sweat at all. Yes, it may be a good payday but if I am not confident or comfortable then there is a danger that I would be rubbish and that could damage my reputation and future bookings etc.

My partner and I have an affinity with whoever we work for.....it comes as part of the fee.I have done a one year olds christening and a function for a person who was a hundred.Jackie in particular has an affinity with all children....especially the under 5's....and childrens entertainers are missing some of their market if they say they are not going to do them.

Business is business. Gross profit minus expenses is net profit. Expenses are the same for everyone in the industry. Are you factoring depreciation on your gear? Tax and NI? Using your home as an office?

THere are so many reasons why that £200 is not clear profit or an hours work and that has nothing to do with you doing things differently. It is basic business common sense. Basic profit and loss.

Also in an earlier post (that I can't be bothered to go back and find) you brought up the fact I had to be good etc etc and then went on about the video someone else posted on here when I joined the forum, implying I wasn't any good - without wishing to bring all that back to fore, I said the video in question bears no relation to what I do as a DJ, so really no reason to go there.

Quite simply - I wouldn't take the £200 midweek job, you of course would, no issue, enough said.
