Not sure if this is the right place.

Many of you may no "CJ entertainments" is my business, My dad works with me. (60 - 40 to me). its a long story. but i own all the equipment (paid for it my self etc)and he owns the music. to cut it short my dad packed DJing years ago because of his ex wife and i started him back up.

Anyways my Dads being made redundant (signed for and that). with a good pay out. and he's been offered apart time driving job.

so we have some money to add to the disco. I'm 90% happy with my rig so the only part of equipment I'm getting is a new deckstand and maybe a booth???.

right i am getting between £2000 - £3000 to spend on the business.

this is basically to the full time DJs. we want to know how you would invest in your show. i need to get more work.

I definitely need professional Advertising like a website and stuff.

what would you do and what sort of cost.

this may sound brief but I'm struggling here lol.

And there is your contradiction. Do you need to invest in your show 9which im assuming you mean the actual equipment)...and will that get you mkore work?

First thing would be gto get the website sorted, look at whats working for you with advertising and try and expand on that too.

If your not getting complaints about the state of the disco, youve nothing to worry about. A djs biggest critic with equipment is themselves ;)

Dont rush and watse it! Take your time and think things throw to get the most out of your spendings. Look into different paths for different options. All the best with whatever you spend it on :)

Signing up the van may be an option IF your tarde area is where you live...sounds daft i know, but in my case a signed up van would be a waste of time because im too expensive for my living locality ;)

Wedding fayres...dont pee money down the drain with them. Ask other businesses who attaend them which are the most popular/best attended. Some of my best ones are provided free.

You need to work out exactly what your market is if you havent already :)

Google adword is not a cheap hobby and would require monthly on costs.

For top google results its down to your page content, and META info.

www.one.com (http://www.one.com) £11 a year, more then enough space, tranfers etc for a disco site.

Web design and SEO are two different things and you can end up wasting lost of money keeping a top position with a dedicated SEO company.

Ive said this a few times, but contact Marc J :D and get yourself up there on Google Maps business listings. that works wonders for me.

Flyer the old folks home :D :D

Seriously then, wedding fayres work wonders. Older folk are word of mouth like you say.

Im in the process of getting an advert for a 2 year period in a venues wedding brochure. This brochure goes out to all brides/grooms who enquire about that venue so its getting my name out there with them...even if they dont book that particular venue.

Talk to Danno for websites (if he has enough time I'm sure he will make you one) he is a legend when it comes to them!!!!

As for sign writing a van id be very wary of doing it, there is no better advert for a thief to see!!!

CJ, personally I would spend the money on the following:

Website - a first point of call and something you will not regret and also gain a lot more work from.

An extra service such as room uplighting or a black & white dancefloor if you feel there is the work out there.

If you can offer something extra the client has one more reason to book you if it is something they are after. It is also an upsell option and will hopefully generate you more money.

Leicester Ben

Extra services are certainly the way forward, you can make way more money by simply hiring in equipment as opposed to doing a disco (even if you are charging good money for a disco).

Its certainly easier to install a starcloth for example as opposed to do a 5 hour disco.

This is where I am trying to steer my business more towards next year.

I want to spend more time with the family and fiancee and therefore an extra service hire instead of a 5 hour disco would be better for myself.

I am in the process of working on just an equipment hire website, so Ben hopefully will be some work coming your way and some more Dan's way next year. :)

As far as I know, no search engines like Google, Yahoo etc use meta tags no more. You need good content on the website these days.

Just basically spam the internet with your website but in a good way like advertising on different DJ website like this one for example. The more you can get your name out there, the better. :)

Mixture of everything to be fair.

However I know there was something about google not using metatags as there main source of ranking sites.

I am sure someone with more knowledge on this could help here.

Well i had a phone call off a guy from google and BT trying to get me to sign up to be gurenteed first page etc and both of them said meta tags dont do anything now they go on ( and this is what they said not me )

1.Content of site ( no porn etc )
2.How many hits sites having already
3.Spellings
4.How long site has been active on the net
5.Pages ( how many etc ) so i asked why and there responce was they will put some one with a few pages before someone who has loads as there customers have said the hate trawling threw loads of pages but again dont like the one page wonders.

Again this is what i was told when they were trying to sell me the package so please dont slate me or pull me up on these issues

Cheers Dave :)

You have almost certainly been contacted by scammers, google don't do SEO, neither do BT, get their company name, and type it into Google, you will find a lot of unhappy customers, it's a common scam. Read the following, (from the web)

SEO scammers often contact companies out the blue via phone or email. Their claims tend to be sensational and can provide figures and demonstrations that make their services appear highly valuable, it’s very easy for people to get caught out by these Internet age snake oil salesmen.

The biggest give away you’ve been contacted by an SEO scammer is when they guarantee success; this is simply not possible and should be treated with extreme caution. Some back this up with claims they have an exclusive relationship with Google but this will not be the case.

Be wary of SEO companies offering packages with varying subscription rates. SEO requirements are unique to each company and any solution should be bespoke.

Check for contractual clauses in their small print, there are often entries which clear the SEO company of any responsibility if they do not generate successful results.

Some SEO companies will only concentrate efforts to improve your ranking for searches on your company name. As it’s likely your company name is unique this is often an easy task to achieve.

SEO salesmen may demonstrate how a search for certain terms shows one of their clients ranking highly. This may have been achieved by unscrupulous tactics such as link farming or using a fake search engine client.

Yep - just to echo that - NEVER pay an SEO company to do it for you, they are all scammers in my opinion (well the ones that ring you oit of the blue).

I got stung years ago - never again!

As one of my service offerings is (successfully) providing SEO services for my clients, I object to this statement.

As with any other business, there are scammers and cowboys out there as well as there are reputable services. Go in with a bit of common sense and clear objectives and there's no reason to be 'stung'.

If it sounds too good to be true, it usually is :o

I dont know why I bother! :Censored:

Let me explain what I meant properly.

I would certainly NEVER give any company that phoned me out of the blue claiming that they can get me to the top of google any of my money.

I was stung about 5 years ago and lost about £200 (which was a lot of money when I was just starting out).

I get about 3-6 calls a day from people offering to get me to the top of google - i tell every songle one in no uncertain terms to swivel!

You dont need to pay anybody to get to the top of google, you can do it yourself for free, im really pants at website stuff and I managed it!

Of course you can. In the same way that you can re-roof your own house, or service your own car. Or, you can focus on running your business and leave it to a professional. Your choice.

Getting back to the OP, for me it's starcloths, so simple and a good generator of funds ;)

yep I completely agree.

Even if you dont own any you can still make money with them:

Just to give you an example on the 5th Dec I have a booking for amongst other things 60 meters of black starcloth at a venue in York.

I dont even own any black starcloth, there is nothing to stop me quoting the client x price, hiring in the cloth at y price, paying staff to set it up at z price and still make a nice tidy profit on it.

Simples :)

That's the ones but like Ben says you don't actually have to own them just know a man that does ;)

Once I get an ongoing paypal dispute sorted, I'll be looking into starcloths as an investment.

booths are good but you won't actually make any money out of one of them , where as starcloth hires you will

I dont really get the booths, yeah they look great but I think you would find it harder to sell that as an add on compared to a good quality wool surge backdrop (im not talking about the shiny cheap tacky looking cloths on ebay).

I would imagine that if you invested in a booth you would use it every week and get no extra money.

If you had a backdrop you could sell it as an extra service at say £175 a pop as an add on to a disco.

Cj if that's the case then I would use some of the money for advertising and Wedding fayres.

Now is the time to start planning next springs wedding fayres, getting new flyers , pop up banners etc.

As a pointer I've already booked for 4 Wedding fayres next spring. 1 in Jan, 2 in Feb and 1 in March.

These wedding fayres are primarily looking at business for 2011/12 so don't expect instant results ;)
