Good quality speakers at a lowish price?

Hi people,
Don;t know if this should go in this area of Technical Help. I've been doing discos the odd few years with my own equipment but I've been borrowing speakers as I havent really been able to afford my own.

I was just wondering how much would it cost for some speakers that will last, wont cost me an arm and a leg and aren't stupidly heavy.

So what are good speakers to start with? I know you get what you pay for but I dpn't really earn enough for expensive stuff

Well I'm just looking how much I'll need to save. When I have a figure of round about how much Ill need to get my own speakers Ill find it easier to save.

My amp is a Waudio DA300 Series

Amp isn't big enough to run anything suitable for a mobile application in my opinion.

In terms of speakers I still use OHM's bomb proof RW3's. A good second hand set will cost you between £150 and £200 for the pair. You may get some cheaper as I have in the past, but ensure they are not abused.

They are 300watt cabs at 8ohm, so you will need a bigger amp of circa 600 a side at 4ohm.

Thats my opinion on cabs. I wouldn't buy budget, but buy second hand mid range cabs as they should last longer and sound better.

In my opinion, you should have invested the money you spent on your moving heads into your sound system - that should have taken top priority.

You have moving heads and no speakers and a 150 watt a side amp.

Good sound cheap lights - not cheap sound good lights should be everyones mantra. I have my sound fairly sorted so now working on the lighting. I have two NJD Chaos 2's and a monster moon that I want to replace with two Martin EFX600's, but thats a different story for a different time.

You are going to need a bigger amp and a good one. That's going to cost you circa £300 to £500 for starters and that's before you put a spare in the rack.

Agreed, if you dont have a lot to spend---secondhand Class D and Peavey cabs are very good value, noticed last night loads of real bargains on ebay at the moment ( subject to a sound test:eek: )

I have a pair of 15 inch Skytecs in the garage here which you can have for £50 with modified improved and decent sounding horns, one has an Eminence driver which isnt too bad. Ideal for lower sound power applications only--- which might suit your amp if your keeping it.

Solve your amp AND speaker problem.
A lot of people knock skytec. They are budget but I have a set (passive) which is used twice a week for the past 3 year without any problems. For the price it is a decent set of speakers.

Waits for the skytec knockers coming to join the peavey and class-d critics :D :D :D

Have a look at the JBL JRX series. Nice speakers, without a silly price tag. If you can afford to pair it up with an amp for the QSC RMX series, then all the better!

I'm sure there will be a suitable offering from Class D to fit your budget, they appear to offer the biggest bang for the buck and whilst I haven't heard them, I haven't herad a bad word spoken about them, which is no mean feat.

Don't buy Skytec, Soundlab, etc. - you'll be wasting your money and be back here in six months asking what speakers to buy. I've said it before - "buy once, cry once"

Over the years we've had various makes of speaker, at varying price ranges (none at high end though), and the Class D speakers have a beautiful quality of sound to them: they are warm and in no way harsh, but still with plenty of bass.

Detractors will point out the low SPL, but so long as they are loud enough, I personally think that the tone of the sound is more important.... which is something you cannot get over by statistics and figures.

If I had to criticise them in any way, I'd say that you will find more robust speakers out there with tougher carpet covering, but so long as you look after them, there's no problem.

As far as I am concerned, they compare favourably with speakers that cost 2x,3x or 4x the price.

(I think I may have been the first on the forum to get some Class D speakers. I certainly recall finding them whilst surfing around, thinking they looked nice and sounded interesting on paper, but being dubious about the price. I came on here and asked if anyone had heard of them before, and I recall Darren saying that he thought he remembered someone on another forum mentioning them and giving them a good review.... so I bought them off ebay that night, and we've been using them - and others - since)

But I do agree with the others... your sound should've been your priority - not your lights! :eek:

Ok well first Ill buy a new amp then. The moving heads that were bought was because I work at a youth centre and its the centre that bought them with funding we recieved but as they only have discos once every month or 2 and I'm the one who does it for them they said I can use them when they are not.

When we recieve funding the funders tell us what we have to spend the money on and we can't turn it down or buy something else. This time they said to buy some new lighting so we did. I would have loved to buy a new amp as the centres amp is actually older than me and is only mono.

Ill start taving for a new amp then

Good amp I switch between the 2450 and my Crown XLS 602. However, its not a cheap unit to purchase.

Well ill stick with what Ive got for now and after xmas I'll buy a new amp then speakers.

As I know I wouldn't get much for my amp when I've got a new one I would probably donate mine to the Youth Centre as it is perfect for the room we have discos in for the kids

Try to go for a cab that people on this forum use and can vouch for, Danny. In your particular case, I doubt you'll beat Class D at this level.

Alternatively, look for some branded cabs secondhand.

Whatever you do, steer clear of unheard of manufacturers/importers!

I got my for £250.00 ex display. Paul sold some on here for not much more.... so you could get these cheaply if your lucky or there about £500.00 new with covers. and no amp require...

I agree absolutely with all comments above, especially about the sound. I've run them against way more expensive kit, and Class D win every time on sound quality, with much more warmth and middle. They always lose on volume. Again, you pays your money............................................. ...............................

I can say the same thing when I had people saying that my Mackie and DB sub rig sounded better than a 6.5K + vat Void rig, and I'm not even joking. lol.

Nope. It was the Void Viper which is a full reflex system apart from the CD.

I people saying that the sound was dull. But looking at the responce chart on the Void website, the whole system which was 2 subs and 2 top ius flat from 40hz right up to 16.6k by the looks of things.

This was only at low volume. The Void rig has much more output that mine but didn't sound as nice as I expected it to be. All that faffing about its a Void rig and all that, bit of a shame really. Everything was flat I remember hearing also.

Actually, it was me who said Tom's rig sounded better at lower volumes.

I like Void gear, but did think that the Basys sounded better than the Viper.
