How many times I had this last night was unreal.

I don't think guests understand that we cannot chop and change the music genre just for their requests or the fact that we have other requests to fit in.

I was working in a up market bar last night and the problem I faced was people was asking for tracks that I had already played 10 minutes before they arrived!

I had a girl come up to me last week during the buffet when I had some background music on and she asked me to play some up to date stuff, I explained that the evening will be livening up soon after people have finished their food but she was having none of it.

Anyway I put some Black and Gold on and a few others like it when all of a sudden she comes up again and asks for Grease, I was flabbergasted so I told her that one minute she's asking for up to date stuff and the next we are going back to the 70's, she just smiled and walked off.

All some people want to hear is their favourite music and they don't care what others may want, I didn't bow down to her requests straight away and made her wait for a few of them.

I recently had a guy come up to me asking for Mr Brightside for his girlfriend who'd promised him something beginning with 'B' and 'J' if he got me to play it :eek:

I strung him along for a while ... made him come up and ask 3 times ... and then I put him out of his misery :)

Not sure if he got "paid" or not :p

Nor has it happened to me but i can imagine and it doesnt surprise me. Think its happened to most djs i know and i have heard of most accepting the offers....seems to be the way the world is at the moment....

I have had the usual comments like can you play up to date stuff/modern stuff....i ask them to specify what they want as there is loads of modern stuff and they just say anything.

I must admit that one of my pet hates is being asked what I'm playing next.

If you tell them, more often than not they'll say something negative, so my stock answer is "I haven't decided yet"

It was near the end of the night and i knew what two songs i wanted to end the night with, when a young woman came up and asked for a request.
I told her that i could not play her request because there was not enough time left, her reply was " well i know the club owners you know".:confused:

A month ago I did a 30th for a teaching assistant, and had a full floor (playing cheese as she'd asked), untill her headmaster said play "Too Much Too Young...Everybody will dance to it..."

Result :eek: , cut it short, got on the mic & said "Thank you, headmaster";)

Since I'm still cuting my teeth at this game it happens at every party I do I get so many requests for different styles and tracks there is always someone who doesn't like the track I'm playing and sometimes in order to accomodate them all sometimes you can end up killing the dancefloor. Especially if the people who requested the track don't even get up and dance to it:bang:

If someone is really insistent then what I do is line up the request and the track that I was going to play then bring in snippets of the request then bang either that song or the alternative in.

Obviously this is dependent entirely on the style of music and works best with a flat 4/4 beat but its a good way to gauge the reaction from the dancefloor. It also softens the blow plus, depending on the circumstances, you can tease the person making the request for ages - just for fun :D

In answer to the OP - Like the one Bellshill outlined i've had a few sob stories and once whilst doing an engagement party I had a psycho barmaid who resembled a terrahawk, threatening to have me done in if I didn't play play "Face down a*s up" all night.

Thankfully those attending the party (all 7 of them :eek:) thought this was hilarious.

Also, thankfully I had the track on some Clubland compilation that was popular at the time. Heaven knows what sort of hassle i'd have found myself in otherwise.

Im a bridesmaid thats a the one I seem to get a lot. My reply is normally along the lines of... So your one from the bigtime come back when your the bride.
Or can you change this song the bride doesn't like it. When its from the brides request list right next to you. You show the list and watch them go off in a huff.

You get every excuse under the sun to play something next. I think people assume that because we DJ we are idiots.

Did a 21st the other day. Spoilt Brat. Everyu song she asked for was to play ' next' . why? cos it was her party and she was having what she wanted and when. When Dad rudely came up and gave me a bollocking for playing ' s **** T' as he so eloquently put it. I gave him what for ande told him they were all his daughters & Friends requests. He did apologise later tho. Stroppy lot... :-)

On Saturday night I did a 40th and got everyone to sing Happy Birthday. 10 minutes later, this woman came up to me (out of her face) and says "Stop the music and Let me sing happy birthday now", I said "Sorry no, everybody sung it 10 minutes ago!"

She then said "I haven't seen her for 10 years and I probably won't see her for another 10, so you are your going to let me sing it or not?"

I replied "OK then, Feel free to sing it, but I'm not stopping the music" (and she didn't want to use the mic to sing by herself)

I think if I requested a song, I would like it played next, otherwise you don't know when it is going to be played, and whether you'll be in the pub at that particular time still, and it turns into a waiting game.

I can't see a problem with a song being played next, as long as it fits in.

Are you blaming the venue for the behaviour of 2 guests?

Did they not deal with the situation and remove them, as mentioned?
