Decorating the Rig for Christmas

Just wondered what you lot thought about adding a little Christmas spirit to the rig for the Christmas Period. Obviously there isn't a definitive argument either way, so basically a case of what do you do?:)

I run Phil Bearman's Christmas visuals on display screens or projection screens all the time that I'm not displaying other stuff, ie during background/buffet etc.

I was considering this too on saturday, I was thinking maybe some fairy light style white led's twisted around speaker poles / light stand. They are cheap as chips just now and I think the white led's look classy.

I use my gobo projector and the Christmas Gobo, but thats about it for adding Christmas stuff to the rig.

Noted, I'll put the cash to better use then. I thought it could look smart in the right environment e.g in venues that hang the net style led's from the roof and around their plants and stuff.

I think they look tacky too!

The picture I had in my head was of a really minimal set up in a nice venue, the sort that uses candle light and is generally more 'up - market'.

In that context I thought it might look good but as your comparison suggests, maybe not that good an idea at all.

I should add, I have no - idea what the alternative is to the starcloth style frontage. To me, light screens are horrendous and I'm leaning toward building a custom booth.

I don't think it's a good idea to Christmasify the rig for my wedding in a couple of weeks or for the pub on New Year's eve, and they're my only December discos...so I'll be giving it a miss.

The hotel have a massive Xmas tree nextto where I set up the disco and decorations all round the room. I wear a Christmas tie! Thats it!

I did think about this for a shrt time. Had thought about tinsel around my lightstand poles but think I'll just stick to Christmas visuals running on my 2 monitors either side of me.

I'm not having a poor Christmas at all. :confused:

Last year I decided to to stop doing cheap discos for other people each December. This resulted in two full price bookings last year & the same this year. It's through choice, and is the first stage of the gradual winding down of my business as I head towards my retirement.

Assuming I get no cancellations, 2009 will be my best ever year (although only by about £150), but that's not bad for the year of the worst recession in my lifetime...so there's no need to be sorry at all!

For the record, next year is also looking very good, thanks.

Well, as I'm doing more Christmas parties than ever before I will be adding some tinsel to my rig (even if it's to hide the wires lol). I don't care if it looks a little tacky, surely Christmas & tacky go hand in hand :D :p ;)

I usually use tinsel. I know this does sound very tacky but, If you get some elegant looking tinsel and wrap around speaker stands and light stands evenly spaced out it looks pretty decent. sometimes my client request certain types of decor but i think most djs can work out what decor would look right on the setup :)

I bought a few bits and pieces for Halloween this year, and I wish I hadn't. It made the rig look a bit more "in season", but cost me a package (in percentage terms, about 5% of the takings over the Halloween week).

I won't be doing the same for Xmas, despite having quite a few company Xmas parties (along with the Bristol Uni Phsyics dept Xmas party last night).

Well, maybe a little bit of Mistletoe on the Lighting bar :D
