Romany Weddings...

Hope the mods don't see this as prejudice....it is not intended as that.My Idol is Joe Longthorne who comes from a family of travellers so I really don't mean them any harm...

However ....four or five years ago I was offered double my normal rate to cover a "special wedding" ....the venue were not specific apart from saying the fee would be upfront and cash.


To be honest it was obvious pretty early on that this was to be a romany wedding.Things were going fine till about half an hour from the end.Then it seemed to turn into a scene from the old wild west movies with people breaking chairs over each other and it ending in a general brawl.I had noticed a lot more police presence in the village beforehand but still being a bit naive hadn't considered that it may be because of the wedding.Anyway pretty soon the venue was awash with police cars and Bobbies....One Policewoman got isolated and ended up being Hospitalised.


Why am I mentioning this now??


Because last night I had another funny incident.At the end of last nights quiz-night a member of the audience and friend had ordered myself and others an Indian...this was a ritual that has been going on for a few months now.

We had had the pleasure of about a dozen of the romanies and their children during the course of the evening.At ten past twelve we were wondering where our order was.We checked an adjoining room in the venue and there they all were tucking into the meals that we ordered!!:eek: :bang: (They must have paid for them).

They do seem to have a totally different set of rules??

I was asked to do a Wedding for some travelers last year.
They had no landline contact number and no cheque book, they would not give an address and just wanted to meet at the venue with cash.
As i was on the phone to them i just kept thinking of the film - Snatch-.
In the end i said " ooh sorry i have just realised that i am allready booked on that day".

To be fair I didn't know they were like that....so would probably have had a shot at it anyway....

In the end I had to threaten to turn the music off in the buffet break to get my fee anyway.

Yes and I got robbed by one of the sods in Palma last year.

Persecution - reap what you sow sunshine - no sympathy what so ever for any of them.

As for the Irish version. Work for them - no chance. I have spent thousands of my various employers money cleaning up after them sods and moving them. Although did manage to shift one lot rather quickly with a site manager and a Manitou. Off now or that ones on its roof kids and all mate. Worked a treat.

I always believed that gypises originated in Egypt and not India, hence where the word gypsy originally came from.

We have Travellers use our place where I play from time to time - and some of them have been intimidating (especially when they turn up en masse) - I'm afraid their reputation often goes before them - I'm sure there are some with hearts of gold - but in general their morals are questionable and have their own standards to live by, the last two fights there involved them or their friends.

They are indeed a law unto themselves, and I feel the true ones have a strict code of honour. As in many cases, it's the less genuine ones who seem to cause the trouble.

BTW, if you see two fighting between themselves, don't intervene. You'll suddenly be fighting both yourself. That's how it goes. ;)
