Here is one for you.

What makes us different from the general public? What makes us able to stand in front of a crowd and do what we do?

I am a naturally shy person when put in a social situation where I am faced with people I don't know. I feel akward and struggle to make conversation.

However, when given a microphone, pay cheque and a rig I am just fine and entertain people I have never met with ease.

Anyone else like that? - Why is that?

I'm pretty similar, until I get to know the people. Why is that? I have no idea. Give me a mic and I'm like 'Batfink'. "My mic is like a shield of steel"

Yep once I know people I can be the life and soul, but prior to that stuck behind this terrible shyness. I don't know what it is. Maybe because I am working I am forced to overcome it straight away.

He's Irish so it had better be a floating or flying bike :p In fact I am Irish by birth and Lancastrian by virtue of the fact it has kept my feet dry for many a year. :D

However, when I purchased my house one of the first refurbishment jobs was a new front door with a big stained glass red rose in the middle. Very proud, but a part of my heart will always belong to Sheffield.

I'm a naturally quiet & shy-ish person with new people too, but over the years I've come to the realisation that's mostly because I like to suss folks out before deciding whether or not to befriend.

I'm lucky not to be overly shy, I'm just not the life and soul of the group when I first meet new people. However, six pints and four hours later it may be a different story. :d

I know it's hard to believe, but back when I started, I was very shy...until I got behind the decks.

I've changed a lot since those days, though, and "shy" is one of the LAST words to describe me now...as those who've met me will confirm!

strange but true , I`me much the same , for me I dont like crowds , but given the disco in front of me , or a bar ( used to be a barman) , it seems to be a barrier between my world and the great masses.

this is a good point, Im just the same! I hate small social situations and feel very uncomfortable and shy.

But then on the other hand i can really get crowds going, present things, host kids parties.

I think people are surprised when they meet me afterward, a lot of people think Djs are arrogant and out going, but most iv met are just like me!!

I think its the same for a lot of performers, especially solo singers.

It is pretty strange though. I imagine it is linked to the attitude people adopt when on holiday "I'm on holiday, no - one knows me so who cares"

I suppose at a personal level, in a normal social environment we are wary of others and perhaps scared of appearing stupid / ugly / horrible to other people.

When in front of a crowd we take on a persona. Its like we are acting when we are the DJ. Any flaws in our personality or likeability can be dismissed as part of the routine.

I suppose deep down we all want to be liked so avoid being outspoken or loud in turn developing a shyness.

Also some people are just naturally loud and boisterous. To the observer I often come across as shy but more often than not I just can't get a word in edge - ways with my mates!

Anyways shyness never did me any harm with the fairer sex neither it did ;)

UTTERLY the case with me. I always think Wurzel Gummage and put my "performance head" on ! LOL
(To the entent i feel LESS nervious standing up to sing than I do going just to DJ...wierd.)

I've done gigs where people from (day job) work were there and they said afterwards they didn't believe it was me at first.
