My DJ Name

A little off topic I realise (but it is a mobile Disco gig - not a walk up), but I've been asked to DJ at an event which is going to be heavily advertised and people are going to be charged entrance to get in. To cut a long story short, the promoter for the evening wants to know what the DJ's name is so they can post them around (not that it's going to mean anything to anyone obviously - but I guess putting a name on the posters changes the public's perception of the event).

So... I need a DJ Name. DJ Jules doesn't really cut it (and I can't say it without laughing). Other suggestions I've had so far have been "DJ B" (my surname being Burr) or other variations along the same lines like "DJ Brr" which is pretty err odd (and a little cold).

Does anyone have any ideas (keep 'em clean please :D )?

As a side topic - if you were asked, what would you say your DJ name is?

Ive been asked the same question - i think DJ ***** is pretty old hat now and its hard to think of something that doesnt sound lame!

If i get asked i normally just use my nick name - Sparky or use my first name and surname letter (in my case Mark D). Does the job!!!

:agree: Having said that I still use the DJ Pridders moniker for the younger gigs with the mobile nightclub experience - and I was advertised as DJ Pridders (without my knowledge) as such for a gig I did last month. I do cringe when I see flyers with DJ ****** on it, some are pretty original and amusing but the majority are old hat.

I prefer (if a DJ name is required/needed) to just use Simon P.

This topic falls into one of my "most annoying" categories and seems to be constrained to this industry.

If the promoter is putting names on posters, it's pretty obvious the names featured will be bands/DJs/etc. as opposed to barmen & bouncers.

Bands don't do it... when do you see "Band Rolling Stones", "Band Beatles", etc?
Solo artists don't do it...
Plumbers don't do it... "Plumber Pete's a dab hand on the pipes of copper"
Bankers don't do it, Greengrocers don't do it... so why DJs?

The whole "DJ name" thing makes a joke of the industry and the individuals concerned, IMHO.

I'm surprised you don't already have some kind of stage name that you're happy with. Surely you need to be able to say who you are when you say good evening & announce yourself at the beginning of your gigs?

I've never been keen on the DJ Jules, DJ Shadow, DJ Casper type names. In how many other occupations are people known professionally by their first name or nickname & their job title? I haven't yet come across "Plasterer Tommy", "Actor John", "Builder Dave", "Undertaker Herbert", "Singer Jackie" or "Accountant Julian"

What about losing the DJ bit & going for Jules B or Jules Burr. Alternatively you could have Jules and then use your middle name as your surname if that works.

I can understand the people wanting a DJ name for this kind of event, as it's all about marketing. A friend of mine used to do these kinds of gigs which were heavily advertised on posters & flyers, but the marketing people went one better. Instead of just "DJ Dave St James" they would have something like "DJ Dave St James from Silhouettes" Most people would assume Silhouettes was some big company or nightclub, but in reality it didn't exist & was just a name added by the marketing people to make the DJ sound better!

It's all about Marketing I'm afraid. Though every time I drive by a poster for an event and see something like "DJ Crush" or whatever, I think it's a load of crap. At present I announce myself purely as "Jules" which is easy to say, and works with most age groups and audiences. But doesn't clearly identify me if anyone wanted to try and start following me.

Ironically the whole practice of prefixing your name with your industry seems to be very common in the West Country, you won't believe the number of businesses along the lines of "Pete the Plumber", "Paul the Plasterer", "Tom the Tree [Surgeon]" we have down here. I'm pretty sure there's a Show down here called "Dave the [Compact] Disc"

"Jules the [Disc] Jockey" (or "Jules the Jock") is a open to interpretation though (and sounds :Censored: :D). I did wonder about trying to use my middle name somewhere, but apparently my parents had a twisted sense of humor when they picked it. Vaughn doesn't quite go with anything. I did play with ideas around "DJ V", "Jules.V", "V.DJ", etc, but they're all a bit pants really.

...and what Tony / Rob say, really. 'DJ' as a prefix is old hat, but you've clearly argued a good case. A tedious exercise, but perhaps picking up a dictionary / thesaurus for inspiration, then maybe bring in some play on words, alternative spelling? It's something I used to do when I drew a blank trying to pull out names for my tracks, as a means to an end.

I'm sure something will jump out!

I started off as DJ Spex (with the gimmick that I always wore sunglasses - I had about 50 pairs to choose from at one point!) but then I became Dazzy 'D' and have been ever since. Now I know there's a young kid that goes by DJ Dazzy D but he's not me and I was first! ;)

I work for the council and it's written in my contract that I have to declare outside interests. No big problem though and everyone knows what I do so I have a rather large potential customer base just from my day job! :)

I don't see that there's anything wrong with using the DJ prefix.. rather than drawing a parallel with plasterers and plumbers, though, I'd rather draw a parallel with those who have OBE or BA Sc Dip Hons or similar after their names ;)
