I've decided on this years Rig investment, with a view to being able to cope with bigger corporate work where possible, so have decided to offer a Big and Small package, utilizing what we have at the mo and adding in a fair bit of new stuff. Have found that, though minor, the main issue this year has been about the size of the set up areas we get, in that, our TBars are too big for low ceiling'd pubs and clubs, meaning we are low on wash lighting. Conversely, we probably don't have enough dynamics to cope with Bigger functions.

At current we carry 8 Acme 56 Pars, 2 Imposs, a Projector and an Abstract XP3/Dynaroll type light. The Pars are on 2 TBars which flank Goalposts containing our Impossibleds and the XP3 as a centrepiece (sometimes)

For the New Small, Compact rig, I'm thinking Take the Pars off the TBars and use 2 on either side of the Goal post with a centrepiece light flanked by the Impossibleds in the middle.

For the Large set up, I'm thinking a Propper goalpost Stand, and cabling it so I can chop and change fairly easily. Lightswise I think I can go

Par -Imposs- Par - Centerpiece - Par - Imposs - Par
Leaving 4 pars for Up/Backlighting

The Centrepiece light I'd like to buy is a Starcluster, plus for the Large set up, I'll add in 2 Isolution IM5'S (HIDs)

So to summarise

Compact set up (For Pubs, Small Clubs)
2 Pars
2 Imposs
1 Centerpiece (either the Starcluster or XP3)
Projector and Pars for Back/Uplighting
(Optional) Moving Heads

Large Set up
4 Pars
2 Imposs
1 Centerpiece
2 Moving Heads
Projector and Pars for Back/Uplighting

So, after that rambling list (well done if you are still with me) I want to buy the following....your comments please...

2x Acme Isolutions IM5s HIDs
Kam Starcluster
Prolight Trilite Stand

and then maybe also
Behringer EP2500 Amp
Prolight Fogtec Hazer

To add to this, does anyone have any advice over what Passive speakers to add to our existing Ohms (2 Tops, 2 Subs)

I would go for the speaker wall system to this , 2 x 18inch subs, 2 x 15inch, 2 x 12inch , then to nice equal looking stacks either side of your rig, that will look the part.

OR

2 x 15inch subs with 2 x 12inch tops, (subs with poles in with tops ontop)
then fly some smaller 8inch or 10inch cabs from your lighting stand or trussing if you have that.

The request was for cabs to add. My suggestion would be anything full range with twin 15" drivers, since this would be a standalone rig if necessary, and reinforcement for the others, with minimal complexity in wiring it up.

All am saying is theirs more flexiablity in what i said, maybe he gets a small place with a room size of 5 meters x 5 meters, 15inch cabs would be a kill, so take the 12s, then maybe he could get a bigger place, but they just suitable for the 15s, then a bigger place could be suitable for the 12s and the subs, or then and even bigger place and use the whole lot as a stack, Lets behave and not argue over it :zip:

I'm not arguing with anybody. I'd point out that your suggestion doesn't use the cabs he already has, since you suggest 18" subs, he has 15".
You suggest 12" tops, he has 15". I'm simply trying to answer the question asked as helpfully as possible, without the OP buying more than one new pair of cabs.
This subject has been done to death before, and very recently as well.

My colleague Justin and I purchased a rig for him which apart from 15" subs is exactly what you suggest, and he loves it since it has tremendous flexibility, just as you say.

The question I would ask is what size of corporate work are you looking to do. To me it would be about how many bodies you need to cover with sound and the size of room you are looking to light.

Sorry to answer a question with a question.

am suggesting a set of 12inch tops and 15inch tops with 18inch subs to use as a stack or i suppose you could use 15inch subs but it might look abit odd, in this case i didnt know what the op had speaker wise, could just add another a set of 12inch or 15inch cabs and make it a stack.

something like this am on about.

using the 12s as the tops, 15s for the mid and subs for the of course BASS http://www.classd.ltd.uk/ultra-beast-1.4kw_pa-system.html
or maybe this as addtional back up :) http://www.classd.ltd.uk/4.2kw-15_pa-rig.html

Or use a 3way x-over. I'd prefer that. This one tends to run and run. You may not believe this, but I'm one of the guys on your side on this subject. My speaker stacks are second only to two of the Tonys on here. :D

And how is that stack going to sound, with the compression driver on the middle box beneath the LF driver on the top box?

I'm sure we had a thread on this very topic recently.

I am gonna put my hands up and say I have literally no idea what this means! I reckon a visit to my local bookshop for some revision is in order!!

Thanks to all, for your responses in this thread and the Main Forum thread.

To clarify, I'm now going to be hiring an additional 2 15" speakers to compliment my existing 15s and subs.

Which then naturally leads to the next question...Amps...we have a 1k and a 800...what's the most beneficial way of using these within this set up?

Right. What Tony is referring to is that with two tops stacked on each other, the tweeter/High Frequency driver of the lower cab is below the woofer/Low Frequency driver of the upper one, not an ideal solution.
Two suggestions.
1) This is a bit tricky, but if you're hiring 15" cabs, get a 3way crossover, an amp to suit them ( unless they're active ) and use them as mids. This should separate the frequencies satisfactorily, and sound good.
2) The easier way. If you're aiming on separating the cabs side to side, then I'd recommend some full range cabs with twin 15" drivers. These will give more bass, and are adequate on their own. I use these, anything like that should be fine.

Feed them with a suitable amp, from the booth output on your mixer, and away you go.

Care to share what ampilfiers you have their ?

here is a good ampilifer i know someone who runs one and hes had no problems.

http://www.whybuynew.co.uk/Dimension-4-Amp-By-Numark.html
theirs a built in crossover aswell with dip switches and the rest on the back a very good ampilifer for an all in one solution he says. ted

also i wouldnt run the risk of going down to 4ohms!

Thank you for helping a befuddled old man Tony. :approve: Now if you can explain to these two what rig to use, and how to set it up, you'll deserve at least a  , if not a :youdaman:
